The Basics
- Processor: The Ultra Low Voltage Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 processor offers a 1.2 GHz speed paired with a fast 533 MHz front-side bus and large 2 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) Part of Intel's "Santa Rosa" lineup of chips, this ULV processor is designed for high performance and low power consumption--perfect for advanced multi-tasking, and 4 to 7.5 hours of standard battery life on a single charge.
- Hard Drive: The 48 GB of flash memory (NAND) storage is on the small side when compared to traditional notebooks, but it is understandable in such a small package. Faster and more reliable, flash memory provides a rapid boot-up and quicker access to applications while improving battery life. Flash memory is also more reliable than hard disk memory, mainly because there are no moving parts. Since data is written to stationary flash memory instead of a spinning hard disk, you have less risk of hardware problems with the hard disk when you're on the move. It's an ideal feature for a travel notebook where knocks and sudden movements are par for the course.
- Memory: This laptop has two memory slots and comes loaded with 2 GB of DDR SDRAM (PC4200, 533 MHz DDR RAM; 2 x 1024 MB), which maximizes the capacity of this PC.

sony definitely got it right with this laptop. stylish, lightweight and great battery life. depending on what i'm doing, i can get up to 7 hours with the standard battery. if i light up the wifi and bluetooth, i can still pull about 4-5 hours. the 48GB is nice and speedy...MS Word opens in less than 2 seconds; even my desktop doesn't do that!
the weight of this laptop is incredible. i used to lug around a 7 lb laptop. now, i often check my bag just to reassure myself the laptop is still in there. seriously, go to a store and see for yourself how light this is.
one thing you'll definitely want to do once you get this is remove the MASSIVE amount of bloatware Sony installs. i have NO idea why manufacturers insist on putting this useless, space taking garbage on systems.
this laptop does not come with recovery discs. there is a hidden partition on the ssd (or hdd depending on which exact model you buy). you can make recovery discs from this and then delete the partition to reclaim the space (about 5-6 GB if I remember correctly). not too big a deal if you get the hdd version, but if you buy this model (tz195), space is at a premium. there are some great guides over at the
notebookreview(.)com forums on how to do this.
there are some people over there that also have downgraded to windows xp pro. sony is apparently offering free downgrade cds. search the forums at the above site. i currently have vista business (the OS that comes on it) and it seems to be working great. i may downgrade to xp at a later point.
48GB is plenty of storage (not counting the space for the OS and I deleted the recovery partition after making discs) for me as i use this mainly as a second computer. this is not the computer for you if you plan on storing/accumulating tons of files (music, movies, pictures, etc). although, i have half my mp3 collection on there and still have plenty of room left (~20GB). if you really need the extra storage, i would recommend either getting a portable HD (there's some nice small ones out there by western digital), or upgrading to the tz198 system.
this is also NOT the system for you if you plan to do a lot of gaming. the 1.2ghz processor is great for most tasks, but gaming will make this system choke.
all in all, this is a wonderful laptop for the person really needs something portable (and can afford it).
Pros: light, excellent battery life, ssd is lightning quick, built-in wwan, bluetooth and webcam, crisp and clear screen
Cons: BLOATWARE, price, some may find the processor slow depending on the task
