Sony Reader.......2007-05-21
This review is about my experience with the Sony Reader. I bought my reader last November and downloaded my first book. I loved the reader. It surpassed my expectations until I attempted to download the next two books. Both books resulted in an error message. I was charged for both books. I can go to the library and find my books, but when I click on them to try to read them, I get a message that says I am not authorized to read them on this computer. I sent an e-mail help message and was totld that I would receive a response in 24 hours. Three days later I still had not received a response so I called the help line. I explained the situation to the service rep and was told that he would call back later in the day. He never did. Over the course of the next 20 days I made a total of 10 calls and talked to a rep each time who told me they would call back later the same day. Not one ever called me back. Finally after having my reader about a month and not being able to download books to my computer I called Sony and made arrangements to return the reader. I included a letter explaining all of my attempts to get help from the Ft Myers, FL service center and I thought perhaps some would call me to talk to me about the situation. I purchased over $30 worth of books which will not download to my computer and I was not re-inbursed for them. It appears that Sony is intent on selling product but has no customer service back up. It is strange that the 1st book loaded with no problem and after that would not download. I still go to my account occassionally and try to re-download the books and it fails every time. I loved the reader and would have rated it 5 stars, but it was worth exactly nothing if I could not download books to it. Sony has made no attempt to re-imburse me for the two books which I purchased and was unable to download.
A few comments on the reader.......2007-03-13
I noticed this case although Amazon doesn't carry the reader itself. So I thought I would make a few comments on the case that comes with the reader, and then the device itself here.
The original cover simulates the cover of a book, and a nice one at that, with a leather-like material bordering some kind of thick, synthetic fabric. It's also secured very tightly to the back of the reader unit, and despite the illustration in the manual, I still haven't figured out how to get it off. The cover also has small magnets that help hold the leaves together against the metallic reader case when closed.
I wanted to make a few comments on the actual reader itself. Although it's the first release of the product, and suffers from a few shortcomings, which various reviewers elsewhere have commented on, I still think it's a quality product. It's easy to use, stores all the information I want, and the screen is quite good.
However, there are some things you should know if you're contemplating buying one. First, to really use the device skillfully takes a bit of practice, since the software it comes with requires some learning. It interfaces directly, for example, with the website that wants to sell you books for the device, with the website appearing in a frame inside the program's main screen interface, so that initially you don't even know the URL.
If you're planning to use the reader to store a few books, no problem, it will do that. However, if you want to store hundreds of books and files--which it will if you upgrade the memory--be sure to download them only a few at a time to the device's memory. Also, I review on Amazon and tried to download all 1200+ of my reviews to its memory. This was just too much for the software and it hung. Also, with hundreds of titles in memory, the reader now took several times as long to boot up. Yes, it actually "boots up," taking about 5-10 seconds to finish that process. No doubt the speed of the reader and that of the interface will get better with subsequent revisions, but for now the bandwidth is, shall we say, somewhat limited.
That having been said, it's perfectly fine for downloading a few dozen books and files, even very large ones. The software enables you to download the purchased books from the web. The books are typically about 50% off once you get the 20% Connect discount. If it's a recent, popular book, you may only get a 20% discount. That's not much of a discount considering you're not getting a hard, paper copy, but if the book is a few years old usually the price is about half of the cost of the new book. Classic novels and such usually cost 3 to 4 bucks, but I'd recommend you find those at the well known free ebook download sites. To give Sony some credit, if you register the device at the Connect website, you can get a $50 credit to buy books. I used it to buy half a dozen older books and a couple of current titles, which isn't a bad deal at all.
I need to make a few more comments on downloading from the web. I've downloaded a few dozen books so far from the Connect website, and more than half of the time, the download freezes and hangs the first time I try it. If you cancel the download and try again, it will often work the second time. When you download a book, click on the "status" icon and you will get a little bar graph of the download progress. If it stops part way through the download for more than 20-30 seconds, cancel it and start again. Books can be downloaded to the reader by dragging and dropping them from the "library" to the reader. The "library" is where they're placed when downloading from the web first, which is on your hard disk. Apparently you can't download them directly to your reader, but that's okay since you want to have a backup copy on your hard drive anyway.
People have complained about the limited file support, but all I need is the ability to read Wordpad files and rich text documents. It will read Adobe acrobat files, but be forewarned that if the document is in the usual two-column format the print will probably be too small to read on the reader. However, you can always save a copy from inside Acrobat as rich txt, and then manually increase the font size. That usually means doubling the font size from 12 to 24 points to make it large enough.
Overall, I like the device and I'm computer savvy enough to manage with it despite some bugs and peculiarities. The one complaint I have is that the screen background is dark gray enough so that the black font lacks some contrast; no doubt this will improve in future models but look at it yourself and see if you can work with it. Also, there is no backlight, but then that allows the battery to power it for they say 7000 page flips, and that's a lot of reading before recharging.
One last thing. There's a hard reboot button on the back of the reader a couple of inches from the botton of the case. It's hard to see because you have to peel the fabric cover back to see it and get access. You'll need a paper clip or something with a right angle bend at the tip to reach the tiny hole because of the attached case. Also, the manual says not to leave the cover in the hot sun. Well, you shouldn't do that anyway for something with an LCD screen, but I wonder what it is about the cover that can be damaged. Maybe it warps?
If you hold down the button that enlarges the font for five seconds, the screen will change from normal to landscape mode, for which the fonts are somewhat bigger.
One final caveat. The reader will not function as any sort of PDA. It doesn't even have a built-in calendar. I don't see why that couldn't have been done, but anyway, be aware that it's only a reader and not even a stripped down PDA. However, the reader has several utility functions which allow you to set bookmarks, look at your history, and create separate "libraries." However, the manual says the libraries can only be created on the original internal memory (which is only 128 meg) rather than on add in cards, such as the 2 gig Sony memory stick that I purchased. One other quirk is that books placed in both the original on-board memory and in the memory stick cause the titles to show up twice in the main directory or titles list.
But overall, this is a good product and I'm pretty happy with it despite a few shortcomings.

Good idea.......2007-09-23
Very nice. I didn't get any "fake leather" feel from the case at all and the inside is lined with a very smooth suede. Also, taking the Reader out of the case or installing it into the case is a much easier process than in other covers.
Besides looking very nice (sort of like a slim pocket book or agenda) the case is very sturdy. The hard cardboard flaps underneath the leather-like cover feels much more solid than the case which comes packaged with the Reader. Also, the solidity of the cardboard is nice when you're craving that "hardcover book feel."
I guess there are some flaws, but they are pretty easy to live with. If you're walking around with the Reader in its M-Edge case flopping around in your bag, you'll notice that it comes loose and slips out a bit, but definitely not enough to damage the screen or anything else. Also, some people might think that the sturdiness of this case is a little too bulky and would want something sleeker. Finally, it's a little bit more inconvenient to put this away--for example, I've been in waiting rooms before and had to take a little extra time fumbling this case closed. In the pre-packed black Reader case (and with a regular p-book for that matter) you just close it and go. However, I think that the little latch provides more security, so it's worth it. With the original black case, I'd notice that it was always opening in my purse, exposing the screen to scratching.
Overall, I would say this was worth the money. It has some drawbacks, but it's still a very nice gift for yourself or someone who loves their Sony Reader.

Bad Interference.......2006-12-28
I purchased these because I wanted a cheapie pair of speakers for the office into which I could plug my headphones. Unfortunately they just pick up too much interference and make horrible popping sounds. I am returning them.
Nice sound, but..........2006-11-12
These speakers have good loud, clear sound for their size. The problem with them is that they are almost always plagued by interference from cell phones and who knows what else. They make loud popping and buzzing noises that are incredibly annoying, and I often have to turn them off and use my weak laptop speakers instead. It's quite aggravating.
CA speakers.......2006-07-02
I bought these speakers for a christmas gift for my sister,s iPod and portable CD player. The speakers worked good until now. There is a buzzing noise and they won't play anything from the iPod. The sound quality was not that great either. A big lack of bass. I would recommend the 2.1 speakers with a sub. They would sound a lot better and last longer.
