How NeatReciepts Works

Painfully slow.......2007-12-30

Pro: No more bags and boxes full of receipts.
Con: It's SLOW at everything, there is no batch processing, and it doesn't add any functionality to my bookkeeping other than tracking deductible sales tax.
I've been using the software and scanner for almost a year and my file size is up to about 350 meg. Nothing about it is quick. Starting up the program takes almost a minute. Backup or restore takes 20 minutes. Scanning accuracy improves with repetition but still must check every part of every entry to be sure it is correct. The OCR recognition time leaves me twidling my thumbs way too long. Full letter size receipts - cut out the irrelevant text with scissors if you don't want to wait forever. The Quicken interface is useless for me because I want to match scanned receipts to downloaded credit card statements and that just doesn't work. As for business card scan and export to Outlook, I can do it manually in 1/10th the time.
The search funtions are cumbersome and not at all like anything you might already be familiar with - but it's better than digging through piles of receipts.

Don't buy this.......2007-12-11

I was so impressed by the demo I saw at the airport kiosk that I could not wait to get back home to buy one of these gadgets. I ordered it from Amazon, and it arrived in record time. I set it up, loaded the software, then tried unsuccessfully to scan receipts and business cards. The paper got stuck, jammed, the computer froze up and the entire process stalled. I tried many times to get it to work. Reinstalled the software, set everything up just the way the instructions said - no luck. I even did a clean reinstall of my operating system, just in case I had a computer error. I am no computer novice, but this gadget just did not work. Amazon was gracious enough to accept a return and to refund my money. I am very grateful to them, and deeply disappointed in the Neatreceipt. What a time saver ot would be - if it only worked. Perhaps my machine was just a dud - and I hope that is true. But I just did not want to take another chance.

Fight The Good FightI had a huge box of receipts that I needed recorded. I purchased Neat Receipts and conveniently scanned them in very quickly.

Good, but does not support foreign currencies.......2007-11-18

When I first got it I loaded the software, and then tried the scanner. It did not work and I had got the receipt face down. I reloaded the software and downloaded the latest update and the scanner worked.

I found that it does not support foreign currencies and usually got the date and the amount wrong (the former was partly because my computer comes from Switzerland. And I was in the USA at the time so my receipts were all American.

What I did like was that I can scan all my receipts and export them as a pdf file which I can use to back up my expenses.

It also does not import pdf files so that if I save my internet receipt in pdf format, I cannot import it and I have to print it out and rescan it, which seems to defeat the purpose of the paperless office.

However, it also offers a business card scanner and it works as a general purpose scanner which is useful when I have to send an electronic scan back to the office.

For those based solely in the USA this should do the trick but for those travelling overseas you will still have to do the currency conversion at the next level.

Getting rid of paper receipts by scanning seemed like a sure win. The price of the scanner was fair - under $200, which would have been reasonable if it performed as advertised. I have other scanners (Fujitsui and Brother) which all scan at a reasonable clip, but the neatreceipts is SLOW, very slow and of marginal quality.

This device realistically takes 3-5 minutes PER receipt, often receipts need to be re-scanned, and the detection was sporadic. So you'd spend 15 min scanning three receipts from a Saturday morning - you could write down the details in an old-fashioned notebook or in an Excel spreadsheet in a few seconds! My first 3 receipts were essentialy unreadable (thought Dollar Store was Dominos & had wrong total, drycleaning receipt couldn't read at all & a clothing store receipt didn't read at all) the software couldn't identify total, name of vendor, etc., the forth receipt read crystal clear & read all of the information perfectly (albeit slowly). Re-scanning & re-typing in the totals, vendor, etc. I wondered why I wasted $ on this device - for its performance, I would have been much better off using a standard scanner, then typing in the info on an excel worksheet. The one receipt that did scan was cool, but a 75% failure rate is unacceptable. I'm going to try & return and wait for the next generation on this great but poorly executed idea.
