Nice Sound & Comfortable too.......2007-12-25
I am not an audiophile, but a Classical music listener for years. Over time I have had a number of headsets and these are very nice by that standard. I was impressed by the light weight and open backs of which I've owned a couple before this. The sound to me seems balanced and the bass is not over powering. I would say that the headphones are neutral to the sound. The pluses are that you can listen for hours on end without them becoming uncomfortable.

Highly disappointing. I bought these to replace a pair of worn-out Grado SR-60 cans, and was immediately appalled by their brightness and lack of body. The much cheaper Grados were superior, as were Sennheiser's own 'entry-level' HD580.
Before sending the HD555's back, I compared them to my super.fi 5Pro earphones (driven by a HeadRoom Total BitHead headphone amp) at work. If anything, the HD555's suffered even more by comparison.
I ended up purchasing the Grado SR-80 headphones instead, and am fairly happy with those.

First off, I am not an audiophile by any stretch. In my lifetime I have only used ear/headphones that came with the product, which are usually always cheap. I say this only because I have nothing to compare these to in terms of studio grade equipment.
I was looking for something I could use for night time movie watching and gaming. I have a 5.1 setup but they aren't suitable for night use.(At least thats what the family tells me when the house shakes at 2AM!)
At first I was looking at true 5.1 gaming headphones but read mixed reviews on their sound and build quality. I then decided to go with a name brand headset that got good reviews and the HD-555's are what I ended up with.
I think the ear cushions are very comfortable and I can hardly tell they're there. The headband is another matter. I have the ear buds down about 1/3 or 1/2 way down but it always feels like the top headband is digging into my head. If I lower the earphones any lower they are sitting below my ears. I don't know why this is but I think having more/better padding on the underside of the headset would alleviate this.
As for the sound I have mixed feelings. My new computer will be here in a few days but right now I'm using an older Audigy card. The reason I went with these instead of 5.1 gaming headphones is because I figured these would be more accurate and I could use the CMSS feature on Sound Blaster cards to simulate surround sound. It didn't work. I can hear good sound reproduction from left to right but not so much front to rear. I can't really fault the headphones for this as much as the sound card but I'm not getting the sound I thought I would. I'm hoping the new X-treme Gamer card will help in better surround sound reproduction.
The most disappointing thing to me was when I first plugged them in there was a very annoying clicking sound coming from my left speaker. This happens if I use any of the Audigy presets like rock or metal. I have to turn down the bass to less than %40 then the clicking stops. If I don't use any presets then I can turn the bass up with no clicking/rattling noise. As I said I'm new to the world of headphones but can't see how this is normal.
The included plug is 1/4" but includes an 1/8" adapter. This is fine for computers but will be HUGE if connecting to an ipod. Even when plugged into a computer the adapter sticks out quite a bit so be careful not to be too rough or you could wind up damaging your 1/8" input. I really wish it came reversed and came standard with an 1/8" plug as this would be more suitable for home use headphones. As a matter of fact, the large adapter kept popping out of my front audio input so I had to use the one on the back of my computer which worked well, just inconvenient.
If I had to do it over I think I would go with true 5.1 headphones for my intended uses of gaming/movie watching. I think these are OK, but more for music listening. Besided the fact of not having that great of positional sound, the rattling/crackling from the left speaker is extremly annoying. I don't know if this is normal with using presets or if they are defective but either way I wish it didnt happen.
I originally was going to go with the 280PRO's as they were a closed design and looked very comfortable. Afte reading reviews it seemed as these were a better choice in having more accurate sound reproduction. In a way I am regretting my choice. I knew full well going in these are an open cup design but had no idea the sound leakage was as much as they are. They really are like having speakers on your desk when you set them down at medium volumes! When people said others can hear these while you are wearing them I didnt think it would be as distinct as these are. Its not a huge problem in my case, but be aware that people close to you will hear everything almost as if they were wearing the headphones themselves!
I personally think they sound just OK, not a big improvement over the cheaper sets I've used. I have also read reviews that think these are very comfortable but I think they're headache inducing. It may just be the fact I'm not used to wearing headphones for extended periods, but I certainly know they're there and very contrary to reviews saying they seem to feel like they disappear over time. So in the end I will keep these as they work OK, just nothing like I thought they would be.

I'd highly suggest these headphones as long as you don't care about noise cancelling -- not that it matters, since you'll be playing them so loud that you'll be deaf afterwards anyways.
They sound better than my buddy's Bose QC2s, and I got them for $250 less.

These headphones are extremely comfortable for casual and extended listening. The overall sound quality is excellent, the articulation is precise and the HD-555's offer respectable, natural bass response. The only drawback is that the sound quality is so good, the difference between compressed audio formats (mp3 & AAC) and uncompressed audio (CDs) will become more apparent to you. You'll want to reload your CDs to your digital music library at the highest possible quality. It's also likely that after a few days of listening you'll be looking beyond CD quality to a higher fidelity format such as SACD or DVD-A to see what these headphones can really do :-D

Effective and Flexible Little Charger.......2007-12-04
A few months ago I needed to replace my broken shuffle dock. After trying the IncipioBud (which I didn't care for) I tried the PowerBug. So far, I adore it and have absolutely no complaints. However, considering the poor product description, it was more a lucky break than an informed decision.
As shown in the picture above, the PowerBug comes in two pieces: the little white charger unit (the "bug") and a usb cable that connects from the "bug" to the shuffle. This means your shuffle can be plugged into the wall and charged anywhere, anytime; it also means the usb cable can be removed from the "bug" and plugged into the computer, allowing your shuffle to be charged and synced in the standard manner.
So, no -- this isn't a stand-your-shuffle-up-on-it dock, but it will do the same job, as well as allowing it to be charged in a standard wall plug. Better yet -- at least for me -- the "bug" also seems to be compatible with the usb cable for my older video ipod, allowing me a lot of charging options both at home and while traveling.
Be warned - there's no guarantee they won't change the design or that plugging your own non-shuffle usb device into the "bug" won't cause it to blow up. However, until they provide an decent official product description, I can only hope this will be helpful.

This unit cannot be used as a dock to sync with Itunes. Highly disappointing for the price. There is one that includes the AC piece AND a new dock...and it is cheaper. might as well buy that one just in case your dock ever breaks (which is unfortunately common). yet another product by apple meant to rip people off with little descprition of what you actually get.

It works, but not as perfect..........2007-11-24
It's an interesting gadget...both switch buttons are very functional (the Ipod Shuffle must be turned "ON" to make it work). The only major drawback is that it tends to reduce the volume output quite dramatically. There's a big difference of volume level just by plugging the Ipod directly with a regular 3.5mm mini plug to a speaker and/or headphones, whereas compared when it is attached and docked. Even when the Shuffle is at it's maximum, the volume control of a separate component or a powered speaker(s) must be turned up to fully satisfy the individual listeners' level of music.
I must say it's not quite as impressive nor expensive...just a "cute little add-on toy" to play with....
