5 out of 5 stars Very Good feminine look player.......2007-05-16

this is a very nice mp3 player with a feminine touch. it plays mp3s in a very nice sound quality. it has what it takes to be one of the best gifts for your gf. nice look, great color, innovative display, compact size.
supports playlists, album, genre .... etc.
some times it does not recognise some mp3 files. if you faced this problem, simply, convert it to WMA with any conversion tool and back to mp3 with no loss in quality and you are done.
I recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little player.......2007-03-06

I purchsed this item after having owned the Sony Psych 512 mb player. I recieved the player three days after ordering (kudos to Amazon on again providing great service). I already had Sonic Stage 3.0 installed on my computer and upgraded to the 4.0 version included with the player, which was a breeze. Sony estimated a 20-30 minute load time but I had it loaded and running in less than 10. I have read numerous reviews that Sonic Stage is horrible software and impossible to use. I have had no problems with it other than a download problem with two songs which later was found to be a problem on Sony's end and they promptly credited my account for the error. The player itself is pretty cool in design; I especially like the display screen. It allows you to download your own playlists directly from Sonic Stage, or you can build your own directly on the player. It holds a fair amount of songs (5000+) and the sound quality is everything that you'd expect from Sony. The menus are easy to navigate through and the player is small enough to fit in a pocket and is not any heavier than a cell phone. It's a solidly made device. There are accessories out there to go with it such as speakers and FM transmitters; not as many as I-pod, but enough to have a nice little set-up. For those of you who want a device that is not overly complicated, with solid hardware, you could do worse.

1 out of 5 stars ...a technological NIGHTMARE! updates, firmwares, more firmwares, more updates, fixes... Ugh!!!.......2006-12-03

I bought this for my brother and thought "well... let me try it and maybe I'll buy one for me too".

Big mistake!

I popped the CD into my computer and made all the installation of the CONNECT software (the software you use to load this unit with mp3 files). Tried to use it and nothing. Strange messages kept on appearing saying there was a failure of some of the software's elements...

I tried the product support link on the same installation CD and got appaled when I discovered an incredible array of additional fixes, firmwares and other technological mistakes I was supposed to download and instal.

There was even an alternate software for those who thought the previous journey was too complicated (how sweet!!!).

I tried that one too and it still does not work on my computer.

I'll be returning the unit and getting something that actually works.

I'll forget this ever happened!

...By the way, this player player comes with two demo songs (the only songs I succeeded on playing). They sounded great. This player has great sound... but I don'r see any point having it if the software it uses is so bad.

Many of the same advanced features that enhance shortwave broadcasts do the same for AM reception as well. Listen to distant AM stations at night without fading.

Amazon.com Product Description

Take one look at the Grundig Satellit 800 AM/FM shortwave radio and you'll know it means serious business. From the easy-to-read liquid crystal display and traditional analog signal strength meter, to the silky-smooth tuning knob that creates absolutely no audio muting, this radio defines shortwave at its best. Continuous frequency coverage of 100-30,000 KHz gives you broadcasts from every corner of the globe. Even listen to ham radio operators, or planes as they take off and land at your local airport.

Design and Controls
Weighing in at a hair over 14 pounds, the Satellit 800's sleek, modern cabinet is 20.5 inches across and eight inches deep. The sturdy cabinet has metal guards, much like a rack-mounted component. A built-in antenna on the top of the device handles AM, FM and shortwave reception. To the right of the full-range speaker on the front of the unit, a massive 6 x 3.5-inch multifunction LCD panel displays all the radio's functions and tuning parameters. The display offers up to 100 Hertz accuracy on the AM, SW and VHF aircraft bands. An evenly lit backlight enables display viewing under all lighting conditions. To the left of the screen is an analog signal strength meter that helps achieve perfect tuning accuracy. A keypad below the LCD screen allows illustrious shortwave listeners to directly enter their shortwave band of choice, giving instant access to known broadcasts. Meanwhile, a selectable automatic gain control (AGC) offers fast and slow modes.

Tuning options abound; you can choose from a variable-rate tuning knob, the aforementioned direct keypad frequency entry method, up/down buttons, or programmable memory scan. And when you have your station locked in, you can tweak the sound quality with separate, continuous bass and treble tone controls. A bridged type audio amplifier provides high output power, even when the radio is operating on battery.

Tuning and Bands
The Satellit 800 is designed to receive a broad range of signals in the 100-30,000 KHz range, which includes shortwave, medium wave AM broadcast band and longwave. FM reception is robust, with tuning available in the 87-108 MHz ranges. VHF aircraft band reception is also supported. While you make your broadcast discoveries, you can add them to the Satellit 800's programmable memory, which features 70 frequency entries. As an added bonus, entries are immune to power loss, ensuring that your favorite tunings are never lost.

For tuning precision, the unit offers selectable bandwidths (7.0, 4.0, and 2.3 kHz) for excellent selectivity. And to top it all off, the Satellit 800's high dynamic range tuner allows for detection of weak signals in the presence of strong signals. And for those who enjoy tuning into far-flung AM stations, the Satellit 800 features a single sideband synchronous AM detector.

Connections and Power
The Satellit 800 is packed with connectivity options, including a stereo line-level output for recording or connecting the unit to a home stereo. There's also a stereo headphone jack for private listening (high quality headphones are included with the radio).

For the truly dedicated, the Satellit 800 offers vital external antenna connections. Take your pick -- professionally engineered shortwave antennae, long-wire shortwave antennae, specialized AM broadcast band antennae, FM broadcast band antennae, and air band antennae can all be connected. The unit can be powered with the included AC adapter, or via six "D" batteries. A low battery indicator is provided, as well.

Extras
Grundig thought of everything, so they've included dual programmable clocks. You also get a dual-event programmable timer that can be used for timing a recording or as an alarm clock.

What's in the Box
Satellit 800 radio, stereo headphones, AC adapter, and owner's manual.

5 out of 5 stars My wife Likes the buttons.......2006-03-16

I bought this radio for my wife when we moved. I figured she could tune into her favorite stations and it works.
The sound is great and the tuning ability is smooth.

It is big! That is okay.

5 out of 5 stars Best on the market.......2005-04-16

I have had several sw receivers over the years - currently have a Sony ICF-SW2010, Sony ICF-SW77, and this Grundig (second genereation). Side by side, the Grundig outperforms the two Sony radios by far. Tuning to Radio Serbia-Montenegro, the 2010 can barely pull it in even with an indoor antenna attached to it; the Grundig pulls it in clearly with just the whip. I was amazed. The added features on this recveiver greatly assist in locking down hard to hear signals and between the three, the Grundig is the easiest to operate.

I'm in the south (Alabama - no wisecracks!!) and have no problems pulling in BBC's European frequencies during the day (such as Europe today broadcast @16:00 UTC) and can get a decent signal from Croatian Radio at night. The big powerhouse stations (Deutsche Welle, R. Nederland) are easy targets, and instead of losing R. Australia around 14:00 UTC on the Sony, I can clearly hear it for several hours after the 2010 can no longer pick it up.

Drawbacks - the term "portable" is subjective - a concrete block is also portable but you would probably get tired of lugging that around too. But you can take it with you if you want; battery consumption is surprisingly good in this unit.

Overall - for an excellent, out of the box shortwave, this is the one to get. The Sony 2010 has been around for a long time and was considered to be one of the best receivers on the market - the Grundig wasn't around then but it is far superior to anything Sony has on the market. Non-portable, more expensive units hooked to outdoor antennas will perform better, but this radio will serve anyone very well at a fraction of the cost of Yaesu, et al.

5 out of 5 stars Great Value in a High-End Receiver.......2005-02-23

If you're after a high-end SW receiver but don't have the thousands for a Yamaha or Frog, this is a great alternative and an excellent value.

Reception will depend on your location and the external antenna you'll surely hook up. I've found with a Sloper I easily pick up high-band daytime from Africa, Australia, etc.

My only minor quibbles are--
(1) Volume knob will not turn the sound all the way down to mute (or even close). I want to turn the volume down sometimes.
(2) I've never been able to pick up longwave (though this may be my location or inexperience with this band).

In the era of i-Pods, PCs, and Tivo, shortwave listening is still a great hobby, and this is a great radio to do it with!

5 out of 5 stars A gift from the gods of geekdom.......2005-02-20

Before I say anything, premit me to state that the term "portable" here is used in a very general sense. Yes, it has a handle and you can pick it up and carry it, but it is a VERY LARGE radio! Not the type you'd carry with you for casual listening.

Now, with that out of the way, I cannot say anything but praise about this big, beefy piece of technology. It is very easy to operate (with 30 presets!) and has a built-in clock with 24 hour display. The sound quality is very deep and rich, not what I would normally expect from a shortwave radio.

The moment I had it out of the box, I turned it on and the preset frequency (5,000 kHz) brought in WWV so strong and clear, it was as if it was broadcasting from the other side of the wall.

Within minutes, I had Radio Habana Cuba, CBC, VOA and the BBC tuned in without difficulty.

In short, it's wonderful! And worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Nearly Perfect.......2005-02-11

What you have here is a general-coverage shortwave receiver that approaches, or perhaps equals, the performance of communications receivers costing twice as much or more.

The 800 meets the dictionary definition of portable, because it has built-in antennas and can run off its internal D-cells. But the truth is, it's luggage-sized. It's also hard on batteries. Feel free to lug it out to the back yard on a summer evening, but don't think you're going to be operating it like a real portable.

In fact, you might be cheating yourself if you did. It works well using its own built-in antennas. The fact that the FM-Shortwave telescoping whip is about the biggest, beefiest one I've seen no doubt helps here. AM performance on the internal antenna is, ehhh, OK I guess; not as good as the GE Superadio that costs a tenth as much. But this set is designed to be able to use, really use, a good external antenna. It really lights up when you do, on AM as well as on shortwave.

Sound quality is good, and there are jacks for an external speaker if you want to go really high fidelity. The controls are large and easy to operate. (With a radio this hyooooooge it would be a crime if they weren't!) It has three bandwidths. The filters seem well-chosen and act like they're good quality. The synchronous detection, which lets you lock in on one sideband or the other of a shortwave signal instead of the whole signal, is wonderful for avoiding interference from adjacent, strong signals; just pick the sideband away from the interfering signal and hear its interference drop away. Often right down to none.

I've had mine for a couple years now, I think, and if anything I like it better now than I did when I got it. I wish they'd decided to make it a bit smaller (and they could have, since the Drake SW-8 upon which the Satellit 800 was based appears to have been less than half as big). But that's not enough to make me lose any of my fondness for this fine radio.
