Cool slim phone..........2007-12-30
I wanted this one so bad when I saw one and my old (2 yrs old) Panasonic started going bad (buttons), so I got one.
Nice & cool looks.
Ok reception, works fine in the house, but quality of a sound is not as great as in my Panasonic 5.8.
Sits on the desk by my computer and if I have it charging next to my speakers I can hear interference in the computer speakers (low "humming". Also when call is coming in and handset is near speakers, it sends a buzzing sound tot he computer speakers. None of any other phones I had before did that (900, 2.8 or 5.8), just my Nokia cell.
I give it a "3" overall because of a very nice looking design.
great home phone, but display broke in a few months use.......2007-12-29
I liked this phone for it's size and that it works great without reception problems. The speakerphone is good also.
The problem I have with this phone is that after a few months use the display text became too dim to read. Now I have no caller ID or the ability to access the stored phone numbers. The warrantee requires the phone to be sent to factory and wait 4-6 weeks for return.
All style, no substance.......2007-11-13
I purchased this phone for two reasons: 1) the claim that it is interference free and 2) for it's beautiful design. When it arrived to my office, I immediately plugged it in to charge it so it would be ready to use when I got home. Once home, I plugged it in and it looked great in my living room. I then took it off its cradle and tried to make my first phone call. There was so much static that I could barely hear the dial tone even while standing right next to the base station. Because this is a DECT phone, there wasn't a way to switch channels as in other cordless phones. I tried relocating the base station to the opposite side of the house and encountered the same problem. I've since returned the phone.
Slim but effective.......2007-10-12
Have had this phone for a few months with 2 extra extensions. Like the slim design and "cool" blue light. Best feature for me is the speaker-phone which plays quite loudly and can be heard by the rest of the family w/o trouble. I also like the fact that you can assign the ringer to other family members...when the wife calls me it is the "William Tell Overture". I come in with Bach's "toccata and fugue in d". In silent mode, the phone lights up in blue only...nice in the home theater room so as not to be disruptive. All in all, sound quality is fair-good and the units diminuative size is nice...just be careful not to sit on it if left on the couch!
fashionably slim; some flaws.......2007-05-26
This phone is (for now) one of the most slender home cordless phones available. The description above measures the whole system -- the handset itself is only 5 5/8" tall, 1 11/16" wide, and... only 9/16" thick! Compared with a Panasonic handset, that's half as thick, and 3/4 as tall, or less. But you pay for compactness with less range and shorter talk times: The battery is much smaller -- this one uses a slim cell phone battery rather than the usual 3xAAA size -- and its internal antenna(s?) are less effective. Obviously you can't cradle it on your shoulder like a Panasonic, but it fits in your shirt pocket!
Because I think of this as a "fashion phone," let's compare it to the (admittedly more expensive) VTech i5871/i5808 (5.8GHz) system rather than to the Panasonic KX-TG1032(3,4)/KX-TGA101 (DECT=1.9GHz) combo. Compared to the VTech, it lacks a color display, downloadable pictures & rings, has only 12 minutes answering machine storage, and is missing a few other features. But those are minor; in core phone bugs, the GE unit has lower volume overall, has touch-tones of clipped duration (forced to be short rather than as long as the button press, which makes some menu systems tough to use), and often causes sounds to "ramp up" in volume. It's not as bad as the muting on an old half-duplex speaker phone, but still an annoying "initial attack mute". Unlike the VTech and some but not all Panasonic, the answering system base does not have a battery slot -- so the phone won't work during a power failure, unless you have a UPS. One minor difference you might like (or not) is that the "Toll Saver" answering machine feature triggers on 3 rings & 5 rings, unlike the more typical 2 & 4.
Because of its flaws, I didn't buy extra handsets, so I cannot comment on multi-handset usage. Supposedly, with multiple handsets, it does have one feature the VTech lacks, namely "baby monitor" (eavesdropping). I put this GE in the guest room, where it'll look nice and be used only occasionally, and kept the VTech handsets for the rest of the house. To gauge my pickiness in this review, it may help you to know that I will *only* use a corded Nortel 9417 2-line for my work: its fidelity, ease of use, and sturdiness rule. Ah, if only I were willing to spring for the $1200 Bang & Olufsen 2-line fashion phones...

cheap, poor quality phone.......2007-12-22
In the past I have used nicer Uniden and Vtech phone models, and got used to their good looks and quality functions. The last phone I had was a Vtech 5.8 (the chic long thin model with the color display) but it started dying on me after a year. So I decided to take a gamble with GE, a brand I've never tried, primarily because it looked cool. I got the base unit and then one expandable unit.
The phone worked OK for a while (about a month and a half). Even when it was working optimally, it was just OK, a step down in quality from the others I'd had. I like the buttons, which have an unusual rubbery surface, and the look is extremely thin and sleek, if not a bit light and flimsy feeling. But the voice quality is poor, as is the speakerphone. The speakerphone was extremely quiet, and the speaker is on the back of the phone. Thus if you are trying to type on the computer as you listen to the speaker, you will have to flip the phone on its front to hear anything--which is kind of awkward since the mic is on the front. The phone ring options were limited. Screen display is simple - it's fine, nothing special. There are certain options it doesn't have, which are kind of annoying because I was used to having them on the higher end phones -- ie. when a call comes in and you want to ignore it, there is no button to press on the handset to silence the ringer. You just have to listen to it keep on ringing.
A month or so into having the phone, the reception suddenly tanked. Although I could hear everything the other side was saying, people suddenly had trouble hearing me, getting "dropped" portions of the call almost every few seconds -- as frustrating as a cell phone in a bad reception area. I bought another DECT 6 phone, though, and it's having the same problems, so it might be the DECT 6 frequency. I'm going to go back to 5.8 and see how that works.
But either way, this phone is not thrilling and you will be slightly disappointed in its quality if you're used to nicer cordless phones. Get this if are ok with something REALLY bare bones and basic.
Ultra Slim GE DECT 6.0.......2007-11-26
I like the expandable to 6 and the very slim features. The negatives are related, somewhat. The ear volume and ringer should both be capable of being louder.
HORRIBLE!.......2007-11-15
I needed to replace my old Panasonic 5.8 GHz system due to battery issues with the 3 handsets. My requirements were pretty simple, I needed an answering machine and 3 cordless handsets to use throughout the house. I also wanted the latest technology, cool looks and solid performance. Price was not an obstacle.
I chose this GE Ultra Slim DECT 6.0 system. I purchased the base station and 2 add-on handsets. It's Ultra Slim design was definitely an eye catcher, and is one of the best looking phone systems I have seen. I REALLY wanted to like this phone. Unfortunately the phone did not perform in the most basic of its functions . . . as a PHONE! While in my Office near the base station calls were clear and uninterrupted. As soon as I left that room and wander throughout the house, the handset first became static filled, then eventually began frequently dropping portions of the conversation, rendering it almost completely useless as a cordless phone.
I returned this design and replaced it with another GE DECT 6.0 system, and experienced the exact same problems! I was leary of the DECT 6.0 technology, but decided to give the Vtech DECT 6.0 system a try (looks just as good as the GE Ultra Slim), and it performs tremendously well - better even than the Panasonic 5.8 GHz system it replaced.
CONCLUSION - Vtech DECT 6.0 works well, GE DECT 6.0 system did not in my home.
Decent phone that works.......2007-07-11
QUICK SUMMARY: My 2.4 AT&T branded was starting to drop connections to the base station. Suspecting that the 2.4GHz frequencies were overcrowded I was looking at the DECT (1.9Ghz) phones as a possible upgrade. CallerID is very important to me, as I screen alot. So a full display is critical. The GE does this nicely, with the number and CID info fully displayed. No "scrolling" displays like in other phones. There is a VIP function, so you can assign a "known" CID to an alternate ring. The only feature that I miss from the AT&T is the voice announce of the incoming CID. The answering machine is basic enough for me and is available from the phone or the base station. Visually nice to display with a minimalist design and not bulky like the other units. Voice quality was good on the phone and the speakerphone on the phone was loud enough to hear it easily a few feet away. The base unit always displays the blue "charge" light when phone is in cradle. The base unit can tell when another phone in the house is using the line and will display an "In Use" light. I plan on getting the extension unit when they become available in August'07 so I can use the baby monitor option.
PROS: Attractive slim design. CallerID display is complete and accurate. Good/Average voice quality. No noise or dropped connections. Easy to use.
CONS: Too slim if you are using phone for long periods. Speakerphone is adequate but "volume attack" is noticable at times. No speakerphone on base only on phone.
