Customer Reviews:
Get the facts before you buy this TV.......2007-06-07
Some things to think about:
If you were able to read the owner's manual before your purchase, you might think twice about buying this TV. Unfortunately, the owner's manual as of this writing is not available on Toshiba's site. I found out the hard way by buying this TV.
The VGA input only supports a max of 1024 x 768. That's not even wide screen! If you are thinking to yourself, "That's no problem, I'll just hook my Media Center PC up to the HDMI port," then you should think again. The owner's manual says that you should NEVER connect a PC to the HDMI port. It doesn't give a reason.
If that isn't enough, how about this: It's true that the screen is a 1080p screen, but the TV can't accept a 1080p signal! Yes, you read that correctly. This TV can only accept up to 1080i.
Now that I have that out of the way... I love the TV otherwise. I just feel downright mislead on connectivity and supported resolutions. I'm very disappointed. This TV should not be advertised as a 1080p set.
It looks like the newer model (42LX177) that replaces this TV has corrected some of those issues.
Toshiba 1080 Bliss.......2007-03-13
I went with this TV after a ton of research and it's high rating also by Consumer Reports. In my living room, one side is open with two six foot sliding glass doors to the deck, with a fireplace between. With plasma it would have been nothing but a glare fest because of the glass on a plasma screen. I was also was concerned about the black levels on LCD, NOT anymore. The blacks on this set are just as black, the color is WOW with no adjustments needed. I have it set up with HD DirecTV and the wow factor on 1080 stuff is high. For now I went with a upscaling DVD at 80 bucks with a HDMI output until the HDDVD/BlueRay prices come down, and I must say it looks great on this set. VERY glad I went with this!
Amazing picture and options.......2006-12-26
This really is quite an impressive piece of equipment. I was sold on the 1080p, dual HDMI and PC input but couldn't figure out why I would need an RJ45 connector on a TV. Toshiba really thought about this one.
As a network engineer I have a file server in my home so that my family can share documents and pictures. Most people don't have this, but if you have more than one computer you might think about investing in a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. The Toshiba TV can talk SMB directly to the server or NAS device. This means that even if all the computers in your home are off the TV can still display pictures or play MP3s directly from the NAS.
I have only one problem with this, the maximum number of images that can be displayed on the TV is 1000. This is not a per directory limitation but a per drive limitation. If you have more than 1000 pictures on your shared drive (even if they're in different directories) the TV will only see the first 1000. Hopefully Toshiba will resolve this limitation in a future firmware release.
Returned My Sharp Aquos and got this........2006-12-07
Well Let me first say I had bought the Sharp Aquos 4262u. I know I didn't listen to the reviews about banding and poor construction figuring it wouldn't happen to me. I was wrong. The sharp looked great until I watched a football game and had banding ( static lines) running across the screen. I returned it and picked up the Toshiba 42hl196. Wow what a picture. In my own ignorance I never really even looked at this set, mainly because I was focused on the overpriced Sony xbr2 and the sharp.
Let me tell you and others have said the same to me after seeing it in my house this is without doubt the best looking picture on analog tv out. They all look good in Hi-Def it's watching regular programming that sets flat tv's apart. Most Flat screen TV's have a blurriness to them on analog tv, Not this set it's as clear as a tube set.
The case is a class act as well and it gives you more functions that other sets in it's class.
The 42HL196 uses Toshiba's state of the art Cinespeed XHD LCD panel for a native resolution of 1,920X1,080, and it has a response time of 8 milliseconds to prevent ghosting and other on-screen motion artifacts. Twelve-bit digital video processing and a 64-color management system also assist in image and color representation, resulting in a detailed and realistic picture. The 176-degree viewing angle is another big plus, as is the 3:2 pulldown that eliminates the uneven motion introduced during the film-to-video conversion process.
With its ATSC tuner, the 42HL196 doesn't need any extra set-top boxes to display over-the-air and cable HD content. In addition, a CableCARD slot and QAM tuner mean this LCD TV is digital cable-ready. There is a full complement of PIP and multiwindow viewing options, and the 42HL196 provides access to TV Guide On Screen's eight-day programming guide.
Connectivity is another strong point for the 42HL196. In addition to a pair of HDMI inputs, a 15-pin D-sub PC input and an I/R passthrough, this set has an Ethernet (RJ-45) connection that allows you to view JPEG and listen to MP3 files via a home network. The 42HL196 also has a pair of RF inputs, an S-video input, two HD component video inputs and an optical digital audio output.
Stereo speakers are located below the screen, and they produce an unimpressive 10 watts of output per channel. Audio options include the usual simulated surround sound and automatic volume leveling, as well as a much-needed bass boost. Other convenience features on the 42HL196 are a full-screen freeze, a favorite channel memory, a game mode and a game timer to keep the kids from playing for days at a time. The handy universal remote control has a surf function that automatically returns to the original channel after you are done flipping.
Don't think twice about this set. I love it.
