With the NV-U70 Nav-U system, Sony has decided to take the concept of the small, easy-to-use GPS device as a starting point and then add Sony touches like enhanced sound, a custom interface, and seamless, highly intelligent rerouting capabilities. Sony also developed its own proprietary GPS receiver for the NV-U70, enabling higher sensitivity and fast, accurate positioning.
The included mounting kit makes it easy to place the Nav-U in clear view while you're driving. It's also easy to remove the unit, so you can take it with you on foot.

The NV-U70 is small and unassuming, but it packs a highly visible, bright screen and crisp, clear voice instructions.

The NV-U70's small, slender frame houses a high-brightness, 3.5-inch touch-screen display that features an anti-glare coating for viewing in all situations. In addition to resisting smudges from fingerprints, the monitor also sports a wide viewing angle so folks anywhere in the vehicle can see the screen clearly.
Because light conditions change so much and so rapidly in a car, Sony has also built the unit with a highly intelligent brightness control system. First, the map color changes to account for day and night time viewing. Meanwhile, a light sensor on the side of the unit senses light level changes and brightens or dims the screen in eight sequential steps. The automatic dimmer won't respond to short-term brightness changes, like when you're just passing under bridge. Plus, the auto dimmer only works when the unit is on the cradle, so that when the device is being used on foot, you can't accidentally cover up the light sensor and change the brightness. In addition to the automatic functions, you can also easily control brightness manually. Yes, Sony thought of everything in the screen brightness department.
Sony knows audio and they've brought that expertise to the NV-U70. To help you hear instructions clearly, the unit features a two stereo speakers on the front of the housing and a ported, 1.6-inch woofer in the rear.
The device contains 1 GB of memory, which is preloaded with a comprehensive map of the entire continental USA and Hawaii -- making the NV-U70 ready to navigate out of the box. Additional map data, which includes maps of Puerto Rico, Alaska, and Canada, is provided on a DVD that ships with the NV-U70. Using your PC's USB connection, you can upload this data to the device quickly and easily. An embedded, rechargeable lithium-ion battery gives you up to two hours of power when you want to take the device out of your car (the unit also ships with a vehicle power adapter).
Sony has built a custom interface for the NV-U70 from the ground up that makes it easy to get where you need to go. The simple touch-screen user interface allows you to input addresses via an on-screen keyboard, and you can also search locations by zip code, city, or street. Additionally, you can ask the unit to direct you to the nearest points of interest, such as gas stations, hotels, and restaurants.
The interface features a large arrow that always guides you through the next maneuver, and there's a repeat button when you need a direction repeated. Precise voice timing insures that the spoken commands are always in sync with your location and movements. Intelligent rerouting instantaneously recalculates your route when you take a wrong turn, making it appear that your route is originating from the point of your missed turn or direction. Lastly, a convenient "Home" command instantly directs you to your home address, no matter where you are.

Customer Reviews:
Quick Easy Accurate.......2007-11-09
This device is very easy, simply type in the destination and it will tell you where to go, make a wrong turn and it recalculates to get you back on track. Very easy to set up and go.
Disappointed.......2007-09-25
I would not recommend this product. After researching GPS systems a couple of years ago, I bought this product over the TomTom. I am disappointed in my decision, however, I purchased from Best Buy and got the Performance Service Plan. The PSP allowed me to bring in my Sony GPS and have it replaced with a real, working GPS unit.
The sony was not very difficult for me to use, despite what other reviews have said, and frankly, I don't find my new device or any other device any easier. However, the sony lacks functionality and features that other systems have for a much lower price. The fact that the sony does not announce street names is a problem.
The quality is definitely an issue. Acquiring signal fast is a plus, when it works on the first try. Oftentimes, I would have to restart the unit more than once to get the hourglass to disappear and to make it find a signal. As the unit aged, I had to restart more and more. By the time I got rid of the unit, I would have to restart after each tidbit of data I would put in. (New Destination : Restart; Enter City : Restart; Enter Street Name : Restart... etc.)
All of the stores I have looked at have stopped selling this product. The reason I purchased a Sony in the first place was because I was convinced that Sony is the best at almost all things electronic. It was the sony name that swayed me in the first place. I now realize that this was a mistake. Sony does not support this product, did not release maps in time (an updated map was not available at the time when I was relieved of the unit despite the fact that I had the unit for two years or more) and does not offer any sort of information for those seeking product updates.
Lack of space on the machine is an issue as well. The Full US map fits on the unit when it is new. I removed the full map and replaced it with the midwest when first acquiring my unit. Later, when preparing for a cross-country road trip, the full US map did not fit on the unit. I do not know why. I did not have many favorite places saved (less than 20)
Finally, the sony does not have any features that other models (even lower priced models) don't have.
The only reason I liked the unit compared to my new one is that the Cord from the car-accessory-plug plugs into the "base" and not directly into the unit. This makes it easy to remove the unit from your windshield without having to unplug anything from the back. Press the release button on the cradle and you are free to bring the unit with you or hide it for safekeeping.
Save your money and buy a less expensive model with more functionality and count on it working. The sony is fine if you already know where you are going and aren't counting on it actually getting you anywhere. As stated before, the navigation and user-interface are easy to use and accurate... when they work, which is progressively less as the unit gets older.
Nolonger a happy camper........2007-09-17
I have owned the Sony NV-U70 for one year. It took a bit to understand the touch screen interface. Todays problem. The new map update, (CD $99.00) for the US, is supposed to be available in October 2007. However, the new entire US map will not fit the unit, not enough memory space. So, if you are jumping on an airplane you have to upload a particular map for that area. When you return home you have to reload your home area. In addition, the CD software does not work with Windows Vista. (www.sony.com/nav-u/support) Map uploads take more than 1 hour.
Sony, I don't travel to Europe. I don't need MP3. I don't need every pizza shop, nail shop, hair dresser, burger joint. I need roads and direction. Maybe the new CD could have criteria/choices about what's on/in a map. The entire US in one map is valuable.
don't waste your money.......2007-07-21
I am very disappointed with my unit, you can't get any software to update the unit. it tells you to go to the sony website and it's not even available. I tested the unit on my drive home, I took my regular route, the unit told me to go in a different direction, it was opposite way and about 2 miles out of my way. I going to buy a Magellan
Not bad --- if they would just update their maps!.......2007-07-16
I have had this GPS for two years. All-in-all it has been quite functional. The interface was difficult to get used to, but after a while I got the hang of it and it works pretty well. It is fast and accurate, and thought it does only a few things, it does them pretty well.
My main complaint has been with SONY and its support. Just try finding information on their website! I tried calling and was told that a map update would be available in June 2007. Well it is now late July, and still can't find the update -- and they no longer answer the helpline phone number.
Because of lots of new roads and construction in my area I need the new maps. I finally decided to retire my Sony and just go with a Magellan or Garmin since they do so much better at updating and servicing their products.
I'm not so sure SONY is fully committed to their portable GPS product! Until they are, I recommend that you go with a company that is.
