It does its job........2007-11-27
A great product, especially with the USB flash drive input. However, there are a couple complaints I have...
No fast way to jump across a whole bunch of tracks (with a 4 GB USB flash drive, this is a big problem if you want to skip ahead), no time position indicator in the file, and no way to seek into the middle of a file.
As I use it for audio books, this is a major problem, as a single file can be 15-30 minutes long or longer, and if I'm just a couple minutes from the end, and need to get out to get fuel or restart the vehicle, it will only save the file, and start from the beginning. I either have to listen to nearly the whole thing all over again, or skip to the next track and miss the last couple minutes of the previous track.
I have no problems with the power output, and the fact that it runs off the cigarette lighter means I never have to worry about batteries. One solution to the problem of not seeking in a file, though (other than adding a button to do so) would be to build it with a rechargeable battery internally, so if the power is cut to the cigarette lighter plug, the transmitter will still have power from the internal battery, preventing the loss of place with a file.
I live in a rural area, and there's not much risk of interference from other stations. This could be a problem in a more urban area, but it seems to work for me when I have to go to Salt Lake City (though I do have to change to a different frequency when I get there).
I would NOT recommend this product for listening to music, however. The sound quality is too poor, and the bass and treble seem to be cut off. I think this may be due to FCC regulations (as is the limit on the power output), but I'm not sure. This is FAR better than that Belkin transmitter I've got which runs on 2 AA batteries (that only last about two hours), cost more, and has a far weaker output.
So, in short, if you drive for long periods of time, this guy works great. You can find free public domain audiobooks on the Internet.
Waste of Money!.......2007-11-24
The VRFM8. I know that technology usually outruns itself, and let's hope that is the case with this. VERY POOR sound quality and difficult to operate with an iPod.
The VRFM8 would be a good buy for someone who...
1). Has absolutely no other means of playing music in their car.
2). Doesn't know that there are other forms a media, like cassettes and eight-tracks that sound much better.
3). Has been teleported from a point in the distant past, and thinks that this is a high-tech marvel of the future.
4). Doesn't care at all, and I mean AT ALL, about how their music sounds.
Other than being a total waste of money and piece of junk, it's fine. Let us hope that something much better comes along soon.
Works with the right car.......2007-08-09
VR3 works well with certain cars and their radio/antenna system and works horrible on others. My friend's 2003 Honda Accord Coupe worked well for him. I had it in a Honda 2001 4DR Sedan and the sound quality was average. If you're using it for audio books, they are fine, but not for high quality music. It'll sound like semi-radio station quality. Test it out. It's a good and cheap solution for playing mp3s on some cars if it works!
VR3 VRFM8: Serviceable solution.......2007-08-07
This review applies to VR3's VRFM8 only. This is the FM transmitter with the tilt head, shuffle play, station memory, and song memory.
I like the way the flash drive (Memorex TravelDrive 2Gig -- cannot handle 4Gig) plugs in for a solid-state player with a simple front end. It's easy for me to put in several hundred MP3s and WMAs (copy them over file folders and all) for a decent playlist, and the shuffle feature means it stays fresh for days (I spend three hours in the car every day). I like that it remembers the station and song. I keep it tuned to the bottom of the dial and have had no significant static problems with the flash drive. The sound is acceptable for acoustic and lightly arranged music. I have not had the bad distortion problems some users have had -- I have read elsewhere that sometimes the volume on the unit needs to be turned down a bit (hold down the "back" button).
Caveats: I used to use this with my Dell MP3 player and it had more interference issues, possibly because of the stereo mini-plug cord. The cord itself is a weak link -- not only was it in the way and (apparently) susceptible to signal problems, it also began to break down within a half-year. I kept losing the left channel, and realized the cord was fraying internally -- I'd have to keep wiggling it. Because of that, I can only recommend this as a flash player front end. Also, the sound quality is nowhere near what the CD player or even the tape deck can do. The midrange is muddy and the highs roll off real fast -- I keep my treble full up, my mid almost full down, and the bass neutral to get any decent sound out of it, and even then, anything with a dense arrangement is boomy and muddy, so I end up turning it down a little. The 1/2-second "ramp-up" volume for each track is only occasionally bothersome.
So, not brilliant but definately serviceable. It does what it does pretty well for $30, and as long as I'm not trying to blast goth music or symphonies out of it, it's fairly listenable. It's worth it to have the mix in the car, esp. since my CD player and tape deck both have some issues right now. And until you get a car stereo with an aux jack onboard, it's a good stopgap. I'd spend a lot more for better sound quality, but I have yet to find such a thing.
P.S. Don't buy anything at Walmart, they are the devil and will own your soul one day. ;-)
mine works well, a few tips.......2007-06-28
First off, if your flash drive won't play, try formatting it to FAT32. Both a friend and myself found that this needed to be done, and it worked for both of us.
I get great sound quality on mine, both in my car and in a recent rental.
On mine, when I unplug and then plug back in, it doesn't resume right where it left off it just goes back to the beginning of the last track it played.
Other than the so-so shuffle, and also that it seems to freeze up occasionally, I am very happy with it. I am using a SanDisc Cruzer micro that came with this weird "U3" and other nonsense software pre-loaded, and the Vr-3 played it fine. However, my USB mp3 Centon player would not work in it, but of course will work with the included male/male cable.
And also, it essentially becomes another FM channel so it will have problems with other close FM stations, lightning, etc...

I have only used the lense for a couple of days but so far it is great. Pics are very sharp with a very shallow depth of field. The auto focus is a little louder than I expected but it's ok.
The Lens I Can't Live Without.......2007-12-12
I've used this lens countless times and almost always have it on my camera. It's my favorite as it allows me to get close up to something I want or far back without having to deal with a zoom. The picture is always clear, the f/1.4 is great for indoors.

Yes, this is a fast lens, and that's terrific. But it's clunky feeling, which may seem silly but has something to do with it's awkward size and shape when shooting. It also didn't come across as very sharp. I'm sure it passes some kind of resolution test for competence, but the pictures lacked "snap" and that's a subjective response only. I like a lot of Sigma lenses but often discover that snappy look more in Nikon lenses--it might be sharpness, or it might be contrast (the MTF charts are still a mystery to me). But call this is heads-up warning to people thinking about the lens in any kind of professional or demanding hands. Sadly, there isn't an affordable option. (This lens is optically the same for Nikon, Canon, and 4/3 mounts.)
