Amazon.com Product Description

VTech's ip5825 cordless phone system offers 5.8 GHz digital spread spectrum operation and a comprehensive combination of features at an affordable price. 5.8 GHz DSS transmission represents the latest in today's cordless phone technologies, offering clearer reception, increased range and security, and less interference than older phones using the much busier 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz bands.

The ip5825 includes two handsets but requires only one phone jack. Just plug the base unit into any existing jack, and place the second handset and charger anywhere that you need an extra phone—all the latter needs is a power outlet. You can use the two handsets as a convenient around-the-house intercom system, transfer calls between handsets, and even share a conference call.

Ready for caller ID and call waiting (require phone company service), each handset has a three-line backlit LCD that displays the name and number of any incoming call. Up to 50 names and numbers are stored in the handset's memory, which can be accessed at any time by simply pressing arrow keys to scroll through the caller ID log. You can delete entries at any time, and you can display information in English, Spanish, or French.

Two hands-free conversation choices are available: speakerphone (both base and handset) or an optional headset (2.5 mm jack and belt clip included). Additional features include illuminated handset keypads, any key answer, handset volume, a mute button, and redial. The phone has a sleek gray exterior with a modern-looking finish, and it doesn't take up a lot of room. It can even be wall mounted.

What's in the Box
ip5825 cordless phone base unit, two handsets, one remote charger stand, two AC power adapters, one phone line cord, two battery packs, two belt clips, user guide, warranty information.

1 out of 5 stars Lots of problems. The worst cordless phone I have ever owned. .......2007-12-23

Lots of problems. The worst cordless phone I have ever owned. Probably the worst phone I have ever owned. Possibly the worst household appliance I have ever owned. Bad design, implementation, construction, and support.

I kept my Vtech ip5825 despite the problems lots of folks have reported with battery recharging and 2.4 interference. I want to let people know about all the OTHER problems this terrible phone has. Only one of my two handsets had recharging problems. It was also the handset that was physically hot to the touch when recharging.

1) The hot recharging problem is actually noted on the Vtech WebSite FAQs, but with no information as to what to do about it. This is inexcusable. The problem is so common that it is on a FAQ! If the solution is to send it in for a replacement, Vtech should say so. Bad Web support.

2) The belt clip is nice, but Heaven help you if it breaks. Vtech does not sell a replacement, at any price. If you need the belt clip, you can end up with a useless phone for the lack of what should be a 50 cent piece of plastic. Bad sales support.

3) The volume control buttons are prominent and on the side. Very easy to adjust, particularly by accident when you are grabbing the phone. Bad design.

4) The menu system is very clumsy. There are no menu shortcuts. It took a sequence of seven button pushes, watching the screen as I scrolled, in order to mute the ringer when I went to sleep.

5) Muting the ringer also mutes the locator. If the ringer is off, you can lose the handset and the locator won't help you find it. Horribly bad implementation.

6) When dropped, the battery cover often pops off. Poor construction.

7) The phone book only holds 50 numbers, which is a lot less than it sounds like.

8) Editing the phone book is not intuitive. I had to recheck the manual every time for the first few months. Adding numbers from the re-dial list was confusing even *with* the manual.

9) Editing telephone numbers is nearly impossible. If you need to add a "one" in front of a phone number to dial long-distance, you have to delete the entire number and then re-type it!

10) After a year or so, the phone developed so much static that it became unusable. Other folks could hear me, but I couldn't hear them at all. That's when I gave up.

This many different types of problems in just one product strongly suggests that Vtech is a terribly managed company. I will not buy Vtech again and I am recommending to my friends and family that they don't either.

3 out of 5 stars VTech ip5825 5.8 GHz DSS Cordless Speakerphone - Dual Handsets.......2007-05-20

Nice phone overall, but not much volume to the earpiece. I'd rate it a 5 otherwise out of five, but if you can't hear who's calling sometimes, a three is the best I'd give it....

3 out of 5 stars Lasted just under two years.......2007-05-12

The phones worked just fine, very easy to use, no interferences with our wi-fi. We bought them less than two years ago, and around two months ago both phones needed a new battery, first the one we use the most and then about three or four days later, the other one, which we don't use much. After replacing the batteries, the display started to fail, one line at a time. Now it's to the point where one of the phone's display is completely unreadable, and the other one is only somewhat readable in the first line. We were pretty happy with them, and we have given them good use, but it just seems like they are somehow programmed to last a couple of years.

2 out of 5 stars Battery issues.......2007-04-07

This is amazing. I got on Amazon to see if I could buy some additional remote bases for this phone and immediately see the reviews about the same issues I have and have been putting up with because I think we get used to electronic products working poorly. I have the same battery issue and the handset in the main base does get very warm. Nevermind additional handsets, I am just going to buy a different phone. Sounds like a consumer class action is in order!

3 out of 5 stars I am confused and upset!.......2007-04-06

See now... I have loved this phone for the year that I have had it. After the year I noticed battery charging issues. At first I assumed it was because every year batteries need to be changed. Well after coming on here I discovered that a lot of reviewers were posting the same issue that I was experiencing. The main unit base overheats to the point of making you pull back from it. That handset can be charged overnight, then when you pick it up you realize that there was a Warning: Check Battery error displaying and all that charging was rendered useless.

I really love how everything else is but after discovering this I guess I have to switch from this company. I don't really feel like wasting 20 bucks on batteries considering that the main base runs so hot. I think it may actually be what others are complaining about. And yessss! you have to pop out the battery and the phone will work for a bit. SUCKY! VTECH... you suck... recall this product.

1 out of 5 stars Just Awful.......2006-11-14

Had the phone for less than 1 year and I loved it for 1/2 that time until 1 wouldn't ring or the other would hang up. Bought new batteries thinking that was the problem.........It wasn't! Not well made and
V-Tech is not helpful at all. Panasonic next time!!

5 out of 5 stars Why Can't The Bigger Companies Make A Phone This Good?.......2006-09-11

We were in the market for a phone that had 5.8GHz, had buttons 1 through 9, had #, had *, had a button for Mute, and had a button for redial. Any other buttons would reduce the value in our eyes, because we didn't want to go through eight gazillion menus just to mute a call.

This phone keeps it simple, and works perfectly. I was a little concerned about the VTech name, because I was used to Panasonic and Uniden. The VTech phone was far superior to my experiences with Uniden, and it was a bit better than even Panasonic.

I highly recommend this phone if you want perfect performance and a user-friendly phone at a great price point.
