Great YP-T8X .......2007-08-19
Before I bought me a Zune player. I had this little player for like a year and half. Its a great player. Sometimes I still use it for voice recording for my exams in college. Since the zune does not have a voice recorder. I recommend this one.
Well suited as an audio book player, maybe more.......2007-04-07
If you would like to listen to electronic audio books in WMA format with DRM (digital rights management), this player might be just the ticket. I believe that IPOD cannot do this.
There are so many aspects to this player, I cannot give it a general rating that is fair. But, I have tested it for its utility as an electronic audio book player and found it to be the best among three older Samsung players I tested.
It has a bookmark facility as well as a hyper fast forward/rewind that will allow you to find your place in a 16 hour WMA file (~250 MB) within a minute (tested). You should not have to though, it auto-resumes just where you left off, and you can place a bookmark just to be sure. Takes a little learning curve though along with putting up with boot-up time.
Note that it is NOT very well suited to playing back audio books ripped from multiple CD's. It does not recognize folders as playlist items, a big drawback if it is used as a CD audio book player or a music CD player. It only understands individual tracks, but it handles very long WMA tracks very well.
I cannot even touch on all the features and shortcomings of this device... but it is well worth owning just to play with it. A perfect starter because its limited memory capacity has driven the price down. You will find excellent bang for the buck, as it is a slick and capable device, until you want more memory.
I have done only limited testing using it for photo, video, music, and recording. Feelings are mixed so far, but would give it a 3/5 at the moment. As a player for for downloadable eAudioBooks from Net Library, it is at max a 4 given the BEWARE notice below.
P.S. No longer available new, be sure your used unit has a wall charger and USB cable included. Software easily downloadable from Samsung but is not needed unless you want to transfer video (why bother?). Works as a simple flash drive unless WMA DRM is used... It worked with Windows Media Player 9 for downloading WMA DRM.
BEWARE: Battery is built-in and may not be user replacable. An automatic 1 point off the rating.
Good device! .......2007-04-03
I have been using that mp3 player for 5 months, and I love it so much. It looks neat and the sound quality is very awesome. The only thing that bugs me is that it does not have a search option to search for the songs. You have to go through 100 songs to to find a specific song that you want to listen. Other than that, it is pretty cool.
Netlibrary Friendly!.......2006-12-26
This mp3 player does work with Netlibrary/recorded books. I purchased for Christmas, and I am pleasantly pleased over my Sandisk sdmx1 which played fine, but could only pause and play again. This one has bookmarks and the ability to skip 10 minutes at a time to find the right spot. Also has ability to play videos, pictures, read text documents, record and listen to FM radio.
Take a hike ipod... this one rules.
Ebayed for $26!!!!!
It's a great little player.......2006-12-11
This mp3 player is great for someone who likes music nad wants to be able to take it with you where ever. There is not alot of memory. ionly holds about 115 songs. The software messed up my computer so i could not get any videos or photos on it. Next the screen gets dust under it that you cant get out. It is just a great little player.

Amazon.com Product Description
The Sony ICF-SW40 World Band receiver radio lets you listen to a wide range of frequencies at home and abroad, including long wave and short wave frequencies up to 26,100 kHz. The world time travel clock radio with digital synthesized tuner lets you listen to a drift-free range of stereo radio stations, choosing from a wide variety of radio talk and music programming. Small and compact in design and weighing less than a pound, the Sony World Band radio easily packs into your luggage or carryon bag.
The Sony World Band radio offers a wide range of listening options including long wave frequencies below the conventional AM band and short wave frequencies up to 26,100 kHz. You select the frequencies with a dial located on the side of the radio, which combines the style of traditional analog tuning with the accuracy of a synthesized tuner. One-kHz step tuning permits clear station reception, adjustable at 1 kHz intervals. Plus, you can quickly and easily return to your favorite stations with one of 20 presets you have saved in memory.
Among other benefits offered by the Sony World Band is a dual standby function which lets you set the built-in alarm to sound at two different times or wake you to two different radio stations. The LCD display shows either the time or the tuned-in station. It comes with antenna systems for LW/AM (built-in ferrite bar antenna) and SW/FM (telescoping antenna) and runs on three AA batteries.

Not for use in U.S.A. apparently.......2007-02-06
Bought for a birthday gift, this radio has been relegated to storage. The literature packaged with the "short-wave radio" has information for use in almost every country on the globe except the U.S. Too expensive for use as an AM/FM radio, we already have several of those. Unless the manufacturers can come up with specific instructions for use in the "lower 48" I would not recommend this item.
Horrible Radio.......2004-06-10
It has absolutely no front end filters. All the noise existing around penetrates it. In the result, it receives noise, not signal. Strong chugging when you try to scan with the side tuning wheel.
Strangely enough, Sony takes off production decent world band models, but keeps making this kind of overpriced trash.
It would be a barely acceptable value at $30-$40, not at its current price. Buy instead incomparably better radios from Degen/Kaito, models 1102 and 1103. 1103 has an electronic needle scale blowing away that of SW40, and it is a competently engineered and very well finished radio. Its tuning works almost as smooth as that of an analog receiver. It also costs less than a half of SW40.
Odd entry from Sony ...Not bad, nice tuner.......2003-11-04
Hello folks , its Vince the radioman . I have been a collector and buff for many years and I love to do compares . This is an odd radio . Its digital with an analog feel , not really . It has a very strange display window that is supposed to act like an analog dial . I find all the window data very hard to read. The radio's good points are that it is light weight and the Sony tuner is always the best part of the Sony radio product . The sound quality is only fair both from the built in speaker and the phones. There is no external antenna jack , for this price there should have been one. I find the controls a little overly sensative and the radio seems to have a mind of its own ( changes stations sometimes at will)....but , I will say again the tuner is very good . Buy it if you get a sale only!
Very happy with this radio.......2000-04-14
All I wanted was a radio with good reception, no need for headphones, and preset channels so that I could listen to NPR and the Red Sox game at work. To my surprise, this was pretty difficult to find - it seemed that there was no happy medium between the lower end clock radio / walkmans and the mini boomboxes with CD players, tape recorders, etc attached to them. All I wanted was a radio that acted as nothing but a radio, but did it well.
Finally I found this item - exactly what I had in mind. I'm very happy with this product. I just wished that it had come with an AC adaptor included, instead of having to buy it separately.
Good receiver, easy to use........2000-04-04
I've been using this receiver for a week and i find it very easy to use. I like the combination of the tuning knob and the digital readout. It's useful to have two standby modes, too. The reception is quite good for a radio this size and price. If you will be using it with an AC Adapter try to find the recommended one, otherwise you might have some noise in some frecuencies. Even if you didn't see it in the specifications in the web page, it also has a connection for headphones. Very good choice.
