The Uniden TRU9496 is thoughtfully designed for small businesses or homes that find two separate phone lines to be one of life's necessities. The system is expandable to include a total of 10 handsets with charging cradles (available separately). Combining a traditional corded handset with a 5.8 GHz cordless handset, the Uniden TRU9496 offers cordless convenience when you want it, but will continue to provide basic phone service in the event of a power outage. Only the base system with the corded handset requires a phone jack; any additional handsets simply require an electrical outlet to connect the charging cradle. DirectLink two-way radio communication is built into each cordless handset and the base speakerphone, allowing them to function as an in-home intercom system or baby monitor. Redial any of the last three dialed numbers at the touch of a button, activate five-way conference calls or just enjoy the consistent, clear 5.8 GHz digital signal transmission. The base includes a fully digital answering system with up to 15 minutes of recording time. Additional features include an audible message alert, toll saver, remote message retrieval and a choice between personalized or prerecorded outgoing messages. With subscription to local service, the phone is compatible with Call Waiting Caller ID. It will display the name, number and date and time of each call on the backlit LCD, and will store up to 100 names with two numbers each, so you can return calls at the touch of a button. Even without Caller ID service, a phonebook stores 10 of your most frequently-dialed numbers. This is a great alternative to an expensive phone system. It has many useful features like forwarding calls to up to 10 other handsets and all phones work off 1 phone jack. The extra handsets do not need their own phone jack connection. The phones are of great quality as well.

Decent phone... good features, but not compatible with extra handsets (tcx-905) that I purchased based on what others had purchased. Serves me right for not reading everything possible.

This little telephone 2-line "system" does more than the 4-line Panasonic home-office system I bought for $1000 in 2001. We keep finding electronics have gotten much better and better while costing much less. Delighted with this product.
Uneven Sound Quality.......2007-10-26
I purchased this phone for my home office after a colleague recommended it based on her experience. I liked the features, but unfortunately, whenever I called into the office, although they could hear me just fine, I could barely hear the person on the other end; the volume was faint and the quality staticky.
I tried moving the phone to different locations, moving any equipment that may interfere, and using different outlets and jacks, but nothing helped. I switched to my cheapo GE corded phone and the sound quality was crystal clear, so the problem was definitely with the Uniden.
Had to return it; it was simply unusable.
