Amazon.com Product Description
Built for today's multimedia-savvy, always on-the-go computer user, the entertainment-centric HP Pavilion dv2615us notebook PC provides quick access to your digital audio and video library wherever you roam. Weighing in at 5.4 pounds, it travels easily and it provides a cool, modern look with a high-gloss durable finish and inlaid design inspired by Zen rock gardens as well as touch-sensitive media controls. Latch-free, the mechanical closure, unique speaker grill pattern, and color-saturated LED indicator lights further enhance this sophisticated design. It offers a widescreen, BrightView 14.1-inch display, which provides improved viewing in direct sunlight. Control settings for audio and video playback from up to 10 feet away with the included HP remote, then store it conveniently in the PC card slot. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process).
This notebook is powered by the 1.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. It includes Intel's 4965 AGN wireless LAN, which will connect to draft 802.11n routers and offers compatibility with 802.11a/b/g networks as well. Other features include a large 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD drive (which can also burn CDs), Intel GMA X3100 video card with up to 251 MB of shared video memory, Bluetooth connectivity, multi-format memory card reader, and integrated Webcam for easy video conferencing.
It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor has a 1.5 GHz processor speed, fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:
- Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
- Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
- Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
- Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB DDR2) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It provides two DIMM slots and has a 4 GB maximum RAM capacity. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
While this notebook is actually as wide as standard 15-inch displays, the high-definition, widescreen 14.1-inch display (1280 x 800-pixel resolution) has the same form factor as a 12-inch screen--taking up less space on your desk. Video is powered by the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which uses shared video memory (up to 251 MB allocated from the system memory) and provides Windows Vista Aero interface support and enhanced 3-D graphics performance--delivering over 2x scores on 3-DMark 06. Intel Clear Video Technology provides outstanding video playback with sharper image quality, increased clarity, and customizable color controls. It also enables enhanced visual quality of interlaced content on progressive displays.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated Intel Wireless Wi-Fi Link 4965 AGN LAN chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments).
With the Bluetooth connectivity, you can communicate and synchronize with Bluetooth-enabled peripherals such as PDAs and cell phones. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which includes both super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
- 1 VGA monitor port
- 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
- 1 ExpressCard/54 slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
- 2 headphone jacks
- 1 microphone jack
- 1 Expansion Port 3 connector (for use with the HP xb3000 Expansion Base or the HP Notebook QuickDock)
- 1 IR receiver
- 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect via Wi-Fi.
Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

Customer Reviews:
Looks nice. Terrible Terrible service.......2007-12-31
I started having scrambled video and lockups with this machine after 3 months. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GET MAIL IN SERVICE WITH THIS MACHINE. They sent it back the first time still broken and locking up. Now they keep delaying the return to me telling me that the part is on backorder. I have been without my laptop now for 1.5 months...Good thing I kept my old computer around as a back up.
This has been a complete nightmare. Whenever I call they transfer me between 4 different people and I have yet to hear from the case manager. This will be my last HP computer.
Decent Computer for the Price.......2007-12-28
Not a bad deal. Computer works quite fast. I like the memory card slots it has, as well as the built-in Bluetooth capability. I can connect to the Internet via Bluetooth thru my cellphone. Awesome. There's something wierd about the touchpad though. Quite often when I type, something gets activated and the curser just jumps to a different section of previously-written text and I start over-writing that I wrote. Very annoying. There's an on/off button above the touch pad to avoid this which is handy when writing a lot, but then you have to turn it back on again if you don't have a mouse attached. Battery life if short. It sucks it down! I like the AMD 64-bit processor. It least it won't be quite so obsolete so quickly when 64 bit programs are more widely available. Speakers sound crappy; Not nearly as good as my old Dell Inspiron. Computer is nice and light. I bought because I travel a lot. Built in memory is 2GB on two 1GB cards. Mem slots are full, so if you want to upgrade, you'll have to buy 2GB cards to make any headway. All in all, not bad for the price. Build quality seems good. Only drawback is the touch pad placement which interferes with typing and the tinny muffled speakers, even though they boast that they're "Altec Lansing". Yippe!
Nice design, performance, avg battery life........2007-12-24
Just got it from Amazon about a month and a half ago; haven't really crashed tested it yet, but I have a pretty good idea what to expect from this beauty.
Pros: Sleek design (good WOW factor); thin and light as advertised; good load of tech specs (USB's, HD, Ram, Lightscribe, bluetooth, wireless, webcam/mic, etc.); good performance (not one reboot or slowing down, even after upgrading to Vista Ultimate); nice screen definition.
Cons: IMHO, not long enough battery life; no fingerprint reader (becoming quite a standar nowadays); touchpad needs a little more precision.
All in all, great laptop both for work and entertainment; this is my first one with integrated webcam/mic, and that's a charm for skyping or IM. The screen resolution is fantastic, and performance has been above average. I use the Office 2007 package, Project, Visio stuff, not much of graphics editing. In other words, business users can't go wrong with this, even if it's portrayed as an "entertainment" notebook; just get Vista Ultimate and you'll be ready to rock and roll with this machine.
Have a good one,
Miguel.
P.S.: Might as well consider buying a Bluetooth mouse (sincronized perfectly without proprietary software), a Quickdock station and an additional AC adapter. Just makes it easier to work when in the office.
Great price for this laptop, problem with camera and vista.......2007-12-19
This is a great laptop for me, is powerful and small, excellent almost for all.
The only inconvenient is the web cam. The web cam has good resolution but not always is found for windows... I don't know why. But when switch the status device to disable and switch to enable again (in windows hardware manager), windows can to found the web cam device again. I think that is other bug of windows vista.
HIG
Works like a charm.......2007-12-09
I use it for graphic design, web page creation, surfing the Internet and a variety of business functions. Original machine came with 2GB of RAM and I bumped it up to 4GB to handle all the design apps that are running on it (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Dreamweaver). To this date I've been completely satisfied.
In addition, the screen is gorgeous, the touch-pad is perfect, and the operation is very smooth. Some people aren't happy with Vista, but if your system can handle it, it's actually quite nice (once you get over the tiny learning curve).
I travel by train to and from work every day, and I use this laptop on the road all the time. While it's certainly not bomb-proof, it can handle most normal wear and tear. (If you need something virtually indestructible, you might want to check out a Lenovo).
A couple of quick notes:
1. HP puts a bunch of additional software on their factory computers. I'd highly recommend uninstalling most of it to speed up your system. If you're not sure how, most places will do it for you for a small fee.
2. HP customer service is notoriously bad (I haven't had to call them yet, but I've heard lots of stories). If you're not a technical person and freak out when something goes wrong with your machine - you might not want an HP. However, if you're comfortable with diagnosing and fixing most problems (or have friends who are), then you'll be just fine.
3. For the price, portability, overall aesthetics and impressive specs, this computer is a actually a pretty great deal. Until I have any major problems, I'll continue recommending it to most users with similar needs.
