What is DVD-R/RW?
DVD-R (which is pronounced "dash R" not "minus R") uses organic dye technology, like CD-R, and is compatible with most DVD drives and players. Waste of money.......2006-12-05

I bought these to use with my Pioneer DVR 810HR and DVR 57H recorders. I haven't had any problems with any other brands so far. These discs were repeatedly rejected by both units. I tried 5 discs, all with the same frustrating results. I'm going to send them back for a refund, but I'm out the s/h costs. If I could I'd give these 0 stars.

I bought these discs so that I could record TV shows on my Samsung DVD recorder and play them while traveling, on my iBook 14". Unfortunately these discs aren't recognized on my iBook, nor my G4 Quicksilver desktop machine with a Pioneer DV$-104 drive, nor on my Compaq notebook. So basically these discs are of little value to me. They will only record and play in my home DVD players...not on my Macs. Macintosh users beware.

Work Fine with TiVo DVD burners... but why not free shipping?.......2005-11-21

Used these without problem in both a Toshiba RS-TX60 and a Humax DRT-800, both TiVo DVD burning units.

I'd much rather use DVD-RWs like these... more ecologically friendly... multiple read, writes, and if you later change your mind or don't want a long-term archive, you can write right over them. Sure they are more expensive but DVD-Rs strike me as risky (have a failure and you have a coaster) and too much the disposable culture.

I bought this when there was a $6 rebate which covered the outrageous $6 shipping charge. So, a hassle then, but at least, the shipping was eventually covered (well, actually I'm still waiting for the rebate). So...

NOTE: THIS ITEM DOES NOT COME WITH THE FREE SHIPPING! That makes it less attractive but you'll still be hard pressed to find such a good price per disk.

What is DVD+R/RW?
DVD+R/RW is an erasable format based on CD-RW technology that became available in late 2001. It is supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha, and others, though it is not supported by the DVD Forum. I just purchased the 25-pack spindle of this disc from Amazon. I had read the negative reviews here stating numerous problems/errors with them. Since there was a rebate involved, I wanted to verify the quality of the discs before I mailed off the UPC (and thereby nullify the possibility of returning them).

Using Nero on my Benq DW1620 drive, I ran a full-disc test burn w/verify at 4X on all 25 discs. Each and every one of them verified successfully.

Code: RICOHJPN W11Remember that not all drives, nor all media, are created equal. They don't always work well together. CD-R/RW had this same problem earlier on, but improved over time. It just so happens that Ritek/Ridata is a recommended brand of media for my drive.

A quick web search should provide CD/DVD resources that can help pair your drive with a brand of media that has given good results. Manufacturers, too, sometimes list media that has been tested and "approved" for use with their drive(s).

Almost 75 perfect disks.......2004-12-19

I've almost finished burning my 3rd 25-pack spindle of these with no problems. I burned them using my Akai DVDRW120 stand-alone burning deck & my Plextor burner on my computer. I see the 25-pack has been discontinued! Why is it every time I'm happy with a product they stop carrying it? I just ordered the 50-pack spindle instead.

Update- Jan. 24, 2005
Only about half of the first dozen or so of the 50-pack spindle worked... & then just barely with many of the working discs skipping or locking up on parts. Not 1 of the rest of the spindle worked. They wouldn't even format! "Invalid Disk" error messages on most blank discs. These problems were observed on both my computer & my stand alone burner. About the 15th from the bottom I found 1 with a deep gouge & several deep scatches in it, but the rest looked spotless.

I've also used up almost half of their 25-packs of DVD+R, DVD-R, & their DVD-RW with no problems on my computer, but my stand-alone burner will only burn on DVD+R & DVD+RW.

There's definitlely something wrong with their 50-packs folks. They may be bad batches or they're too fragile to be packed on a 50-pack spindle & withstand the ruthless banging around of shipping. I noticed the 100 pack got 1 good review out of only 1 review. I'll wait to see more reviews on it. In the meantime, I did notice they're carrying the 25 pack spindles again... I'll stick with those.

Very pleased!.......2004-09-29

I was worried by the bad experience others had with this media. Mine shipped from KY and the first thing I did was visually inspect the media to see if there were any obvious flaws. All was well on this front.

The media code is RICOHJPNW11. I've burnt four DVD+RW's from this spindle in a NEC 2500A and Benq 800 drive. Verification was perfect. Nice to have 4x media after using 1x DVD-Rw Optodisc media (which redefines the meeting of unreliable!). My hard drive backups have now become a whole lot easier!

Do check your spindles when they arrive given other peoples experiences - Amazon has a good return policy.

Over half my discs had errors. I have tried different softwares and drives and it still gives errors.

I have been using Ritek/Ridata DVD-R and DVD+RW disks for several months and have been very satisfied. Not a bad burn yet. I was excited to order additional DVD+RW disks for their added versatility. My previous experience with the DVD+RW disks was with shiny top surface vs. matte surface with this order. I don't know if that makes any difference as the recording surface on both has the same appearance.

Disappointment resulted quite quickly. As a previous poster indicated, the disks all had a small ridge of scratched surface around the outer perimeter of the recording surface. In my case, the disks would appear to record correctly. It was not until I tried to access the files that it would generate an error. The disk was unreadable. I had at least 4 bad writes in the first 10 disks. It seems that it is only a problem with almost full disks. Partially used disk didn't seem to have a problem (in an unscientific sampling!). I will try a replacement order and if that one exhibits that same scratched area, I guess a refund will be the only option. Too bad because Ritek is usually an excellent brand that I have had good luck with, and the price was too good to pass up.
