For multimedia mavens on the go, the HP Pavilion tx1205us tablet PC is light enough to take anywhere and is a great resource for showing presentations thanks to its 180-degree swiveling 12.1-inch display. Weighing just 4.2 pounds, the tx1205us delivers the same screen resolution and performance as a 15.4-inch notebook, but weighs over 2 pounds less. This stylish notebook introduces HP Imprint--a durable high gloss finish with an exclusive inlaid design that also incorporates touch-sensitive media controls for easy and quick access.
Protect your system and online accounts with your unique fingerprint for advanced security and peace of mind. The integrated 1.3-megapixel WebCam (and integrated microphone) provides easy video conferencing via VoIP and video IM chats. Optimized for mobile performance, it's powered by the 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 dual-core processor, which offers 64-bit computing capability and higher throughput for simultaneous computing tasks. Other features include a 160 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), built-in 54g Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), multi-format/dual-layer LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive (which also burns CDs), ExpressCard slot, and NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 video/graphics card.
It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: The 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC's capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.
Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The 160 GB hard drive (5400 RPM) offers enough to room to hold a digital audio library of over 26,000 songs and still have room left over for movies, games, and a large collection of software. This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (2 x 512 MB) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. This notebook has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB). Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
The 12.1-inch LCD screen can swivel 180 degrees, providing optimal angles for viewing DVD movies and business presentations, and it folds flat for working in tight travel spaces such as airplanes or trains. It has a 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics/video card, which provides up to 287 MB of video memory shared with the system memory. It features NVidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications.
The Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound, and a pair of stereo earbud headphones with volume controls is included. You'll be able to privately share enjoyment of multimedia with a friend via the dual headphone jacks. One of the headphone jacks is also compatible with SPDIF digital audio output for home theater surround sound.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:
- 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
- 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).
Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Customer Reviews:
Slow, too slow.......2007-11-23
This is one of the worst notebook i ever tried. A machine with 2 processors, 2GB RAM, 2,2 mhz should be much better.
My old notebook with 512 Ram , 1,5 pentium M and windows XP is twice faster than this HP with the terrible Windows Vista.
I am realy disapointed.
weel, Sorry for my bad english
Not completely satisfied. .......2007-11-18
Pros: Webcam, Fingerprint Reader, Remote control, TouchScreen, Microphone, 7 media buttons.
cons: Speakers, Battery life, Heat Generation
This gadget has been behaving good for 2 months and very recently it started making a stuttering static noise if I change the lid position. There surely is a loose connection in the wires that run to the speakers and it goes away once I change the lid position. Seriously HP should have thought twice before putting the speakers on the swiveling screen.
Vista hasn't been stable and froze a couple of times. DVD Playback is fine but you definetely can't watch an international movie (2.30 hrs) in a battery.
Lastly I find this laptop to be producing maximum heat near the fans. Forget keeping it on your lap, the heat increases as you start doing computationaly expensive tasks (like watching a DVD, editing in photoshop). Power button is flimsy and would want you to get acquainted with it b4 functioning.
I needed a laptop very badly and bought this in August. In future , I would go for a Lenova as they brought down their prices on tablets owing to market competition.
Don't Buy This Table PC - 2 Hr battery life! Always dying........2007-10-11
I bought this to be used as a tablet PC. After an hour an a half, I was called into a meeting, and the tablet died halfway through the meeting. Two hour battery life.
You buy a tablet PC to be portable. But even with all the power options enabled and display brightness to where you can hardly read it, it still dies in 2 hours in 15 minutes. With a screen bright enough to be confortable it dies in 1:45 hours. Less than two hours.
I bought it to do reading during the day and at night, because it has more of the format of the material I'm reading. But if I read more than two hours at night, it dies. So I have to keep it plugged in as I read. At an airport it is useless. Sitting 1.5 hours using it gives me only 1/2 hour on the plane. For a typical 3 hour flight, it's a dead brick most of the time. HP says each time you do a deep discharge, you reduce the overall life of battery. But with only a 2 hr lifetime, it is always being discharged to nearly zero.
To keep it operational, I have to keep it plugged in all the time. Do you know what it's like to have a portable tablet PC you hold in your lap always plugged in? I have to keep it plugged in, because if someone calls me into a meeting, I can't take the chance of it dying. It's like a bad joke.
Look for a Tablet PC that has a MINIMUM of 4 hours of battery life.
That lets this one out.
If you need a tablet pc this won't do the job!.......2007-10-11
Don't kid yourself! What you really want is the HP TX1440 tablet pc. And yes it's going to cost you 100% more. The big "no deal" item for the TX1210 was poor character recognition software. Pressing down on the screen and changing the pen to "medium" tip did not help. If you really need a tablet pc and you think you are saving money by getting the TX1210 you are probably in for a dispointment.
Nice NON TABLET Laptop TX1210US.......2007-10-04
I found out about this laptop from another website, shopped around and decided to buy it from Amazon. It's a nice lightweight, easy to use and setup for the average home user. I perform network administration, so it was a cinch for me to setup. Unfortunately I was misinformed by the site I was referred from and should have spent more time reading and the extra $800 for the faster processor and Wacom tablet functionality they were raving about. All-in-all since it's an internet purchase I will keep this one and I'm sure it will grow on me.
Some of the comments on this site are in reference to a different product number the TX1220US. Some of the reviews are in reference to that item although it's not stated more clearly in the individual review. Since this page contains 3 items it's a bit confusing. I should have known better. Can't complain about the machine, it's faster than my old laptop I paid $2k for and it's a lot lighter.
I've been buying a lot of Dells for the office and decided to look elsewhere after a few factory defects. So this little HP filled the spot.
For anyone looking for a nice 12.1" display it's great, has decent sound. It comes with the Media center version of Vista home, and has enough memory to make Vista's animation acceptable. There are a LOT of extra software items preloaded (I was surprised to see Office in the start menu) and they all want your attention initially. Once that's setup you should have a decent computing experience with this nice piece of hardware.
I gave it 4 stars because if you're going to use it for any sort of work purposes it's going to take an hour or more to clean off the factory software before you should add your own. In addition this is a 64bit machine meaning it will handle the 64bit instructions from Vista Ultimate or XP64, but it only has the 32bit version of Vista installed. Before that's a real factor this laptop will be in need of an upgrade("outdated"), but I was surprised this setup didn't take full advantage of the hardware.
