Intel Core 2 Duo Processor
It's powered by the 2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 processor from the newest "Santa Rosa" chips, which offer a top-of-the-line 800 MHz front-side bus speed and 4 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.) With such a substantial L2 cache, data instructions can be kept close to the two processor cores, greatly increasing performance and allowing the entire system to work more efficiently.
The Intel Core 2 Duo's 128-bit SSE3 vector engine handles 128-bit computations in a single clock cycle, accelerating data manipulation by simultaneously applying a single instruction to multiple data. And its two execution cores are designed to share resources and conserve power, helping it to achieve higher levels of performance since it uses fewer watts.
Graphics and Video
The 20-inch widescreen TFT active-matrix LCD offers a resolution of 1680 by 1050 pixels--36 percent more than the previous 17-inch iMac. It has a brightness rating of 290 nits, a contrast ratio of 800:1, and a viewing angle of 160 degrees (both horizontal and vertical). An ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics processor powers the iMac with 128 MB of dedicated GDDR3 memory. It features some of the most advanced graphics technology available and delivers new levels of visual realism and a huge texture fill rate for smooth surfaces and complex character details. GDDR3 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 3) is a graphics card-specific memory technology that's better able to deliver fluid frame rates for even the most advanced games and applications.
This iMac also enables you to connect a second display in either extended desktop mode or video mirroring mode. The mini-DVI port connects to DVI displays, VGA monitors and projectors, and S-video and composite devices using the appropriate adapter (sold separately).

Better than expected........2007-12-31
I was a little worried about the bottom end imac, but it is an excellent performer. Toss in a matching 1GB stick of RAM and it will have all you need to run parallels and more. This imac has all the standard imac issues such as a louder than expected cdrom and screen gradation (lcd is brighter at the bottom than the top), but is still a great machine.
Phenomenal!.......2007-12-30
This is my second Macintosh computer. It was purchased because I spilled coffee (I know...I know) on my last revision iBook G4 which I had upgraded to 1.5GB RAM. It was a great little computer and served me well through lots of commuting and travel. Took it to the Genius Bar and heard it would cost anywhere from $700-950 to repair--I was not about to pay that much for a 3 year old computer either! So my mom decided that the new 20" iMac (entry-model) would be my graduation present, and we took my iBook in to the Genius Bar for a data transfer. Although my precious little iBook hadn't turned on in a week when we took it to the Genius Bar, when I returned to pick up my new iMac, both were functioning well! And I wasn't charged for the repair! AWESOME!
The iMac is stunning at 20" on my desk, I could not imagine having a 24" screen--just ridiculously big! The glossy monitor doesn't bother me, although I agree that the keyboard and remote don't particularly match with aluminum and white. I use a Microsoft Intellipoint Laser Wireless 6000 mouse with the computer which matches great in a silver/aluminum color. It also has customizable side buttons which I use to activate Expose. Typing on the keyboard feels good, and I like the buttons specialized for Expose, Dashboard, iTunes control, sound, brightness, etc. Customizing function keys is easy.
Leopard is a beautiful operating system, and I like the dock fan/grid stacks. Front Row is nice for music/movies, although I wish you could easily access the desktop without exiting the entire program and losing your place. New iLife is awesome--I like the upgrades to iCal and iPhoto. Inline Find in Safari 3 is also excellent.
I really like Photobooth and the included iSight. It's fun to play with just to take shots and film short videos for iTube, although I haven't tried it out for videochatting yet.
This truly is the most beautiful and best functioning computer out there for regular users. Power users have many ways to upgrade and customize the machine, or go for the Mac Pro. Really, any of the family of Macintosh computers are terrific. I have seen the light, and I love it! I will never again purchase a Windows computer!!! No need!
The iMac is a great computer.......2007-12-29
I bought the iMac as a convert from Windows I have 4 computers 1 running Windows XP (old work Horse), a laptop running XP (for work), a Dell workstation running Red Hat (for fun) and now this iMac. I have developed software on the Windows platform for years and I have to tell you the Mac OS X is superior and much more stable. I recently converted to Leopard and it couldn't have gone smoother. I bought an iPhone and was so impressed that I purchased this and I have no regrets. I am waiting for the MacWorld announcements and then I will likely purchase the new MacBook Pro as well. This is such a great option over Vista!
Perfect Personal Computer.......2007-12-28
I just received my Apple iMac 24" and wanted to give everyone a quick review:
A W E S O M E !
This is an absolutely fantastic computer. Fit and finish are superb, the operating system (Leopard) works very well, and the performance of the machine is "natural" -- so fast that there is little to no delay in any actions.
Two caveats when ordering and installing:
1. Don't order the iMac with additional memory built in; purchase the additional memory separately and install it yourself. You'll save hundreds of dollars (I purchased 2GB of additional memory from Crucial via Amazon for $70 -- compared to the $300+ you'll pay for Apple to pre-install the memory). BTW, this is a 5-minute upgrade that requires the removal of a single Philips screw.
2. The Leopard Migration Assistant worked flawlessly, migrating all files and applications from my older iMac G5 to the new unit. I ran into a problem with five or six licensed applications (third party) where the licensing information was reset on the new machine, but by performing a fresh install of each affected app on the new iMac, everything worked out fine. Purchase the $0.99 Fireware Cable (transparent) listed on Amazon to perform the transfer.
Only other thing that I can say is that this has been, hands down, the best computer purchase I've ever made. I am absolutely thrilled with this computer.
