The Basics
- Hard Drive: The 40 GB IDE hard drive (5400 RPM) is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.
- Processor: The Intel Celeron M Processor 370 is designed specifically for mobile computing, offering a balanced level of mobile-optimized processor technology, good mobile performance, and exceptional value. The 1.5 GHz speed resides at the very top of the spectrum for this processor (as of March 2006). It also features a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and large 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
- Memory: The 256 MB of installed RAM (PC4200, DDR2 SDRAM) will get you out of the gate, but is not powerful enough to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. But it does offer a very fast 533 MHz speed. It has a good 2 GB maximum RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB), which would enable you to add more power to handle graphics-intensive presentations and multiple open business productivity applications.
- CD/DVD Drive: This L2-S011 trims down the price with a more standard DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW combo drive, rather than the newer dual-layer, multiformat DVD burner found in other comparable notebooks. However, this optical drive enables you to quickly burn your favorite music mixes to CD (with its 24x write and 24x rewrite speeds) and comfortably watch DVD movies (with its 8x DVD-ROM speed).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200 IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It delivers up to 128 MB of video RAM shared with the system RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance. It also features an integrated audio card with microphone, line-in, and headphone jacks.
Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The VGN-FS950 has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Atheros) that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You get a basic offering of connectivity options, including both USB 2.0 and i.Link (Firewire):

I purchased this laptop for my kids, so my expectations weren't too high. However, what arrived was so nice I'm almost afraid to let my kids use it!
The Good: Screen is BIG and crystal clear. Nicely designed case(silver/black). Keyboard and mechanics are everything you'd expect from a high-end laptop. Toshiba reliability (probably one of the best.)
The Imperfect: Only 256MB RAM (although you'll never find more at this price-point); only 1 USB slot.
Overall, a fantastic value.
