The drive supports recording both 50 GB and 25 GB BD-R (write once) and BD-RE (rewritable) discs, as well as 4.7 GB DVD+R/+RW/RAM, 8.5GB DVD+R Double/Dual Layer, and CD-R/-RW discs. Simply put, this drive is ready for your most ambitious video and data storage needs.
A single dual layer 50G BD disc can store up to 4 hours of 1080 HD video, making the BWU-100A the perfect solution for keeping High Definition video shot on your HDV camcorder in native HD. Boasting up to 50GB of online, random access storage, BD discs are also ideal for computer backup and data storage applications. And, since the BWU-100A can record DVDs and CDs, all your burning projects can be handled by a single drive.
The drive can be easily installed in your PC via an available Parallel ATA (P-ATA)/EIDE interface. Sony includes the Cyberlink software suite, which authors BD and DVD discs, while also offering general disc burning for Blu-ray Disc, DVD, and CD. The software works with Windows XP and Windows 2000 PCs.
What is Blu-ray?
Billed as the next generation of optical storage, Blue-ray Disc (BD) places an emphasis on high definition video playback, high definition gaming, and information storage. Blue-ray discs have the same disc diameter of a CD or DVD, but offer up to 50GB of storage per disc and are extremely durable. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc has enough storage capacity (25GB) for approximately two hours of high-definition video with audio. A dual-layer (50GB) Blue-ray Disc can hold enough data for approximately four hours of HD video. Blu-ray Disc is backed by all the major Hollywood studios and most electronics and computer makers, making it the natural successor of DVD in the high definition arena.

I bought this writer to copy my HDV movies onto blue-ray and play them on my playstation 3. Once i wrote my first BD-RE , i put it in my PS3. It would not play and kept ask me a 4 digit password.Having no passwords set up i called playstation. Their rep was unable to help. Once i chatted the sony customer service from the burner, i got help. He was nice enough to give me the link for the burner's software upgrade. I had to re-write my disc again and it played flawlessly on my PS3. This burner is perfect if you have a HDV camcorder and a Playstation 3. Picture quality was superb.
Installation was a piece of cake. Needed to buy a 20 bucks firewire card in addition, that was it.
why not 5 stars? The PowerDVD software and the overall price tag.
Works as advertized but don't expect disks to play to on your HDTV.......2007-03-10
The drive was easy to set up and worked OK for data storage. Unfortunately the drive and software supplied will not make HD movies or slide shows that can be played on Blu-Ray disk players. By using other software it is possible to make disks that will play on some, but not Sony, Blu-Ray players.
The drive as supplied will not fit through the front plate of my new Dell XPS desktop computer (too wide) - have seen similar comments from other buyers.

Excellent......but...........2006-03-16
I love my new armor case! The product is high quality, and I feel that my brand new video iPod is finally safe in this case (as opposed to some of the silicon cases I've tried).
I brought it to work this morning to show it off to my pals at work and accidently threw my iPod halfway across the room as I grabbed it out of my backpack. I've already got my money's worth!
But....
I do have one complaint. The hinge at the bottom of the case prevents nearly 95% of all third-party cables (chargers, tuners, etc...) from docking to the ipod. And, if it wasn't that, the slot on the bottom wouldn't be wide enough for many connectors anyway.
I mainly use my iPod in my car, and it was heartbreaking when I went to hook it up this morning and the case prevented it.
But, if you consider it's main function is to protect the iPod - then it excells in that regard.
