Griffin iMic / USB Audio Interface

    Product Description

The iMic universal audio adapter is a USB device that adds stereo input and output to any Macintosh or PC. Connect virtually any microphone or sound input device to any iBook, PowerBook, PowerMac or other Mac or PC with a USB port. iMic supports both Mic level and line level input. It also supports line level output for connecting speakers or an external recording device. iMic's audio is superior to built-in soundcard because it uses USB for the audio signal. USB isolates the audio signal from the noisy electronics resulting in higher-quality sound when recording and higher-quality sound for external speakers. The iMic is a must-have device for people who are serious about high quality audio in their computer.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Griffin Technology 9066-IMIC2 iMic/USB Audio Interface, the original USB audio adapter, lets you connect virtually any microphone or sound input device to any Mac or PC system with a USB port. iMic supports both mic and line level inputs via a selectable switch, and has a variable level output for connecting speakers or headphones.

The iMic really shines as the essential tool for converting your old LPs and tapes into MP3s and CDs. Griffin's audio recording software, Final Vinyl for Mac OS X (provided for free exclusively to iMic owners), makes recording old records and tapes very easy with its advanced features, including waveform-based cue editing and built-in 10-band EQ. You can use Final Vinyl to equalize LPs without having to connect a turntable to a pre-amp. iMic is also an ideal solution for your podcasting needs and for use with GarageBand, iMovie, and Final Cut Pro.

5 out of 5 stars iMac and LP's.......2007-12-24

Great job converting LP's to CD's. Took a while to get the hang of it but it works well. Found that leaving the default settings was best. Later, the music could be tweaked for specific sound requirements.

1 out of 5 stars Griffin iMic review.......2007-12-21

This thing is pretty much a piece of junk. The cost of making this item has got to be less than $5 and it looks it. What's worse is that it doesn't really serve any useful purpose as there is significant noise on the microphone input. As best as I can tell the quality of the line input is no better (or worse) than what one could get by going directly to the line input on the computer, but with the noise on the mic input this thing really isn't a good substitute for a powered mic. All in all, not worth having.

4 out of 5 stars the easiest way to go.......2007-12-18

I've been waiting for some time to find a device to convert lps, tapes, etc. to digital files. I didn't need a turntable, just a simple connection from rca jacks to usb input with the software to control the process.
The imic fills the bill here at a very affordable price. Once you understand the software and its options, everything is easy. I recommend that rather than plugging your turntable directly into the imic, that you simply connect the device to the record out function of your receiver. That way you will get a stronger signal and be able to choose between any of the audio signals that you have connected to your stereo system and convert all of them to digital files. That includes your television, radio, cassette tapes, dvd, whatever.
The only real drawback to any analog to digital system is the hands-on time required to start and stop, label the files, and enter all the information that you might want for each track. The imic has some controls to help with these issues, but don't expect to just sit down and transcribe your entire album collection in an afternoon.
I'm sure I am infringing on a variety of copyright laws when I do this, but, hey, if its for my use only, who gets hurt?
So, get yourself an imic and for less than $40 you can digitize any sound source that you want.

4 out of 5 stars Success at Last - PC users don't give up!.......2007-12-16

After spending two frustrating days trying to make digital copies of some vinyl lp's, I was ready to return the Griffin iMic. Luckily for me, I finally figured out the problem. Make sure your recording software is writing the converted audio files to a disk with lots of free space.

My turntable is connected to an old Kenwood receiver/amp, and the imic is connected to the tape output jacks. No matter what I did, and I tried changing everything: I/O settings, audio input levels, different audio capture products - I kept getting wav files that had frequent skipped or missing beats. Otherwise, the sound quality was excellent. Since I was monitoring the music while recording, I knew that the records were playing fine.

In a last ditch attempt, I connected an Iomega USB hard drive to the one remaining USB port on my IBM laptop... Voila! That did the trick. Evidently my local disk doesn't have enough free space to handle the incoming audio data without having those annoying blips show up every few seconds.

I don't normally post reviews on Amazon, but I wanted to put this info out there in case anyone else is having the same difficulties using this product on a laptop running XP. There's not a whole lot of support or documentation available on the web. I would have given it 5 stars if it had come with a trouble shooting guide of some sort.

5 out of 5 stars Griffin iMic works as advertised.......2007-12-13

I purchased the Griffin iMic, I downloaded the Mac software (FinalVinyl v. 2.1.1 sys10.4.9) and it works fine on my 24 inch 2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo iMAc, using Sys 10.4.10. I have not upgraded to Sys 10.5, so I do not know if it works there. I use TOAST titanium to burn CD's. It takes quite a bit of time to play my old 45 rpm records into the iMic, and then process them. I am taking the audio output from a stero earphone output jack (3.5 mm) and using ordinary RCA audio cables (audio tape deck cables) to connect to the iMic. A 3.5 mm stero male jack to dual RCA female output jack adapter is needed. I bought this from MCM electronics for a couple of bucks, the 10 foot dual cable was about 10 bucks. The real problem is you have to play the records in real time into the iMic. So I doubt I will ever convert my hundreds of 45's to digital. Just maybe a dozen or so. If that.

5 out of 5 stars small and simple and does the job well.......2007-10-02

I bought this to improve the sound output from my Macbook Pro. It is small and simple and does the job well. I highly recommend it for this purpose. If you are an audiophile you might want something fancier, but I think it should be fine for most users. If you want a laugh, check out the official tech specs on the Griffin website.

4 out of 5 stars Works Great for Importing Vinyl LPs, If You Have a Turntable and an Old Stereo Receiver.......2007-03-27

I have successfully used this product to digitize a number of vinyl LP's and am quite pleased with the results. I connected the iMic to the "tape out" jacks on my old stereo receiver (which fortunately still has the "phono" inputs for connecting a turntable) and to a USB port on my G5 iMac. The Final Vinyl software packaged with this product worked fine, although the documentation could be better. The software includes a number of equalization settings if you wish to modify the original sound, however if your vinyl LPs are badly scratched, you'll need to use some other software besides Final Vinyl to filter out the noise. For vinyl LP albums in reasonably good shape, the iMic/Final Vinyl combination works very nicely. Note: This happy ending only occurred after considerable frustration caused by my attempt to directly connect the iMic to my G5 iMac using a separate "Griffin Turntable Connection Cable with Grounding". The results from this setup were not satisfactory in any way--very weak signal, and lots of background noise. The signal coming directly out of the turntable is not strong enough to make satisfactory recordings without an amplifier in the setup. Connecting the iMic to my old stereo receiver fixed these issues. A separate phonograph turntable preamplifier would probably also give good results if you don't have an old receiver or amp with the phono inputs.
