Customer Reviews:
Frustrated owner needing service.......2007-02-16
I love my Nikon Coolpix 5900 however, the lens failed in less than one year. Service took 6 weeks to repair. The lens failed again after less than 10 days after repair. Why is the lens failing to open again? I absolutely hate the inconvenience of returning this item again for service although I do have a paid plan for it. Why can't warranty be fast, local and competent?
Mixed feeling.......2006-12-13
Takes great pics ...BUT with a tripod and BRIGHT light...not too handy really....
Great images.....poor warranty.......2006-08-11
I bought this camera just under 12 months ago and recently the battery cover door would not stay closed. I sent it into Nikon along with my proof of purchase and about a week later got a letter saying it would not be covered under warranty. The repair charge with shipping and tax would be $115.22.
I am the only person that uses this camera and it was never dropped or abused. Battery was only taken in and out maybe 4 or 6 times over the time I had it.
For this reason I would never buy another Nikon product again. Next digital camera will charge without removing battery.
Camera takes GREAT pictures, but can't do business with a firm that is very difficult to get ahold of and does not honor their warranty.
Bye Bye Nikon.
One Powerful Mini.......2006-03-10
This review is for the Coolpix 5900 with 5MP.
You will not be displeased with this camera if you are in the
market for a compact digital camera. This little baby lies
comfortably in your pocket until you want it and rarely fails
to deliver, no matter what lighting obstacles you throw in it's
path. The footprint is amazingly small for a 5MP and you'll be
amazed at the functionality. I found the video/movie feature to
be a real useful tool that surprises most people with the great
clarity and utterly blown-away at night shots in poor light.
Think of Las Vegas lights on the strip, or a crowd of people
in thin night light. This camera handled it all. The SD card
is easy to access, and I recommend a 1GB size so you can take
your time with movies. Otherwise a 512MB card will give you
about 300 photos. But I warn you, you will be bitten by the
movie bug and want to use this more and more (provided you have
disk space or burn the excess to DVDs). I also recommend the
San Disk Ultra II SD cards for fast recovery speeds, so you
don't have to wait for each shot to record before going to the
next shot (this is 5 MP and that's a lot of pixals to store).
The roll on the side of the body enables you to keep a tight
grip on it with one hand shots- a feature many small cameras
lacked. The battery life is exceptional, but as always, buy a
backup for travel. The hit of one star was for the frustratingly small on/off button. I know they designed it so that it won't accidentally turn on in your pocket, but my fat finger is not the best tool.... The 2 inch LCD is not protected like others too, but so far seems pretty tough, rolling around in my pocket with sunglasses and other things that so far have not scratched it.
If it breaks, it's your fault!.......2006-03-08
I was very disappointed in Nikon's service. This camera has a 2in LCD display that apparently is very fragile. When I returned for service, Nikon claimed I dropped it... which I didn't! I was very careful in handling this camera, but the fragile LCD still broke. To be blamed by the manufacturer was really disappointing. They offered to repair it for $210, nearly the price of a new camera.
I will NEVER by a Nikon product again. If they are going to sell such a fragile product, they should at least include a hard case for it.

This is an awesome camera. If you want a good digital camera for an even better price, this is the camera for you. It takes great pictures. It hardly ever needs to be charged thanks to the lithium battery and it is really easy to use. Nikon is a great brand for cameras and you cannot beat the price for this camera!

Customer Reviews:
Hmmm...Humvee or Vivitar?.......2007-11-22
These are not great binoculars. Alignment is so-so, focusing is mushy, resolution at more than about 50 yards is surprisingly bad (what, did the makers think you'd spend all your time looking at stuff on the other side of the yard?). Twenty power is more than you typically find on a binoculars of less than 80mm objective diameter, and there's a reason--the field of view is claustrophobic. It feels like looking down a long narrow tube instead of the usual "you are there" feeling you get with binoculars. Finally, they're heavy as heck. I have owned other 50mm binoculars, and these are beasts. I suppose that represents the Hummer ethos. There's a comparison to be made here to those lots full of Hummer SUVs that are not being sold while Japanese hybrids sell like hotcakes, but I'll let you figure it out.
For some reason, the neck strap that came with these binoculars is really short. When I let it out as far as it will go, I still have to take my glasses off to the strap over my head.
Oddly enough, I bought some radically cheap Vivitar 50mm binoculars recently just to noodle around with. They were so atrociously bad I ended up disassembling them and using some of the optical components in other projects. I couldn't help but notice that these "Humvee" binoculars came in identical packaging to the Vivitars, right down to the little resealable bag with the lens cleaning cloth and neck strap inside, and the material and plastic parts of the neck strap itself. The only difference in the whole package is the stuff printed on the box. The Humvees are more solidly built, in that some parts that were plastic on the Vivitars are metal on the Humvees, and they work better, but it still makes me wonder if these are just high-end Vivitars (i.e., barely functional trash, as opposed to regular Vivitars, which are non-functional trash) with a different name slapped on.
These are not all bad--50mm is a lot of aperture and 20x is a lot of magnification. They do gather a lot of light, and the magnification is nice for some things. Star clusters look like clusters of stars instead of bits of fuzz. And these include a threaded well for attaching a tripod adapter, which was absent on the Vivitars. That's a nice feature that I will take advantage of, because holding these up gets tiring pretty quickly. So these aren't worthless...they just aren't very good.
