5 out of 5 stars Creative MuVo MP3 Player.......2007-01-12

Use this all the time for downloading and listening to books from the library. Great for work, listening out in the yard, on walks etc. Downloading is easy. Sometimes have difficulty getting it to start at the same place where I last left off, but in the end can get there.

4 out of 5 stars excellent and easy to use.......2006-11-10

Very happy with this product, battery life could improve.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money.......2006-11-08

I have owned a Creative Muvo TX FM 512MB for nearly 2 years. Bought it for $140 when it first came on the market and have no regrets since. Despite an increasing number of newer, prettier and gadget loaded players, I'm still happy with my Creative Muvo.

I'm not a technologically advanced person so it's simple layman experience here.

This small Zippo sized MP3 player is very easy to use. Just install the CD software included and you're all set. Open program. Plug player into USB port. Point, click and drag music files. Most of my music are MP3 or WMA format. I have had no problems with the Creative MediaSource software on my XP machine.

Sound quality is excellent. Choose from rock, jazz, classical or pop settings or customize your own EQ. I use it with my AKG K-26P headphones and the bass rocks. For classical music, the sound is clear and clean.

Design is business-like and functional. Extremely durable, thanks to the battery module (or battery case). I dropped it several times and it continued to work. One day, after a particularly bad fall, the battery case door finally broke and I simply ordered a new one for $10 from Creative. Replaced it and the player has worked perfectly since. I seriously doubt that the ultra cool and sleek IPod could have survived my abuse this well.

If I have any complaints, the AAA battery life is pretty average even on light use, lasting 3-4 days. I mainly use the player during work commute. I switched to Sony rechargeable batteries. While it did not lengthen battery life, the switch saved me a lot of money. Voice recorder is terribly muffled but this function is not an essential part of my MP3 player requirements.

If you are looking for a functional, easy to use MP3 player, at its current $60 price tag, the Creative Muvo TX FM 512MB is still one of the better players in the market.

1 out of 5 stars Maddening.......2006-09-07

At first I loved this thing, but if something goes wrong, good luck. Last night I hit the wrong thing and fast forwarded to the end of a program. I could never get back to that program and ended up totally lost and with my information upside down.

Looking at my laughable instruction booklet was no help. There is not even anything to tell me what the various icons mean. I went into the website and couldn't get it to take an email for support, so I called a 1-888 number and was told it was for sales. They then gave me a number for support that wasn't even toll free. I called it and was told there would be an unusually long wait.

Thanks for nothing Ceative.

If you are a technologically skilled person, you may love this thing, but if not -- forget it. You sure won't get any help from the company.

4 out of 5 stars Warranty Sucks.......2006-01-28

I liked the price. Good buy for the money. I called to get replacement because it kept turning off for no reason. Was told that I had to send $24.95 in order to get it repaired or replaced even though it was still covered under warranty. Maybe it's just me but, doesn't sound like much of a warranty. Check the replacement/repair warranty before you buy.

Amazon.com Product Description

Teaming high style with high sound, the Oregon Scientific HMS388 Music Element CD microsystem puts powerful CD playback at your fingertips. The system comes with a small-footprint CD player, two magnetically shielded satellite speakers, and a subwoofer--in short, everything you need to shake the walls with rich, expansive sound. The speakers' audio quality is further aided by NXT flat-panel technology powered by SurfaceSound, which lets you crank up the volume without losing sound quality. The speakers are slim, stylish, and well built (they're housed in solid aluminum), and give your living room or den a cutting-edge appeal, particularly when combined with the see-through, soft-loading CD player.

Music-wise, the system supports CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, and WMA playback, the latter two when burned onto a CD-R. Listeners will also delight in the seven equalizer effects--rock, jazz, concert, club, pop, classic, and dance--and the adjustable bass and treble controls. You can even individually adjust the left, right, and subwoofer channels to reach the best possible sound, a must for rooms with tricky acoustics.

Additional features include an AM/FM digital tuner with 40 presets, a bright vacuum fluorescent display with LED indicators, a built-in sleep timer, and an ultra-slim remote control with metal tablet buttons. And should you not have a good space for the speakers, don't fret, as the Music Element system comes with wall mount brackets. The microsystem's main unit measures 12.5 by 2 by 9.4 inches (W x H x D) while the speakers measure 3.8 by 12.8 by 1.4 inches each without the stands. The entire unit system is backed by a one-year warranty.

1 out of 5 stars Worst purchase I've made in years.......2006-12-18

I was seduced by the sleek appearance of this unit, which I bought for my bedroom. However, appearance is the ONLY thing this product has going for it. The flat-panel speaker sound is thin, reedy, and lacks any kind of "body", having absolutely no mid-range whatsoever, which the sub doesn't / can't compensate for. The sound quality was slightly better when I replaced the unit's speakers with a couple of Cambridge Soundworks satellite speakers I had lying around, so the flat-panels are now in a drawer. None of the predetermined equalizer settings provides the sound balance I like for classical music, and there is no way to create custom settings other than crude treble/ bass/ subwoofer adjustments (which also override the equalizer presets). I get much better sound quality with internet streaming audio and an $80 pair of Rogersound speakers!
Not only is the sound poor, but the design of the CD unit is worse than useless. The CD cover will open only if the CD is actually selected / playing, and there is no way to open it manually. The remote uses lithium batteries; what's wrong with AAA, which are a fraction of the cost? The LED display is on the top of the unit, so to use the remote (which is the only way to configure almost all of the system functions), you still have to stand right over the unit to see what you're doing. The remote is marked with minute symbols that I cannot even distinguish in low light.
I bought the system with some trepidation without being able to listen to it first. Had I been able to do so, there is absolutely NO WAY I would have bought it. An $80 Sony boombox I picked up subsequently produces much better sound, and is far easier to use.
Summary: poor design, poor execution, a very very bad buy!

4 out of 5 stars For the price - definitely worth it........2006-03-19

I have only had this unit for the past few days and have had nothing but an enjoyable listening experience. It has a very stylish, contemporary look and compact, which is important for someone who doesn't have the luxury of space. I find that with the subwoofer it gives a very clear, full sound; without this it sounds like a standard portable unit with too much treble, which is what you would expect. I have several micro units, two by Sony and they are great, but at the moment I am really impressed with this unit. It has it's little quirks, you have to really aim at the sensor for the remote control to respond, but it's little idiosyncrocies are something which you get used to and in no way detract from the over all experience. I think folk usually expect too much from micro systems when they really ought to be investing in separate pieces where they have full control over the power and individual products. I just wanted a micro system that had a bit more power than those I already owned, and this one delivered on that. As a bonus you get a great looking compact and stylish outfit too. Seeing that this is Oregon Scientific's first foray into micro hi-fi (I am aware that they do have an MP3 and Portable CD walkman) it's a nice start and I imagine that those to follow will only improve on the HMS388. Stop quibbling over minor issues and enjoy your music. Please remember - it is a MICRO system and is very good for what it is.

1 out of 5 stars Stereo crimes.......2006-03-04

This product should be pulled off the shelves imediately. The sound is like a cat in a vaccum cleaner in a garbage can. The three inch speaker on my alarm clock sounds a million times better, I cannot believe anyone would sell garbage this bad. I am beyond disappointed

1 out of 5 stars Style Without Substance.......2006-01-15

Got one of these as soon as they became availabe because of its minimalist look. Be warned - the sound quality from the Nxt flat speakers is poor; worse than most mediocre PC speakers.

Some other problems: the unit doesn't remember bass and treble settings when using the Auxiliary input (as when running an iPod through it), so you have to reset them every single time you turn the unit off and on. Also, if you use one of the equalizer presets, you can't go back and adjust bass and treble without turning the unit off and back on again.

The remote control has a nice feel, but it's difficult to see the labels on it as they are printed in tiny letters on some sort of plastic covering - on which there are already small cracks on the surface after a few days of normal usage. The buttons on the remote are hard to push and you'd better have some sharp fingernails if you want to use the tiny wheel in the center of it to adjust the sound settings or radio tuning for which there's an annoying delay of a second or so when you change radio stations via the remote.

I've gone through three different gauges of speaker cable trying to get some sound out of the RCA Sound Out jacks without being able to ever hear more than a whisper from any of three different sets of satellite speakers.

Thumbs down.

2 out of 5 stars cheap stuff..........2006-01-05

I would not recommend you buy it. My girlfriend wanted it because it looks nice on her black shelves but it sounds terrible, very metallic, and the whole thing seems a kid toy. The CD loading is slow. One speaker was so bad I thought it was broken. So I called Customer Service: got disconnected. I wrote an email: never got a reply. I am highly disatisfied by this product and the company.
