RIO Carbon Volume Knob Keep Breaking.......2007-09-01
I bought a 5 GB RIO Carbon about 2 years ago. After one year the volume knob broke, so I returned it, paid $100 and got a replacement. About 2 months later the replacement died, so I paid another $100 and got another replacement. Now the third replacement volume knob broke (without any dropping etc.) I wish I never bought a RIO. It has a serious design flaw. Buy an MP3 player with no moving parts. I should have bought an Ipod, as I have now spent far too much money continuously repairing/replacing my RIO. Also not there is no shuffle mode on it either which would have been a nice feature.
Save your money. Buy something else-Any Thing!.......2007-08-11
** Your review of "Rio Carbon 5 GB MP3 Player" **
Sure its cute and fun for the first few hours as stated by other
reviewers. But then there are the problems:
(1) The all important volume control/scroll wheel breaks off if
handled too roughly leaving you with no other means to control the
volume - annoying beyond belief. Given that this wheel also doubles
as a menu selection device/mice you are not going to be able to
change the settings that easily either.
(2) For reasons yet to be discovered, the device goes into an
upgrader mode. Meaning - it displays the message "upgrader" - its
expecting you to upgrade the firmware. But your computer can no
longer recognize it - hence, no upgrade possible and you cannot exit
this mode = IT DOES NOT WORK. You can't even look at the time at
this point.
(3) Tech support from Rio - ELUSIVE/HARD TO REACH. I don't think
they exist.
(4) Warranty - 90 days after which everything seems to fall apart.
800 number? Forget about it.
Save your money and invest in a more durable device, this thing is
NOT worth it. I became so frustrated with it that I dumped it into
the garbage. I will never buy another MP3 Player from Rio again/EVER!

Clueless mom scores big!.......2007-05-12
[...] I ordered this as a Christmas present for my (then) 13 year old son who longed for "the competition" version of MP3. The Rio Carbon 5GB was too much memory for the $$ to pass up. Although it's quite a bit larger in size, it's design is sleek, very "industrial" and my son LOVED it. Still uses it DAILY and it's been 2 Christmases ago!
Felt secure in the reviews, felt secure w/ the guarantee and the company rating.

Non existent customer service.......2007-04-23
I purchased a rio carbon player; after an hour of use it went completely dead. I faxed the proof of purchase twice within the warranty period with the understanding that they would respond by phone within four hours. That was several weeks ago, they never contacted me. Now my unit is out of warranty, doesn't turn on, and I can't get in touch with Rio. They have no customer service via email or phone. Very poor indeed.

This is a great MP3 player. I love that it is so small and simple. I wish that they were more readily availiable. I also love that it is rechargeable and I'm not running through batteries like crazy.

The rio carbon isn't the greatest mp3 player ive ever had but it does have a very large storage
Other than the large storage it has really bad battery it doesnt last very long
Along with the bad battery comes a few skips once and a while does anyone know why it skips its an mp3 player not a diskman it should not skip
The rio carbon also has no waranty after 30 days

I bought this back in December so I've had a few months' use to reflect on.
This has been a solid buy and I was super-wary given that it's refurbished but it's performed very well - but not perfectly. First, however, the good:
1. Napster compatible. If you subscribe to Napster or Yahoo subscription services, this player works with them both.
2. Longish battery life. I find the battery indicator to be a little misleading - it never looks to be fully charged even when it is. That said, it goes a long time between charges.
3. Great sound. Let's not forget about that.
And here's the bad and indifferent:
1. Not so much with the multitasking. Once you've transferred music over to the Rio, don't do anything until the Rio's done finalizing or the player seems to go TILT and crash. It's like it can only handle one process at once. Not a big problem, just a minor, occasionally annoying wrinkle.
2. Rio software is a mess. Don't use it. You don't have to with all the other stuff out there (I've used Napster or simply transferred files through Windows file manager). Easy.
3. It isn't an iPod. Meaning, the battery life is strong, you can use Napster, you're not one of the herd, etc. But the user interface isn't nearly as sublime as iPod's.
Overall, I give it a very strong thumbs up. For the price, the size and the flexibility.

I love my Rio Carbon! It does everything I need it to - you can choose to listen by album, artist, year, etc and it will even shuffle according to album, artist, year or your entire library. The Pearl comes with a case that is a lot nicer than what comes with the other Carbons. The battery life is great and the software it comes with couldn't be easier. I like the Carbon way better than iPod because I don't have to convert my music to iTunes to get it on the device (not to mention it is a lot cheaper!). You really don't even need the software it comes with at all - drag and drop works just fine. The menus are easy to navigate and all the buttons are intuitively placed. There is also a lock feature which you can turn on to make sure you don't accidentally press any buttons. I don't have a CD player in my car, but my Carbon does the job just fine - I just plug in the tape adapter and it's all set to go. I guess the only bad thing about it is that there aren't many cool accessories for it - no stereo adaptors or anything fancy like that, but maybe eventually they will come up with some - I mean, they've got to keep up with the Jones', ya know? Again, I love my Carbon and definitely prefer it to iPod. The Rio Carbon rocks! (or countries, or hip-hops, or classicals, or whatever!)
