The reviewers are not reviewing the model listed on the link I clicked. I have seen the same review for two different HP models. I believe the 9060 is being confused with the 9040.

Good Choice Overall.......2007-12-29

I have the M9060N unit for a month now. I intended this for video and photo editing mainly. I have since reconfigured this to 4GB memory and added a third SATA2 320GB HD using the space inside the box reserved for HP's slip-in drive.

I picked this because of its HDMI output (besides Quad Pro), which amazingly connects to my Sony LCD BRAVIA 40-in in full HD resolution (1920x1080p). I am impressed with its built-in NVIDIA graphics card. The memory usage usually doesn't get into higher than 70% range until I simultaneously work on Google Earth (memory hungry), Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 editor and Premiere Elements 4.0.

I thought the era of BSOD is gone with Vista but it happened once with those 3 programs simultaneously open. Vista blamed it on NVIDIA graphics driver (with use of Google Earth would crash although very rarely).

I have rendered a 25-minute HDV captured as MPEG2 file to H.264 in one hour. I also rendered an edited 16-minute .AVI file to flash video for upload to YouTube using Premiere Elements 4.0 It took about 50 minutes with lots of superimposed JPEG photos.

The PC is very quiet. I agree that HP's documentation could be better. Even their online doc is insufficient. I dared not go to HP's web for tech support due to previous experience. Just researched the answers myself. Windows Media Center receives my digital HD stations and plays Bluray/HDDVD. I have successfully passed Dolby Digital through its SPDIF coax to audio/video receiver for 5.1 sound. The PC TV tuner is no better than my 3-yr old HD TiVO TV tuner, which outputs to Windows Media through S-video in the back. Wireless keyboard and mice work fine even when someone is using the cordless phone unless you happen to be playing PC games with the keyboard. I connected the KB/mouse USB receiver in front for better and longer range. I have yet to figure out how to turn on built-in RAID support...perhaps later if needed. Again not enough docs both online and hard. Also how to capture analog video through front video ports and how to easily remove bloatware...oh well.

Lousy Quality Control.......2007-12-19

I bought my HP m9040n in early November with the intent of using it for a lot of video and photo editing. I also wanted to take advantage of its DVR capabilities once I figured out how to link wirelessly with my home theater. Unfortunately, I really haven't had a chance to put it to the test because in the first month, I needed to return it twice to HP for repair. The first time involved a noisy power supply fan (it sounded like something rubbing against the fan blades). Upon it's return from HP, I then learned that the USB connectors on the front panel did not work. This time HP techs replaced the front USB receiver and the CPU!

Call me a glutton for punishment but I still own this computer, and (fingers crossed) have not experienced additional problems for the last two weeks. At this point, my only other observation is that I am mildly disappointed in the speed with which programs open and run. I really don't see that much improvement over my 5 year old Pentium 4. Admittedly, though, I lack the computer savvy to know whether the problem lies with HP, Vista, my satellite "high speed" service, or AOL.

On the positive side I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge HP's tech support operation. Whenever I called, I quickly reached customer support and the techs tried their best to help. Returning my computer to HP for repair was also relatively painless. Turnaround time was about one and half weeks each incident.

If I knew then what I know now, I probably would not buy this computer. Tough to say, though, whether I ended up with the one bad apple or this is a more widespread problem. Good luck.

A friend of mine recently bought this system and I played around with it for a few minutes. Great components! I am really interested. However, I'm still not sure if the 2 harddrives of this system are configured in RAID mode (RAID 0 or RAID 1 -- and I would prefer RAID 0). Anyone knows?

Another question I have is anyone installed Vista 64-bit on this system? The motherboard, processor and RAM memory will support 64-bit OS, but I wonder if it runs smoothly? If if someone installed the Vista 64-bit, did you have lots of problems finding drivers? HP web site offers only a few specific 64-bit drivers.

This is a good computer and configured with quality components. I've now owned this for about two months. I have spent untold hours getting this setup to be used as a Media Center with a Direct TV Satellite Receiver and a Sony Bravia HD TV. And then had a Video card failure to agravate things further. HP's documentation and on-line chat support is totally incomplete and horrendous. I have owned PC's since the mid 70's and this is the worst documented computer I have ever owned. HP should be ashamed of themselves. Windows Vista operating software relative to the Media Center is "Shaky" at best. Be prepared for hours of work and many frustrations trying to use this as a Media Center setup. However, I now have it all working. Finally.....
