Dead in the first half hour of use.......2007-12-23
It's been a long time since I've had an brand new electronic product that died within the first half hour of use. I've always stayed away from low-end brands like Coby like the plague, but I started noticing nicer-looking products from Coby while cruising through stores like Walgreens and Target, so I decided finally to give Coby a chance when my wife needed a simple MP3 boombox (no CD) that has a flash card slot, to play tunes for our baby. And it just so turns out that Coby is one of very few brands that makes such a device (strange but true, as of Dec 2007). When it arrived, things were looking good. My wife liked its appearance, and it generally felt like a semi-quality piece. So I dropped several dozen songs onto an SD card and slipped it into the Coby's CD slot. I browsed through some of the settings in the menu, which were straightforward and effective, and setup the radio with my preferred presets. All of this took 10 minutes or so. Then...after playing 3 or 4 songs, it froze. None of the buttons worked. I unplugged the device from the power socket, replugged it in, the LCD came back on, but none of the buttons were responsive. I unplugged and replugged it in several more times. No luck. It won't turn on. None of the buttons work. I'm RMA'ing back to Amazon the very same day I got it. Thank goodness for Amazon's return policy. And...I will not touch Coby again.
Perfect for kids..........2007-11-16
After wearing out two CD players from playing lullabies continuously, this machine was a godsend, and has the capability of growing up with my little one. No moving parts, I can put the MP3s directly on an SD card or load them into the device's internal memory. When she's older it can be an alarm clock radio or she we grab it and take it with her on a trip to take familiar songs to any hotel room.
Perfect for our needs!
Just what I was looking for.......2007-09-08
I was looking for MP3 players for my 3 and 5 year olds. Wiggles and Disney CDs don't have a long lifespan with kids that age.
I wanted them to be fairly kid proof.. no docks, moving parts, headphones, etc.
These were exactly what I was looking for, and the price was right. The kids love them.
If I had to pick on a couple things... the LCD display could have better contrast, and they'd be much better with 512MB.
Pleasant Surprise!!!.......2007-08-26
With the low cost of this MP3 "Boombox" item through an alternate Amazon dealer, I was really expecting very little.......but out of the box it did more and easily then I ever expected. I am pretty MP3 savy and this was a mojo simple plug and play. You just drop the songs over the USB and it plays, no trouble at all. The 256 will hold at least a good 1 1/2 hour of play anyway but the best part is that it actually plays pretty dang loud. I was expecting a tiny tin sound but you can hear it playing three rooms away, no problem, no rattle. It has a fairly good base sound and if your files are simple medium bit downloads or rips, the sound is good. The FM radio has a pretty cheap reciever I guess but I didn't buy it for that. If you want something to haul around with you, this is prefect for size and with just 4 c's in it, not much wieght. I will update my review if this "thang" goes bad after a while.
Another false product information.......2007-08-10
Doesn't matter how good or how bad a product is, I will give it zero star when I am lied to: the 4xC batteries are NOT included, and the USB port is only 1.1, not "ultra fast 2.0" as indicated in the product information.
On top of that: the player does not resume where it left off on the SD card, the alarm function on my new unit does not work (set to FM).
The saving graces: AC adapter is included, funtions as a conventional alarm clock (that is if the alarm works) with radio(FM only)/stored music/buzz/snooze button, sleep timer, plays mp3, direct mp3 encoding, option to resume at beginning of track or at the exact point where left off, and very small internal memory (256mb, imagine if larger would wait forever for the usb 1.1 to transfer), the backlit light is bright orange is as good as a night light. But all the settings need to be done through navigating the menu, not convenient as a conventional alrm clock.
Oy vey. But FYI.

No satellite needed, no subscription required, thousands of stations available.......2007-12-05
This product worked faultlessly out of the box for me. We live in a radio shadow area where even a station 15 miles away can be difficult to receive using a classical aerial and we have no reception for digital at all. However we do have cable internet broadband and a local wireless network - with this radio we found that we can now get effectively faultless reception from an enormous range of stations which offer streaming internet. Our preference is for talk radio from the other side of the English Speaking world - completely problem free so far. Hear different points of view on international news, listen to "book at bedtime" from the BBC etc! ! Could try and learn a new language. No interference noted with our use of broadband with our laptops simultaneously. Much better than shortwave type approaches. Cannot comment on musical quality but essentially it is a mono speaker output by default. Somewhat expensive to buy but no continuing subscription costs, aerial etc needed.
I saw some cautions about upgrading the default station data base but have followed the Five Mile Island technical rule "do not fiddle unnecessarily with the controls" !.
Overall Strongly recommended.

A love-hate relationship.......2007-06-20
I am tempted to give this radio five stars, although a couple of months ago I would have given it zero stars if I could have. So, in retrospect it gets four stars. Let me first say I am NOT very computer literate. Programming isn't my thing. I just want to take something out of the box, plug it in, turn it on, and listen, changing stations occasionally. I'm stuck in the superhetrodyne radios of the '30's and '40's. It either plays or it doesn't when powered up. Mine didn't ---- at first.
I bought mine from C. Crane in So. California. They have a great warranty and the best support I could ask for. I took the unit out of the box, glanced at the instruction book for at least seven seconds, hooked the radio up, turned it on, and got absolutely nothing but a pretty blue digital readout and two blinding blue LED's. After reading the detailed manual and quick-start booklet I again tried to get the thing to work. No luck. I realized I was in over my head and carefully packed everything back the way it had been. I called the Crane Corp and the lady cheerfully gave me an authorization no. for a return. Shortly afterward a very courteous Crane tech rep (Isiah) called me up and asked if I would be willing to give it one more try with his help, to which I agreed.
I unpacked everything, hooked it up, and this angel of mercy led me through the entire process in no time. It worked perfectly and I felt like I had completed an engineering course. I'm right-brained analog, and left-brain digital stuff is a black art to me. The glorious classical and folk music originating from hundreds of stations all over the world made it all worthwhile. Two weeks later disaster struck. Nothing worked anymore. A call to Isiah at C. Crane cleared up the mystery. Seems that the factory in the U.K. decided to "improve" everything by installing new firmware (see, I know a new term) via the net, and didn't bother to tell their customers. Isiah again led me through the new firmware program update process. It was tedious but this time it went faster because I was beginning to get the hang of it.
Two weeks ago three twisters were on the ground locally at the same time and we lost power for several hours. Again I was faced with reprogramming everything. This time I decided to try it without help and got it done OK.
So here's the final summary. It probably WON'T work right out of the box as claimed, unless you don't count programming, which is simple enough after you learn how to do it. Buy from an authorized re-seller who is helpful and can can serve as a buffer between you and any crude factory techs who might be lacking in social graces.
When set up correctly the radio is astounding for offering world choices from 6,000 stations. The single little dinkey speaker sucks, no other way to put it. But my hearing is shot anyway from firing too many guns without ear protection, so it evens out for me. You might want to plug a high quality speaker system into the earphone jack. I am told the jack puts out in sterio.
Now that I know how to work the thing I wouldn't take for it, and will likely buy a second one. Don't expect Klippsch-horn or Bose sound, but this is one helluva little radio for its size and the stations it gives you access to. For that it deserves five stars.
Great Product.......2007-04-30
Worked right out of the box. The sound could be better but otherwise I am very satisfied.
Poor sensitivity. No support.......2007-01-24
This is a great idea, but a poor implementation. I loved shortwave radio as a kid and this is better. I received my unit in December, 2006, and it worked just fine out of the box, but only if I kept it in the same room as my Wi-Fi base station. When I moved it to my bedside, two rooms and three intervening walls away, it stopped. The signal strength indicator dropped to 0-1 bar. BUT--my Sony laptop resting next to it would pick up and stream flawlessly any radio station, showing 4-5 bars of signal strength. It's clear their Wi-Fi circuitry lacks sensitivity, at least compared to my Sony.
The seller replaced it with a new unit. It performed the same. An email to the manufacturer went unanswered.
WARNING TO BUYERS.......2007-01-02
The item does work out of the box as long as you do not try to upgrade the software. I tried and it crashed the entire system. It stops working and can not be fixed except to be sent back for a new one. Make sure to not disconnect the power or turn it off until it is done. How long does it take. I do not know. A call to the company in England was not helpful. They did not answer my e-mails so I called. They said that they were aware of the problem and suggested I return it to the seller for replacement. When I suggested that they send out a recall notice as the product has a major defect the last word from tech support was f**k you! The sound quality is not great for music. Acceptable for voice. I have a strong wi fi and quite a few stations did not come in well. Others that I normally get without a problem on my laptop were buffering in and out. Great idea but....... Very disabppointed.
Great Idea-No Support.......2006-11-25
I love the idea of this radio and when it works, it sounds great. However, it has been unstable from the beginning and the slow response from AE was to contact my local distributor in NY. My distributor does not answer emails and when they do answer the phone and take a message for someone to call me back, they never do. I think this radio must have a hardware issue as it crashes from time to time and requires a complete reset to get it going again. It's frustrating and time consuming. I can't reccomned this product. The Receiva site often has similar complaints for brief periods until they delete them. The logic behind this just escapes me. They are killing a great idea.
