Audio quality is disappointing.......2007-12-21
I bought this because I want play my mp3 player in my car. I commute through the new york, new jersey area so I knew before I bought it that it might struggle against the megawatt stations that dominate the FM frequencies here. It does struggle, but I have found a few freqencies that are passable. I planned on removing the built-in attenuation to get a better signal, but I'm not sure I'll bother anymore.
The killer for this product for me is the audio quality. It is nowhere near as good as a decent FM station, better than a cell phone connection, and maybe better than AM. My car has a stock stereo in it with pretty average sound, but I wasn't willing to take the additional hit to sound quality so will find another way to listen.
I guess it depends on expectations whether this is a great product or one for the back of the cupboard. It certainly worked as it said it would, I just expected better sound quality.
Poor range, needs to go outside of 88.1 FM.......2007-12-17
I'm returning this device, which I wanted to use to broadcast audio from my TV over FM.
Unfortunately, you can only tune it to 88.1 - 107.9 -- it would be more useful if it went outside that range (where there aren't any FM radio stations), especially in the 87's.
The critical limitation is the range. The range in the product description is 30 ft. I got about 5 feet, and that was with static. I only got a relatively clear signal at about 6 inches. I tried a number of stations.
Very disappointing.
Bad reception...........2007-12-07
I don't recommend this ones, because it doesn't give a good volume on your receiver.
Cheap and it works (sometimes)........2007-12-03
I guess I am a little picky when it comes to sound quality. I have a line in on my car stereo and my mp3 player sounds great. My wife's car doesn't have a line in so I need to use a FM transmitter to get sound to the stereo but didn't want to spend much too much. Well I didn't expect too much from this transmitter and I'm glad I didn't because I would have been disappointed. It does transmit but it doesn't sound great and suffers from interference often (I don't live in a big city I wouldn't even bother with this if I did). I did add a longer line in cable, 6 feet, and that seems to help some since it basically increased the size of the antenna. But my wife isn't picky about sound quality so this is fine for her, you get what you pay for!
bad signal.......2007-11-26
I'm i little disappointed. I use it in my car mainly, and the signal is very weak. And it was so hard to find a frequency free, maybe it has to do with it.
One good think, is easy to use.

Doesn't work with Motorola RAZR V3M.......2006-07-18
As far as FM Transmitters go, this one probably works as good as any of them out there. This unit shuts off after 60 sec. of no radio signal. According to Belkin tech support, there is no way to override this timeout. Because the RAZR uses a mini USB headphone jack, the user has to use the headset adapter (supplied with the phone or bought separately), an adapter to convert from 2.5 to 3.5, and then you can plug in to the FM transmitter. Because of all of these adapters, it doesn't see a radio signal therefore will only remain powered on for 1 minute at a time. Pretty darn useless for RAZR owners.

Every rose has it's thorns..........2007-07-12
Some of the reviews of this product are from customers who purchased it refurbished from an "e-tailer". Let's give common sense a chance folks, if you buy anything refurbished, you take your chances. There's a reason why those units were sent back. Secondly, it should be understood merchandise can be obtained for lower prices from e-tailers at the sacrafice of service. I paid a little more for mine from Tweeter, but I was able to have my questions answered because I am a steady customer. The service IS worth something. There's a reason why manufacturers distribute through retailers--for customer service! Many of these problems would either not occur or be addressed by the retailer. Perhaps they should have purchased it from Amazon, as they are one of the few web-based dealers out there that will support their products. They cannot provide the level of support that a store front can. It's just not possible based on logistics.
Granted, this receiver is complex, and the remote is a pain, but it is a trade-off for the vast number of features. There will come a day when these devices will come with a PDA-type device for configuring, but it's not here yet. When it does, you'll be able to see everything on a monitor. For now, we have to live with the 2-line display. The only issue that bothers me about the remote is the battery life, but that ultimately can be corrected. This receiver puts out a full, warm sound uncommon with many other brands. It provides a great deal of flexibility for setting crossover preferences, re-directing sound frequency and multiple surround options which actually are applicable! It also has a very strong center channel, with a great deal of range, even into the lower frequencies. If you can endure the difficulty of the interface, you will find it is worth the time invested.
Just a word of warning........2007-02-18
I bought a Denon AVR-3803. Sound to the back speaker failed. Bought from an authorized dealer, but it took Denon three months to "fix it". The fix lasted about two weeks. Great receivef\r (except difficult to figure out) but warranty repair service is terrible.
do not buy.......2007-01-14
HDMI does not work with DVD players or PC video card. Only Component connections get a picture thru this reciever. JUNK!!
Banana plugs and the AVR3806.......2007-01-02
Just a note on the comment that banana plugs do not work with this receiver. Individual banana plugs do in fact work fine. If you have a speaker cable where the positive and negative wires terminate in two banana plugs joined together by a plastic sleeve, you will have to remove the plastic sleeve on the Denon end. If the banana plugs are moulded together (I have never seen this, but I'm just trying to imagine the reviewer's situation) then you will need a new speaker cable.
Why?
From wikipedia: "in many European Countries, especially Germany, the banana plug is coincidentally the same size as the live pins of an electrical outlet, delivering a lethal 230 volts to the user and to the speaker or other attached equipment. Recent EU regulations prohibit banana plugs".
Check out the Denon customer service before you buy.......2006-07-29
I bought a refurbished Denon AVR3806 from (reseller name omitted), which is a Denon authorized reseller for their B-stock products. At the time some online retailers were selling new unit at roughly the same price as the refurbished Denon on this authorized e-tailer. I chose to buy refurbished with them just for the "peace of mind" that Denon will honor 90-day warranty. The unit arrived with a totally broken front panel, 3 buttons were missing and appeared to be pushed into the unit itself. Called the e-tailer asking for an exchange because this is not exactly a "refurbished" unit. The e-tailer refused to help but gave me a number 630-741-0300 to contact Denon. They said that they just take the boxes from Denon and ship to customers. Any problem would be with the Denon "refurbishing" process. In their words even if Denon puts bricks in the cardboard boxes they would never know and are not responsible.
I then called denon and after much holding eventually got a rep. Explained my situation. Initially the rep wanted to send me those buttons so I can fix my newly purchased receiver by myself. After I explained that the buttons and the board that they attached to were pushed into the unit, and it is way beyond my ability to repair a Denon receiver, the rep eventually agreed to take the unit in for an exchange. The next day I received a FedEx EXPRESS envelope, inside there is a call tag for sending the unit to Denon's Itasca, IL service center. The receiver was shipped and FedEx tracking indicated it was delivered to Denon on June 26.
During the past month I tried numerous times to call Denon for the status. Most of the time as soon as I dial option 2 for service, I got disconnected. Once or twice I was "lucky" to get through their first tier of auto-attendant, only to be put on hold for over an hour before I hung up.
So I spent almost a thousand dollars and now I do not even know when or whether I will get my receiver back. The AVR3806 receiver itself might be good product, but Denon customer service is the worst that I have experienced. There are many equally good audio gears on the market. For my next purchase it will definitely not be a Denon.

Great except for the remote.......2006-11-05
This receiver definitely upconverts analog to HDMI - I have an TiVo Series II (among other things) connected to it via S-video - with only a single HDMI cable to the television. I am also sending sound to 3 zones - and getting great results (Polk RTi speakers). Performance-wise, it is everything I hoped for when I bought it.
It is a complicated unit - I used a professional installer. Additionally, the remote control is ridiculous - replace it with a Universal Remote. I never planned on using the remote that came with it, but rated it only 4 stars instead of 5 because of the remote and the level of complication involved in setting it up and understanding it.
HDMI CONVERSION RIP OFF.......2006-06-10
I HAVE HAD THIS RECIEVER FOR MONTHS AND AM NOW GETTING IT HOOKED UP TO HDTV ( PANASONIC TH-50PHD8UK ). THIS RECEIVER AVR-3806 DOES NOT CONVERT ANALOG( COMPONENT CONNECTIONS) TO HDMI OUTPUT. AND IT DOES NOT CONVERT HDMI INPUT TO HDMI OUTPUT EITHER. A COMPLETE RIP OFF!!! MOTOROLA DCT6412 DUAL DVR HMDI OUTPUT AND COMPONENT OUTPUT FROM RCN CABLE BOX PRODUDCES NO PICTURE OR SOUND THRU HDMI ON THIS RECEIVER BECAUSE THE HDCP PROTECTION DOESNT WORK AS ADVERTISED. SAME GOES WITH MY TIVO (TOSHIBA RS-TX60)NO PICTURE!! DO NOT BUY THIS RECEIVER IF YOU THINK YOU WILL BE USING HMDI OR COMPONENT CONNECTIONS, BECAUSE EVEN MY 2 STRAIGHT DVD TOSHIBA PLAYERS (SD-3805 AND SD-2700)OR MY PC ( ASUS A8N32 SLI W/ NVIDA GEFORCE 7900 GTX) HOOKED UP TO THE RECEIVER VIA DVI/HDMI CANT PRODUCE A PICTURE GOING INTO THIS RECIEVER AND OUT VIA ALL COMPONENT HOOKUP OR DIGITAL HOOKUP OR COMBINATION OF ANALOG/ DIGITAL. I AM NOT A NOVICE AT THIS AND THE ONLY REASON I UPGRADED TO THIS RECEIVER WAS THE HDMI UPCONVERT FEATURE. TRULY A COMPLETE RIP OFF!!! AND TO BE HONEST THE SOUND OF THIS RECEIVER IS NO BETTER THAN THE $300 PIONEER RECEIVER ( VSX-D850S )IT REPLACED.
Excellent receiver but not for novice.......2006-01-16
I bought this receiver in November of 2005 and have had it two months. The performance is excellent as is the sound, although admittedly I have not tried a different receiver on my current speakers for the sake of comparison. It drives a new set of Klipsch speakers in a 22' x 22' room with tall 14' ceilings -- and I could hear a difference between the default settings and the sound quality after running the Auto Equalizer program that analyzed sound at six listening points within my room.
This receiver has every feature I could imagine having and more! I give it a strong recommentation for those buyers wanting high performance. And, prices are obviously dropping --about $1300 in 11/05, $950 in 1/06, so who knows what it will be when it is your turn to buy?
Two cons:
1. It is COMPLICATED to set up this receiver because of all the options. Alas, the manual assumes a high level of knowledge and is poorly written. The offset to this is that Denon's telephone support staff have been patient and cooperative. You'll have to find their telephone number on the web.
2. The remote control is, technically, a universal, but it is cludgy for handling multiple components. Only a technophile could love having to press 6 buttons to start a movie. I suggest getting a more easily programmed remote control, such as a Logitech Harmony, if you want your wife and kids to be able to navigate this beast!
Excellent sound that doesn't lack on inputs.......2005-11-16
This is a great audio video reciever that has all the function you need for your system and it sounds excellent, multiple inputs with video upconversion from composite to S-video to Component and now HDMI, although it only Has two HDMI inputs your never going to need any more than that one for HD-DVD and another for HD-DBS or HD cable, if you still own a VHS you should know you still need two use a composite video to your Monitor or TV for the fact that copy guard and video upconversion don't cooperate.
Excellent, HDMI works fine........2005-10-24
This was an upgrade from a Denon AVR-3200 for me, and it was worth every penny! It's got loads of great features like XM ready, HDMI switching, Denon Link, Audessey EQ, etc. I have a dvd player and a dvr hooked up to the HDMI ins, and the output going to my tv, and it all works fine. I have an Xbox, PS2 and a Gamecube connected to the component inputs and the signal is output over the HDMI, so I only need one cable to connect to my tv! Its got loads of surround options, and DVD-A and SACD sound great. The calibration microphone is included.
I suggest the other reviewer have his cable box looked at, because the problem isn't with the Denon.
I only wish that, for the money, this had THX Ultra 2. Other than that its great, highly recommended!
