Offering surprisingly good sound for its diminutive size, the SA10034 portable audio system from Delphi is a terrific way to enjoy your XM satellite radio subscription and MP3 CDs at home or on the go. The system, just 20 inches across, is easy to carry, easy to position, and hard to turn off, thanks to its impressive abilities and engaging performance. The boombox is designed for use with Delphi's SA10000 XM SKYFi radio receiver, but it will operate independently of the receiver for CD playback or analog FM/AM radio reception.
Delphi uses a clever pivoting center unit that houses an XM receiver dock on one side and a CD transport/analog tuner on the flip side--just spin it backward or pull it forward to enjoy your desired source. As an XM radio interface, the boombox is first-rate. The XM SKYFi receiver locks in securely and the boombox carry handle is flexible but durable.
We were impressed with the bass output from the system's small, relatively flat speakers, and midrange and treble frequencies sounded smoother and more balanced than expected. We listened with ease for hours at a stretch. The system seems to process stereo signals to make them wider and more spacious than they'd otherwise sound from speakers fixed less than 10 inches apart, but the effect is not unpleasant.
Crucially, the boombox--unlike the XM receiver itself--offers a headphone jack, letting you plug the system into an integrated amplifier or surround receiver for listening through your usual speakers. (A minijack-to-stereo-RCA "Y" adapter cable is not included.) Sound from the headphone jack is not processed for wide stereo. XM navigation, wholly the province of the SA10000 receiver, is terrific, and the remote control supplied with the boombox operates both the boombox and your XM receiver, so you don't need both remotes on hand.
The CD transport appears to have been cheaply integrated, resulting in audible electrical noise whenever a disc is spinning or skipping to a new track. Luckily, discs spin only part of the time--just long enough to load the music into a memory buffer. With MP3 CDs, the buffer will hold a song or more. With audio CDs, however, discs will spin for about a minute, rest for 20 seconds, then commence spinning. If you're listening at a loud level to music that is fairly loud itself, you probably won't notice the noise. But with close or quiet listening to jazz, classical, or folk, the sputtering can be bothersome.
The CD player's LCD shows the number of directories (folders) and the number of tracks on a disc at startup. The display does not permit macro folder/file navigation, so if you don't know the folder and track numbers for the file you want to hear, you'll have to browse by ear or by specific file name as you skip through the tracks (folder names are not displayed).
We experienced occasional audio glitches during MP3 CD playback, even during stable indoor use. Still, it's nice to have the ability to listen to or shuffle through an MP3 CD, especially on the go: just load 6 D batteries, dock an XM receiver, and bring the included XM antenna and a single multihour MP3 CD for fail-safe musical enjoyment.
The boombox's XM's satellite reception is great. Outdoors, maintain clear overhead visibility (don't expect pristine reception under a massive bridge, for instance). Every location will be different, but it's worth noting that, indoors, we encountered no XM radio dropouts or service interruptions during our review period, either with the recommended south-facing antenna position or from an east-facing position used for much of our listening. What Is XM Satellite Radio?
XM Satellite Radio was the first satellite radio service to be offered in the U.S. It features a state-of-the art Broadcast Center in Washington, DC, two Boeing 702 satellites (providing 18 kW of power--the most powerful commercial satellites ever built), and approximately 800 terrestrial repeaters located throughout the continental United States for seamless transmission. Service is not available in Hawaii or Alaska.
XM Satellite Radio offers 100-plus channels, including 70 music channels, over 35 of them commercial-free, and 31 news, sports, talk and children's channels, broadcast coast-to-coast in digital quality. Avoid like the plague.......2007-12-08
There's a reason the price is so low. The dealers can't give them away. Apparently, there's an engineering flaw and when you tun on the radio, you'll hear a put-put sound, like a motorboat. This can be drowned out by turning up the volume, but you really don;t want to do that.
Delphi, which is currently in bankruptcy, has virtually no technical support or customer service. When I returned the unit, I received exactly the same one back a few weeks later, untouched and still defective.

This is a nice little all-inclusive stereo since it plays my XM, CD's, AM/FM, and MP3's ... BUT ... at low volumes, you can hear this low-pitched vibrating/motor sound in the background that is very annoying! So it works great if you want your music loud, but if you want to have it low (as background music when you have people over, etc), skip past this one. The motor noise will drive you and your guests nuts!

Take look at the price. I bought this 'cause it was cheap.
The sound is very good. I have not noticed any hum or static. I must have gotten a good one because I have not had any problems with mine. I use it at work in the XM mode with my ROADY XT to listen to background music and talk radio. I do carry it back and forth from work fairly often.
There are detentes to store the antenna that works just fine.
With an inverter plugged into the cigar lighter, it gives me XM in my rental car across the deserts of Nevada when I travel.
I had trouble getting the adapter for Roady to slip-in the first time but Tech support talked me through it. Now just remove the receiver to install in my car instead of removing the adapter as the instructions say.
I have not used it with batteries though a friend said 2 hours was the usable listening time. The remote works for Roady features I use but it does not work for all the features available to the SkyFi.
I came to these reviews to see if "..rechargeable batteries charge in the unit while using AC power? But no one commented on that and I saw the bad reviews and just had to put in my 2 cents.

The Boombox itself is somewhat cumbersome, but for what I'm using it for it's just fine. Using my SkyFi II XM Receiver is easy and I'm extremely pleased. The directions for operating the AM/FM radio were confusing and in some cases wrong but I personally will rarely use that feature.

Ok, first you do have to have a room with a south exposure window to face toward the satellite needed. If you have that, then Voila, you have XM radio available in your home. I have my receiver unit folded flat stuck between my window and window screen. This unit is my favorite of the XM Radio units, as we can easily flip it over to play a CD, then flip it back for satellite radio and the buttons I can actually see. Buttons are big and easy to see for the post-40 bi-focal crowd, and the display reads bright and clearly the name of the artist and song. Other units have tiny buttons I could never operate. With XM, I've heard so many old songs that I never had known the artist name, and now I do. Great way to discover new music too. I'm getting ready to set up another high fidelity system using XM radio (with perhaps an Onkyo), and will move this unit from living room into kids' room. This was a Christmas present impulse buy for my husband. My husband absolutely loves Channel 43 (Indie station) and I love the XM Cafe (Channel 45) and Beyond Jazz Station (102). I also love getting news, TV (E!, Opra, CNN, Fox, etc), and local traffic/weather reports. There's also a dance station that my kids and our nanny love, and several French stations too. Got same unit installed in my car (had to get cigarette lighter power adapter for all the cords: cell phone, Garmin, and XM Radio plugged in all at once). TIVO and XM are life essentials! Ignore all the bad reviews, this unit is an incredible bargain! I'm a Carver, MacIntosh, Bang & Olufson & Klipsch stereophile with multiple 400cd Sony disk changers, but this cheap thing beats all for ease and fun factors. Just wish it was "high fidelity" but am working on that next.
