Yup, I'm another victim of this short-lived mouse, which was great while it lasted. I recommend looking into Kensington products - I had a very similar retractable pocket mouse from them that I used for almost two years without a problem, until I lost it and bought this instead.
Worthless in 7 months.......2007-10-01
I loved this mouse so much that I immediately bought another one. But suddenly after 7 months they both suddenly died (within a few days of one another). I tried them on multiple computers to make sure the problem was not with the computer itself. Unless you consider 7 months to be an acceptable lifespan for a mouse, don't but this one.
Targus Retractable Laser Mouse dead in 5 months.......2007-06-06
I bought this mouse about 5 months ago from CompUSA, and it just died in the last 2 days. It works for about 15 minutes and then dies intermittently. I strongly advise NOT buying this mouse.

I had this mouse when issued a work laptop. It worked great so when I purchased a personal laptop I opted to go with the same model. I like that it is small, retractable, and plugs right into the usb port. It also has a nice carrying case. We had a problem with the first mouse and the wire stopped retracting. However, my husband fidgeted around with it and got it working quickly again. Also, it stopped working. However, the store exchanged it with no problem. We suspected it stopped working b/c I always used it on the laptop surface itself which gets hot. With the new one we have used it on a different surface and experienced no problem. I'm happy with the product.

I originally had the very small "mini optical mouse" with a retractable cable that Targus offers. It always seemed just a little too small, although my daughter loved it. After pondering upgrading for quite a while, I finally ordered this laser version as a replacement and gave the "mini" one to my daughter.
I have only had it for 1 month but, so far, it has worked flawlessly. It is an intermediate size between the "mini" and a typical desktop-size mouse. IMO, it is just about the right size for pairing with a laptop computer if you want to do serious mousing tasks and still have a somewhat downsized mouse for travel purposes.
The laser technology seems to be more sensitive than the optical technology on the other mice I have used. By this I mean that the cursor gets where you want to go faster. I assume that this is why all of the new generation of mice employ the newer laser technology rather than perpetuating the older optical technology.
At the time I purchased this mouse, it was at a bargain price relative to other laser mice on the market - and this contributed to my purchasing decision. To date, I have no complaints or negative comments; and so long as it continues to work, I do not anticipate any.

I have to go ahead and not recommend this company; I've used their ram in my powerbook g4 for a year before it started randomly freezing up my computer. I'm in the process of warranty justice! Wish me luck.
