Amazon.com Product Description
The updated chassis with sleek piano black paneling and components is far from the most significant improvements in the multimedia powerhouse HP Pavilion Elite m9080n desktop PC. It's powered by Intel's newest processor--the Viiv-enabled 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600--which delivers four complete execution cores within a single processor for unprecedented performance and responsiveness in multi-threaded and multi-tasking business/home environments. You can also go wireless and clutter-free with wireless keyboard, mouse, and remote control, and it includes the next step in Wi-Fi networking with a quad-mode wireless LAN (802.11a/b/g/n).
You can watch, record, and pause live TV programming as well as schedule the PC to record upcoming episodes or entire series. The built-in TV tuner (providing both standard NTSC and high-def ATSC transmission) and personal video recorder (PVR) let you watch, pause, rewind, and record live television--up to 635 hours on the dual 500 GB hard drives (for a gigantic 1 TB of total built-in storage). An online Electronic Program Guide (EPG) lets you review the TV schedule and select individual episodes or entire series, so you can watch your favorite shows on your own time, at your own convenience. And you can easily burn TV shows and home video to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format LightScribe DVD/CD burner (16x for DVD±R), which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. LightScribe technology burns custom, silkscreen-quality labels and artwork directly onto LightScribe-enabled discs, right inside the drive.
Built-in drive bays fit optional HP Personal Media Drives and Pocket Media Drives, for up to 660 GB of additional storage that you can carry away with you when you go (media drives not included). Other features include 3 GB of installed RAM (8 GB maximum), secondary DVD-ROM drive, NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS graphics (with 640 MB of dedicated video memory), Gigabit Ethernet, 15-in-1 memory card reader, up to 8 channels of surround sound output, FM tuner, and a remote control with up to 16 feet of range.
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate combines all the features of Windows Vista Premium and Vista Business as well as adds extras such as multi-language packs and Secure Online Key Backup. It offers all of the features found in Windows Vista Home Premium, including Windows Media Center, Windows Movie Maker with high-definition support, and Windows DVD Maker. It also provides all of the features found in Windows Vista Business, including business networking, centralized management tools, and advanced system backup features. Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
- Processor: With four execution cores, the 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600 blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Whether you're creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. The Q6600 has a top-of-the-class 1066 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and dual 4 MB L2 caches (for a whopping huge 8 MB shared L2 cache). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
With four complete execution cores in a single processor, you get four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance that enhance multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads. The Smart Memory Access feature improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed. The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications. And with the Intel 64 Architecture, the processor can access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 Architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.
This processor also includes Intel's Viiv technology, which allows you to quickly turn the PC on and off (after initial boot) with a touch of the included remote thanks to Intel's Quick Resume function. It also offers specially-designed software that makes network configuration easy, for connecting to portable media players, DVD players, TV sets and stereos.
- Hard Drive: The jaw-droppingly huge 1000 GB (1 TB) capacity from the dual 500 GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space--enough for storing up to 635 hours of television programming, a vast multimedia collection, or for editing digital video. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 3 GB of installed RAM (PC5300, 2 x 1 GB, 2 x 512 MB) is a good start, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and gaming software. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. This desktop has an enormous 8 GB maximum RAM capacity (4 x 2 GB). To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
- DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 8x DVD-R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R DL Write Once, 16x DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW, 16x DVD-R, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds. It also comes with a second optical drive--a 16x DVD-ROM.
This LightScribe DVD+/-RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.
- Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with a wireless HP keyboard with extended range (up to 30 feet) and a wireless optical mouse.
Video & Audio
Video is powered by the integrated, SLI-ready NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS graphics/video card with 640 MB of dedicated graphics memory. Windows Vista can also allocate up to 1919 MB of total graphics memory from the system memory. With support for Microsoft DirectX 10 Shader Model 4.0 and High Dynamic-Range Lighting (HDR), it lets you rip through all of today's most advanced and cutting-edge games and applications. Power through games at record speeds with vividly realistic, sun-up to sun-down HDR lighting effects, and crank up 16x full-screen anti-aliasing without missing a beat. The fully unified shader core dynamically allocates processing power to geometry, vertex, physics, or pixel shading operations, delivering up to 2x the gaming performance of prior generation GPUs. And NVidia's SLI technology delivers up to 2x the performance of a single graphics card configuration for unequaled gaming experiences by allowing two graphics cards to run in parallel.
The video card includes composite TV out and dual DVI video out options. This PC also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
Be ready for the next platform in wireless connectivity with the integrated quad-mode Intel Wireless 4965AGN Wi-Fi chip. Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless. It's also backward compatible with 802.11b/g networks. You also get super-fast wired connectivity via the Gigabit Ethernet port (10/100/1000). For expansion, it includes drive bays that fit an optional HP Personal Media Drive (for adding 500 GB of storage) or an optional HP Pocket Media Drive (for adding 160 GB of storage)--for a total of up to 660 GB of extra storage. For expansion slots, it has one PCI (occupied), two PCI Express x1 (one available), one PCI x16 Express slot (occupied), two 5.25-inch bays (one available), three 3.5-inch bays (one available), and the following external ports:
- 6 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players (2 in front, 4 in rear)
- 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
- Composite video, S-Video, and analog audio inputs

Customer Reviews:
Wrong computer reviewed.......2007-12-30
The reviewers are not reviewing the model listed on the link I clicked. I have seen the same review for two different HP models. I believe the 9060 is being confused with the 9040.
Good Choice Overall.......2007-12-29
I have the M9060N unit for a month now. I intended this for video and photo editing mainly. I have since reconfigured this to 4GB memory and added a third SATA2 320GB HD using the space inside the box reserved for HP's slip-in drive.
I picked this because of its HDMI output (besides Quad Pro), which amazingly connects to my Sony LCD BRAVIA 40-in in full HD resolution (1920x1080p). I am impressed with its built-in NVIDIA graphics card. The memory usage usually doesn't get into higher than 70% range until I simultaneously work on Google Earth (memory hungry), Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 editor and Premiere Elements 4.0.
I thought the era of BSOD is gone with Vista but it happened once with those 3 programs simultaneously open. Vista blamed it on NVIDIA graphics driver (with use of Google Earth would crash although very rarely).
I have rendered a 25-minute HDV captured as MPEG2 file to H.264 in one hour. I also rendered an edited 16-minute .AVI file to flash video for upload to YouTube using Premiere Elements 4.0 It took about 50 minutes with lots of superimposed JPEG photos.
The PC is very quiet. I agree that HP's documentation could be better. Even their online doc is insufficient. I dared not go to HP's web for tech support due to previous experience. Just researched the answers myself. Windows Media Center receives my digital HD stations and plays Bluray/HDDVD. I have successfully passed Dolby Digital through its SPDIF coax to audio/video receiver for 5.1 sound. The PC TV tuner is no better than my 3-yr old HD TiVO TV tuner, which outputs to Windows Media through S-video in the back. Wireless keyboard and mice work fine even when someone is using the cordless phone unless you happen to be playing PC games with the keyboard. I connected the KB/mouse USB receiver in front for better and longer range. I have yet to figure out how to turn on built-in RAID support...perhaps later if needed. Again not enough docs both online and hard. Also how to capture analog video through front video ports and how to easily remove bloatware...oh well.
Lousy Quality Control.......2007-12-19
I bought my HP m9040n in early November with the intent of using it for a lot of video and photo editing. I also wanted to take advantage of its DVR capabilities once I figured out how to link wirelessly with my home theater. Unfortunately, I really haven't had a chance to put it to the test because in the first month, I needed to return it twice to HP for repair. The first time involved a noisy power supply fan (it sounded like something rubbing against the fan blades). Upon it's return from HP, I then learned that the USB connectors on the front panel did not work. This time HP techs replaced the front USB receiver and the CPU!
Call me a glutton for punishment but I still own this computer, and (fingers crossed) have not experienced additional problems for the last two weeks. At this point, my only other observation is that I am mildly disappointed in the speed with which programs open and run. I really don't see that much improvement over my 5 year old Pentium 4. Admittedly, though, I lack the computer savvy to know whether the problem lies with HP, Vista, my satellite "high speed" service, or AOL.
On the positive side I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge HP's tech support operation. Whenever I called, I quickly reached customer support and the techs tried their best to help. Returning my computer to HP for repair was also relatively painless. Turnaround time was about one and half weeks each incident.
If I knew then what I know now, I probably would not buy this computer. Tough to say, though, whether I ended up with the one bad apple or this is a more widespread problem. Good luck.
I think it is a very good system, but 2 questions remain ..........2007-12-15
A friend of mine recently bought this system and I played around with it for a few minutes. Great components! I am really interested. However, I'm still not sure if the 2 harddrives of this system are configured in RAID mode (RAID 0 or RAID 1 -- and I would prefer RAID 0). Anyone knows?
Another question I have is anyone installed Vista 64-bit on this system? The motherboard, processor and RAM memory will support 64-bit OS, but I wonder if it runs smoothly? If if someone installed the Vista 64-bit, did you have lots of problems finding drivers? HP web site offers only a few specific 64-bit drivers.
Excellent Computer, Lousy Documentation.......2007-12-07
HP Pavilion M9040N Elite Desktop PC (Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600, 3 GB RAM, 640 GB Hard Drive, Vista Premium)
This is a good computer and configured with quality components. I've now owned this for about two months. I have spent untold hours getting this setup to be used as a Media Center with a Direct TV Satellite Receiver and a Sony Bravia HD TV. And then had a Video card failure to agravate things further. HP's documentation and on-line chat support is totally incomplete and horrendous. I have owned PC's since the mid 70's and this is the worst documented computer I have ever owned. HP should be ashamed of themselves. Windows Vista operating software relative to the Media Center is "Shaky" at best. Be prepared for hours of work and many frustrations trying to use this as a Media Center setup. However, I now have it all working. Finally.....
