    The Basics

    Screen, Graphics and Sound
The 17-inch WXGA+ high-definition BrightView widescreen (1440 x 900 resolution) provides a 45 percent larger picture for DVD movies than a 15-inch screen. Video is powered by the Nvidia GeForce 7600 graphics card, which was chosen by PC World magazine as one of the 100 Best Products of 2006 (July, 2006). It has 256 MB of discrete video RAM for home-theater quality video. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content. It also offers full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 and true high dynamic-range (HDR) lighting. And it's ready for the next step in graphics processing--SLI technology (Scalable Link Interface)--which delivers twice the performance of a single GPU configuration by allowing two graphics cards to run in parallel.

    Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The Intel PRO wireless LAN 3945ABG provides a tri-mode network connection (supporting 802.11a/b/g), with throughput up to 54 Mbps at 5 GHz (802.11a) and 2.4 GHz (802.11g). It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (replacing the PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a very good offering of connectivity options, which does include super-fast USB 2.0 and FireWire:

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. The HP Photosmart Premier photo and imaging software makes digital photography fast and easy by helping you organize, edit, protect, and share your digital pictures and video clips. Sonic's DigitalMedia Plus makes it easy and intuitive to back up your pictures, videos, and music onto DVD-R/+R media for safekeeping. It also comes with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate), PC Recovery, MSN Encarta Plus, Microsoft Money, Muvee AutoProducer, and RealRhapsody.

    Dimensions and Weight
    This notebook measures 15.16 x 11.65 x 1.57 inches and weighs 7.8 pounds.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars works for me.......2007-11-06

i do own the hp dv9030us for a year now, upgraded to vista home premium, and so far no problems at all!!!my only problem is with hp's customer support, they suck big time, but i think that if u know how to work out your problems without help from best buy or paying money for some dude to install the software for you...u can go along with it.my only problme now: no hp quick launch support for vista...

1 out of 5 stars Worst laptop ever - learn from me and buy a Mac!.......2007-10-02

I was thrilled to buy this laptop over a year and a half ago. It replaced a reliable Compaq laptop that lasted me over five years with no problems. This computer looks gorgeous but the numerous bugs have been a huge issue for me. The quick play does not work consistently- it tends to launch the entire computer - not conserving energy as it is supposed to. The Light Scribe sounds good but is complicated and annoying to use. The large screen is beautiful, but the computer is heavy as a result, and it gets very hot if you put it on your knees or legs. Therefore, I spend time hunched over a table when I'd rather be holding the computer on me.

My hard drive completely crashed and HP replaced it under warrenty- but as a result- I lost all of the programs that I had paid to have cleaned and installed at Best Buy. What a nightmare. I am still having a problem that HP says they never noticed with their so called "diagnostics".... the caps lock will occasionally turn on without me pressing it. When this happens, I have to either type in CAPS without punctuation - or shut down and restart my entire computer. When this occurs mid-e-mail, believe me, it's VERY ANNOYING!!

I recently bought a new wireless printer and decided to buy an HP- thinking it would be most compatible with my laptop. Ironically, my five year old Mac desktop found the printer, completed the software installation and printed a test page in less than half the time the software install on my HP Pavilion took. The HP Pavilion laptop gave me 3 error messages and made me restart my computer to get to the same stage the Mac did easily and flawlessly. I've been torn between the two formats for years - but this confirms it for me. HP SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!! Avoid them.

    5 out of 5 stars laptop.......2007-07-19

5 out of 5 stars A perfect entertainment PC, period.......2007-06-05

I received it 5 days ago and have been toying with it since then. I'll try to provide my honest opinion on several issues that one might face while making a purchase.

    1. I'd hard time deciding but finally I chose WSXGA (1680 x 1050) screen instead of WXGA (1400 x 900) and I made the right decision because on 17'' screen, it looks amazing. Prior to the purchase, I read that WSXGA makes fonts/icons very small. I wear glasses (-2 both eyes) but am fine with it. The fonts/icons are NOT small and easily visible. So go for WSXGA without giving it a second thought.

    2. My processor is Intel Core 2 DUO (1.8 GHz). This is enough for me as I am not a gamer. I use laptop for surfing, watching movies and work with applications such as MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Adobe. No need to spend extra bucks for higher processor speed if you are going to stick with basic applications as I do. Its not worth it.

    3. I've 1 GB RAM. Again its enough if you are not a gamer.

    4. Its definitely portable (not as portable as smaller laptops of course) if you have a suitable carrying case. I recommend Targus CVR217 and Lowepro Tropolis 1700 as I own them to carry it and they are perfect for carrying this laptop.

    5. Protection plan: I purchased 4 yrs service plan with accidental damage protection. It cost me $475 (including tax) The reason being, I wanted to secure my investment for next few years. I would highly recommend that you purchase it at least for next 2 yrs. I purchased accidental damage protection as it is a big and heavy machine and you may drop it if you are not extra careful. It cost me $125 (included in above $475) for 4 yrs. So I guess it makes sense to pay some $30/yr to protect it from accidental spills, drops etc. The best part is that the most expensive component of your laptop, the LCD screen is covered by it.

    6. Numeric keypad is a great thing for those who deal with numbers a lot (I do). I don't think any other 17'' machine offers numeric keypad. Thats one reason I didn't purchase DELL E1705. They have wasted lot of space by leaving more than an inch on both sides of the keyboard. DELL should definitely think about adding numeric keypad on its 17'' laptops.

    7. The integrated webcam is pretty cool if you chat a lot.

    8. Now few cons. The headphone jacks are in front. I wish they were on sides but it is not really a problem. The touchpad is smooth but has a bit of drag and your finger kinda sticks to it because its just too smooth. Again not really a problem as I use an external mouse most of the time.

    9. I got Windows Vista which is not bad in my opinion but many softwares (third party) that used to work perfectly in XP, don't work with Vista. I wish HP provided us with a bit of choice here.

Overall its a great laptop for those who want to purchase 17''. The machine looks slim and sleek for 17''. A big advantage over DELL E1705 which really looks big to me. Its not as small as MacBook Pro but then its $1800 cheaper.

I would update this review in case there is any significant change in my opinions. But I hope there is none :)

4 out of 5 stars Great replacement for a desktop........2007-02-15

I purchased this machine after I got a dv9040us for my daughter for Christmas. I was thrilled by the screen quality!
    Pros: Clear picture
    Widescreen with 10 key
Touch Pad is easy to use
Express Card (Purchased the analog TV tuner to use with it.)
Built in wireless is great quality....can get signal from anywhere

Cons: Battery life is only good when not plugged in.
Keyboard takes time getting use to...shift key is small
Heavy if you are going to tote it around
Built in web cam is only good

I also purchased the additional base with wireless keyboard and 300g additional memeory. This has been great because I can download my iTunes, pictures, and audio books there without it slowing down the system and taking up space.

I own a total of 5 HP computers....I have used their technical support on-line and found them easy to deal with. My problems are solved quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend HP.
