Installation is a breeze because you don't really "install" anything -- just plug it in and it's ready to use. There is not even an installation CD because all the included software loads automatically from the hard drive the first time you plug it in. For cream-of-the-crop, high-speed performance, use My Book Pro Edition's FireWire 800 interface. However, if FireWire 800 isn't convenient, Western Digital has you covered -- the My Book Pro Edition hard drive is also compatible with USB 2.0 and FireWire 400. Best of all, you don't have to choose between one or the other because all three interfaces are built into every drive.
Western Digital provides powerful software with the drive -- EMC Retrospect Express -- that makes backing up your data as easy as possible. In addition to full system backup, the software also provides system recovery and encryption. With a few simple steps you can back up all your data files, or just save your picture and music files. You can also schedule routine backups so you don't have to worry about it ever again.
Built for ease of use, this drive is equipped with a capacity gauge that shows how much space is left on your drive. The My Book Pro Edition also includes intelligent drive management features. For example, the drive turns itself on and off with your computer, and Safe Shutdown prevents the drive from being powered down until all your data has been written.

I bought the 750Gb version of this drive to run in conjunction with my new iMac 24" Intel and more specifically Time Machine to back everything up.
As has been stated earlier this drive comes formatted FAT32 to work with Windows, and unless you buy one from the Apple store you're going to need to reformat it to work with Apple.
It's pretty easy...just follow the following instructions:
1) Plug in the drive and power it up
2) Open "Disk Utility" located in your Applications > Utilities directory.
3) Select the drive in the sidebar on the left hand side (Select the higher of the two icons)
4) Click on the "Partition" tab on the right hand side
5) Under Volume Scheme select the drop down tab where it says "Current" and change to "1 Partition".
6) Click on Options at the bottom and select the "GUID Partition Table" radio button
7) Under Format on the menu select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
8) Click Apply at the bottom and you should be all done.
9) Once it's finished formatting unplug the drive from the firewire or USB port and then plug it in again at which point you will be offered a dialog box asking if you want to use the drive for Time Machine.
..and that's it.
The reviews above where people give it one star because they can't be bothered to spend 5 minutes googling these instructions on the web are pretty poor. I find the data transfer rate on FW800 VERY fast, and the drive has worked faultlessly to date.

i've actually had no problems using this product on both mac and pc. works great except the firewire 400 connector stopped working afer about 2 days. Luckily theres usb as well but still its cheap and effective
Western Digital Pro HD.......2007-08-31
After trying 4 other brands of top rated drives, a friend suggested the WD Pro drive and it was worth the few extra dollars. It works flawlessley with both my iMac and my PC's and both worked without installing any software at all. If I have one reservation about the drive its the 4 GIG limit on PC transfers. As I do video work I often have files that I need to transfer that are well beyond that limit. I could reformat the drive to Apple but then it wouldn't be usable by the PC.. I have discovered that limiting my video intakes to the computers to under 18 minutes makes the mov files under the 4 gig limit and so this work around works just fine. Then nice thing is I can set up a transfer of several of these 3.8 gig or so files in a single effort and go get coffee while they're transferring and forget it.
One other small annoyance was the fact that the drive as formatted only has 232 gig free. I feel that 18 gig overhead is a bit heavy but then comparing even my internal HD's I've discovered the amount is fairly standard.

First one that sent would not even power up. I sent it back and the second one they sent also would not power up. It's possible that it really isn't compatible with my Intel-Mac the way it says it is-- but I'm sticking to Lacie in the future.
The Dangers of Western Digital.......2007-05-26
These drives are just plain dangerous. The first one I had upon plugging it in commenced popping and smoking until I unplugged it. I sent for a replacement and Amazon happily obliged. The second just didn't work at all after plugging it in. Amazon will not replace after the second dud and I do not blame them. They should consider not carrying the line. Like it is implied, Amazon delivered great service throughout all of this, it was Western Digital that was delivering junk.
