Selective Hearing.......2007-01-15
Sturdy, looks great, charges easily however it does not operate as easily as it sounds - commands have to be repeated too many times loudly in order for it to work, sometimes it does things on its own with no voice or touch commands. It was purchased as a gift, but its going back.
Don't buy an InVoca!!!.......2006-12-29
I tried two of these products (hoping that one of them would work) and found that they were poorly constructed and didn't work as advertised. The recommended batteries are almost impossible to find. The charger base doesn't hold the Invoca very well and the least bump will send it sailing. And you have to have the oversized control situated in the charger "just right" to get it to charge up at all. It was also difficult to program. I spent a number of hours and eventually ended up at the beginning again. Finally, voice recognition worked intermittently, at best. And you needed to have it right up to your mouth to get it to respond. We didn't try to see if it would respond to different voices. Skip the InVoca and put your money into a button operated universal. We got a computer programed unit made by Logitech and it has worked easily and flawlessly the very first time.

TELEMANIA INVOCA VOICE ACTIVATED 8 DEVICE UNIVERSAL REMOTE WITH
Customer Reviews:
Does not work.......2006-02-27
I bought this for my father for Christmas. Before you can program the voice features, you must enter a programming code to pair the device's functions to your appliance (TV, cable box, vcr, etc.) Unfortunately, none of the supplied codes worked with my father's standard Sony TV. I tried to use the code search feature--that failed as well. I took the remote home and tried it on my Hitachi TV--same problem. So, I tried to access the Invoca support web site listed in the documentation--www.invoca.net; the site does not exist. I bought this device from Brookstone--they take anything back at any time; thank goodness because I'd otherwise be out $50 for a useless piece of junk.
Don't buy this item. It doesn't work as a universal remote, let alone a voice-command remote.
Product Description
Just tell your TV what to do—"Change channels", "Lower the volume", or "Record". Your hands-free voice commands operate the TV, DVD, VCR and cable satellite with no buttons or keys to press. No batteries required, rechargeable cradle ensures the remote is always on. Easy set-up process lets you program up to 54 commands. Perform multi-step functions with a single command—switching the TV to channel 3, and pressing “play” on the VCR all at once. Recognizes up to four voices. Even remembers your favorite stations.

Invoca Perfect.......2003-01-04
The Invoca will work 100% as advertised. The problem is that in order to get it working perfectly, I had to use some techniques
I only learned through experimentation. These things are not in
the manual.
Not ready for prime-time.......2002-12-24
I got the inVoca remote control as a gift. There are three main problems with the device:
1) In many cases you find yourself yelling the voice command 2, 3 times until the device recognizes it. Some words are simply impossible for it to decipher, for example, "Fox". Others like "turn on", "turn off" are too similar for the device to react properly.
2) Once a verbal command is properly understood, the device is very slow in terms of processing it (especially if you compare with the time to simply punch the corresponding keys).
3) Finally I got sick of yelling at it and decided to use it just as a normal universal remote. Sadly, most of the useful buttons are tucked inside the unit. You have to slide out an auxiliary internal unit. This unit is very bulky and it is simply too cumbersome to handle.
On the bright side, there is one aspect that I did like a lot, although it does not have anything to do with the voice interface. The device supports high level commands -- macros -- which allows one to do a bunch of low level commands by punching a single button (like switch the TV tunner to an aux input, turn on the VCR, and start playing it). You can even associate this task with a voice command (assuming you can make it recognize the command!).
In a nutshell, it seems to me that someone rushed this unit to the market just to release it in time for the Holidays. But it does need a lot more of engineering to make it usable.

Not worth the money.......2007-07-01
This was purchased as a gift for my mom who has a hard time dealing with a regular remote after her strokes. Spent a good hour or so 'training' the thing to our voices. Don't know why - it would just change channels in the middle of a show and when you tried to tell it the station you wanted, it wouldn't change. So for all that training - it didn't seem to hear a difference in voices and any sound apparently will trigger it to take an action.
Avoid this item.......2006-01-29
My wife is disabled and has difficulty with fine motor control. Using even a large-button TV remote is difficult for her so this would have been an ideal item had it worked. While setup is not difficult, the unit would recognize her spoken commands only occasionaly. It would send random commands to the TV and change channels constantly without any user input. We tried every remedy outlined in the manual to correct the problems but after three days, we gave up. This remote was used only with one user and only for a TV, even though the manual claims that it will control several units and can work with four different user voices. We really wanted this thing to work and are very dissapointed that it does not.
Interesting Fun Device.......2004-03-18
It is a bit tempramental with the commands sometimes, but if you actually read and follow the instructions, it does work!. The key is to use a normal voice & if you find it is not recognizing it, then do it over. The infra-red is a nice powerful signal in mine at least and I like the fact I dont have to acually point it at the device. Over all, good but way too expensive. Get an X-10 8 in 1 learning remote instead (it also will control your lights in the house). Much better value.
Not ready for "prime time"!.......2003-12-21
I'd like to think that I'm a fair minded person, but as hard as I try, I can't think of anything positive to say about this expensive paperweight! It has little, if any, discernment over which sounds are your commands, and which are the sounds from the television/audio center...and that's if you can get so far as to get it to do ANYTHING but flash the LED light. Operations defined in the manual often don't coincide with what happens when you follow the instructions and press the keys. It simply is a bad piece of product design, however well thought out it may have been, in the concept stages.
To make matters worse, just try accessing the manufacturer's web site. They're either down, or already are out of business...
Avoid this device like the plague!
Three stars for the Star Trek factor.......2003-11-16
I'm a Star Trek fan, and I wanted to be just like Scotty talking to the computer. The voice activation feature worked as long as I completely controlled my voice. The trouble is, sometimes I'm eating, sometimes I have a cold, sometimes I'm talking, sometimes I'm exercising, sometimes I'm doing other things that keep me from talking to the remote control.
If I had wanted to make it work, I could have. It doesn't fit the way I typically watch TV. I don't think any voice-activated remote control would, at least not with the current technology. For me, the technology would have to support commands given while eating popcorn!
Aside from the voice activation, it's heavy, klunky and not much fun to hold. You have to slide out a tray for anything but the basic functions if you are going use it by hand. The buttons are intuitively placed but not back-lit. The LCD screen takes some effort to read in the light and impossible to read in the dark.
I give it three stars for the voice activation feature, even though I found it clumsy to use and got tired of horsing with it. It's a perfectly good remote if it supports your equipment, which can be easily checked in the manual. For this price, though, you can get a remote control with learning functions and backlit buttons.
