I've had this since it was first released and have found it to be a superb scanner.
As someone else has pointed out, there are occasional issues with slides, but from my experience that is a glitch in the NikonScan software and not the scanner itself. Using other scanning software (eg. Vuescan or Silverfast) has solved those issues for me.

Originally, I had very negative things to say about this product--namely problems with scanning chrome. Well, it took a couple of attempts over the past three years, but Nikon's support crew did a fantastic job once I convinced them of the problem, and they absorbed the entire cost of the repair (which was almost half the cost of the scanner).
In other words, Nikon stands behind its products. And you can't beat that. Buy it.
The best way to go for scanning negatives.......2003-11-05
The Coolscan IV is definitely worth the price for scanning negatives. I looked at flatbed scanners and cheaper film scanners previously, but in the end I bit the bullet and bought the Coolscan. I have no regrets about doing this. The resolution of the scanned negatives is amazing - I can see details that were not visible the original prints. What really makes the investment worthwhile is the Digital ICE technology, which "cleans up" dusty or imperfect negatives. I am in the process of converting my entire film library into digital images.
This brings me to the downsides of the scanner. It does not utilize USB 2.0, and the process of scanning negatives at high resolutions is very very slow. I basically have to devote 45 minutes to an hour to scan in a roll of film because I have turned on Digital ICE as well as the other touch-up features available on the scanner. However, this is by choice, so for people who don't want the highest resolutions, the process may be somewhat faster. The other problem is that the included software is very powerful but has a steep learning curve. I spent a lot of initial time tweaking the settings to find what produced the best images.
Overall, though, the gripes are minor since the quality of the images is so high. This has changed how I take pictures now. Since the resolution of the digital images is higher than any reasonably priced digital camera on the market, I am now shooting most pictures with a film camera and scanning the negatives. This provides the best of both worlds - a set of cheap prints as well as high-quality digital images. Now I just need to get another hard drive to hold all the images that I am scanning in...
wonderful scanner.......2003-07-07
I can't really add much to the reviews below, except to confirm what they all say. The money I spent on this scanner was very well spent. I'm having a great time going through my archives, scanning images, sending them to friends, printing them out for my walls and for gifts. I also highly recommend the Canon photo printers. Results are fantastic. Thank you Nikon, thank you Macintosh, thank you Adobe Photoshop. Canon, too.
It works with XP.......2003-05-18
It comes with XP software and manual contrary to specs on Amazon Web site. It works wonderfully - installs wonderfully and produces great scans. Thanks Nikon and Amazon.

I bought this DVD player three years ago and use it almost everyday and it still works well. My kids have spilled drinks on the player part so the buttons stopped working, but I can still operate it with the remote. My kids have even walked and kneeled on the player and it still works.
WASTE OF MONEY!!!.......2007-10-03
This product didn't last very long for the money we spent on it two years ago ($250). Within the 90 day warranty period, one screen failed to work. I determined that the problem is with the #2 input on the DVD player - it's not the cords or the monitors, but the DVD player. For the kind of money we spent on this thing, I would expect better performance. When buying a portable DVD player, buy a service protection plan. From what I'm reading on them, most of them seem to die within a few months of purchase (generally after the not-so-generous 90 day warranty period. Go figure.)
Only lasted 18 months.......2007-07-14
I bought this in December of 2005, and it broke last month. I took great care with it: it was only in the car for trips, stored in the included case, kept in the house when it wasn't in use, etc.
However, it broke last month. The dvd player itself still works if you connect it to a regular TV, but neither LCD display works at all.
Even when it did work, it skipped a lot in the car, no matter where it was positioned or how much padding was under it. It worked best when riding down very smooth highways. Otherwise, it skipped quite a bit.
I'm very disappointed in the quality of this device, given that I paid $280 for it at Target.

We purchased this DVD player in 2005 prior to traveling with grandchildren. We have been very pleased with the player and use it constantly. On long road trips or weekly 2hr commutes, this item has performed very well with much "kid and parent" abuse (dropping it, changing dvds, kid friendly buttons that are constantly pushed) Our family is the "test drive" for durability and this item is great. We love the dual screen and also does great for bunk bed viewing for sleepovers with friends and their favrite shows! It can also be assembled quickly in a moving vehicle!! We applaud the ease of this unit for the technologically challenged grandparents that we are!!
Disappointed for the price.......2007-06-24
I purchased this DVD player at Target. It has been used 2 or 3 times. The one monitor now has 2 big black spots in the screen and the cable for monitor one has to be wiggled in just right for the monitor to work. I payed a good chunk of money for a poor quality product.
