Not bad, but a couple of minor quirks.......2007-12-08

This is a decent little player, with good sound, bookmarking support, excellent FM reception, etc, but it does a couple of things that annoy me. I bought it to listen to lengthy podcasts and audiobooks while moving around, but I'm not sure I'm all that much better off than I was with my old 512MB RCA Emusic1.

The Micro Photo is very ID3 centric, using the MP3 file's abritrarily defined tags to sort the files inside of the hierarchies by artist, album, and genre. I haven't found a way to also sort by directory structure, meaning that I have to explicitly create playlists containing everything but my podcasts when I want to listen to just music in shuffle mode. Not a huge problem, but it wouldn't be a problem at all if this were a simpler device.

More importantly, it lacks any sort of grip for a pendant, band, etc, meaning that the only way to carry this thing short of, well, carrying it or dropping it into your pocket is to buy a clunky silicon wrap to put around the entire device. That's not a huge problem for me, as I'm a guy who always buys big pocketed-pants, but it'd be a big problem for my wife and anyone that wants to use this device while wearing gym clothes.

Both of the above problems are also present in the iPod, but are absent in most bottom-rung flash devices that sort files by filename. If you're deciding between going low or going with a device like this, ask yourself:
Would you rather have to put up with this device trying to organize your files into a tiny little 8GB library based on their metadata, or would you rather put up with a bottom-end device that doesn't have support for bookmarking/file resumption?

This does exactly what I want it to do. It's nice to have a few pictures on it, but I didn't really care about that capability. However, it's a great MP3 player, has more than enough room for my music and audio books, I love the radio function, and the recorder is very, very useful to me as a college student. It may be bulkier than some of the others, but it also seems pretty solid and well built. I did by better headphones (I need really small earbuds) but I expected this. I really love this thing.

Enjoyed my MicroPhoto until it just froze. Even after several hard resets will not do anything. The freeze problem seems to be a known issue. But Creative wants $25 just to look at it even though it is still under year warranty. I called and the recording said that since I hadn't bought the extended warranty, I would have to pay to talk to someone.

I had a Creative Zen 5GB MP3 for over 3 years but dropped it one too many times, killing the hard drive. I did not hesitate to buy a second one.

Never really had any problems with either (I have had the new one for about
a month now). Seems to be fully Linux compatible (mp3's and pictures), just like my previous one.

Overall, perfect price and operation for what I need.

How I Learned To LOVE This SRF-M80V Walkman!!.......2007-11-28

I bought this SRF-M80V Walkman about 4 years ago from Radio Shack because I like the features. AM/FM/TV digital tuning, 20 preset stations.

The operation and unusual design of it took lots of getting used to, so I put it in a draw and forgot about it for 4 years. I have a collection of 4 other perfectly functioning Sony Walkmans to fall back on.

Then, in recent months I dug out this SRF-M80V from the draw. I learned to use it, got used to it, and now LOVE it the best of all of my Walkmans!

I've been using it every day for the past 2 months with no problems. No broken earphone jacks. I never even considered using the supplied headphones. (Supplied headphones are always "junk" and necessitate the need for better headphones, IMO.) Sometimes I may accidentally touch the volume control, but that's okay, I perfer a volume control that is easy to operate, and easy to turn down when necessary.

I am shocked to see that the price has tripled since I had bought mine! I'm also disappointed that Sony has discontinued this model. (I wanted to buy an additional one for someone.) It seems that the closest replacement model is the SRF-M85, but I like this one better!

I think it's important to point out that **effective February of 2009 when TV goes to strictly digital broadcasting and analog broadcasting will be discontinued, that the TV bands on this radio will no longer work.** (Let's not mistake "digital tuning" for "digital broadcasts")

I LOVE this Walkman for now, but considering the facts that TV sound will no longer be available on it, and the fact that the price has tripled, I believe that this Walkman is not worth it's current price. However, I'm confident that I will enjoy this Walkman at least until the Feb 2009 change. The FM and AM bands will not be effected.

Despite Flaws, I Have Few Complaints.......2007-07-24

Despite the low ratings that other reviewers have given the Sony SRF-M80V S2, I've been pretty pleased with mine. It's lasted a few years (like the other Sony Walkmen that I've had), and this one especially took some abuse mountainbiking and continues to work wonders. The arm band's nice, but I clip mine on my biking shirt or shorts and it holds on just fine.

Are there cons? Yes, but they're minor. The headphones were replaced on the first day (they're awkward), and the FM/TV/Weather reception could be better (I listen to AM only, and that's always been great). Also, the fact that the "hold" switch does not freeze the volume is somewhat troublesome--especially since the volume dial is right next to the clip, it can turn up loud without warning.

Overall, a great radio if you can find it on the cheap.

It Works Great For Me.......2007-06-26

I've had one of these for years. I use it every morning to listen to an NPR station that is about 50 miles away. Reception has been fine virtually everytime I've used it. TV feature was handy during Wilma when my electricity was out for a couple of days.

Decent...Needs Some Improvements.......2007-02-05

I like the channel preset buttons and the stop watch feature but...I do not like the volume control. It is very sensitive and easily moved if you put the radio in a pocket or attach to your belt. I can't tell you how many times I have blasted my eardrums or turned the volume off while running. Something also went bad with the left channel, it cuts in and out, which is very annoying. Overall it's not a bad radio...Reception and sound are pretty good. I would not buy again unless the volume control was improved.

Great Product.......2006-04-18

I find this to be quite a nice product. It appears kind of large at first glance, but sits securely on the arm and is light and not bothersome. Reception is very good and importantly for me, the volume is LOUD(nice when so many walkmans are quiet for safety?). The headphone connection is a bit crackly. I hope this radio last a while.
