Great earphones.......2007-12-26
First off, there is a "trick" to getting the maximum sound out of these in-ear headphones. For me, I had to stick the fittings into my ear and then angle them so they were essentially pointing forward. Meaning they were pointing out in the general direction of my eyes. This makes the outer body of the headphones rest against your ears, while the fittings rest inside and point angled out, and NOT just in toward your eardrum.
For me, this maximized the bass, without sacrificing any treble or mid-range, and really made the sound come alive on these little guys. And they are still way more comfortable than standard earbuds.
In fact, I am wearing them right now as I type, and the sound is so well presented, I can't even hear the keyboard keys clicking as I type.
Other than that - a nice long cord that gives you some room to move around, and the price cut on the black model is great.

Been doing comparison reviews off and on for a couple of months now between V-MODA Vibe Earbuds, Sennheiser CX300, Shure E2c, Bang & Olufsen A8...and even an AKG earbuds that has since gone missing in Amazon's DB. I was about to pull the trigger on the V-Moda first and then the Sennheiser CX300 (last week), but then something told me to look again. Somehow I stumbled on to this Denon pair and read the reviews carefully. I got a feeling that this was the one to get....even though it ($99) was 2x the sale price of the CX300 and there were only 5 reviews at the time compared to the others I mentioned.
Just got it and put it through the paces with all types of music on my iPod. From trance, house, dance, pop, classical, R&B...it played everything to my high expectations. Bass, Mids, Highs are all balanced perfectly. Just read someone complaining about the bass being non-existent. Try playing around with the fitting some more. I also came across this on the first try....I pushed the earbuds in a little more to seal off the ear canal and now it's a Bass house in my ears. It compares very similar to the tight deep bass from my Sony MDR-V700s (over the ear phones).
In the end, this is the best set of earbuds I've ever had. The Denon's soundstage also seems wider than my MDR-V700s too. BIG WOW THERE!

I'm kinda disappointed because these are the earbuds I chose after several months of research. I guess I'm not putting them in correctly because I can't get much bass out of them no matter how well I seat them. Might take some EQ work which is not an option on my shuffle. =(
how to best fit earpiece for bass & replacement earbud tips .......2007-11-24
the plastic tips on the Denons are (as far as i can tell) the same as on the Sony MDR-EX51/71 series. I had the 71s, which are of course not comparable for sound quality. But for getting the right fit on earphones, for both bass & treble, but especially bass: to fit the left earpiece properly, reach over your head with your right hand, and tug up on your ear, while pushing the earpiece into place. Ditto (reversed) for right side)
The first few times I wore the Denons, i could not tell from feel whether the earpiece was properly seated. Perhaps this was for being unaccustomed, perhaps the rubber tips change shape with use; after a few weeks of wear, however, it became very easy to tell when the earpiece was properly seated.
As for sound; the only other reasonably headset to which i can compare are the Bose Triport; the Denons are, as other reviewers can attest better than I can, far superior.
I now see also that replacement silicon tips are available from 3d party Generic and others; "replacement silicone earbuds for sony". I had heard that replacement tips were not available from Sony, don't know whether they are from Denon. Presumably these would fit the Denon, tho i have not confirmed this.
Denon AH-C700K.......2007-09-22
The Denon AH-C700 is darn near a perfect earphone. Over several years in the dap audio hobby this is as close to a keeper as I've come across. My earphone path has covered: Bang and Olufsen A8, Shure E2C, Etymotic ER4P, V-moda Vibes, Yuin PK2, Future Sonics Atrio M5, and Denon AH-C700. Everything has left me wanting more except the Atrio M5 & the Denons.
The Denons do just about everything right. They are wonderfully smooth, natural, detailed, and punchy. The bass is very taught and reaches low without overwhelming the rest of the range, mids are lush and rich with vocals being extremely lifelike, and the highs shimmer with detail and clarity without being harsh or sibilant. The soundstage is impressively wide for an earphone. Then there's the build quality- I've not run into anything in this hobby like this yet. They are made of spun aluminum, so no plastic housings to crack or break. The plug is aluminum too, with gold connector. The cord is thicker than most earphones, with a more rubberized casing- this leads to it not tangling. This is awesome when you just wrap your cord around your player... you just unwind it and it falls out straight and ready to go- no more cord knots. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with any accessories or spare tips beyond the S/M/L ones that come with it. A variety of other brands' tips fit, but reportedly cut down on sound quality a bit. A case would have been nice too, and an airline adapter.
As for comparisons, the B&O A8 is laughable by comparison, for more money. The Shure E2C falls wayyy short too- bright, & no bass response. The Ety's were very bright but detailed, but also no bass. The Yuin PK1's had very detailed sound, and wide soundstage, but lacked bass too (can you tell I require accurate, deep, & extended bass?). Then the V-moda Vibes offered a wide soundstage, almost-passable bass, but recessed and veiled mids & hight. Future Sonics Atrio M5 was the biggest step up- amazing bass response from an earphone, smooth relaxed nature, good detail in the mids & highs. Now the Denons take the best attributes of the Atrios and add in just about perfect treble and midrange, plus better soundstage. The bass may be a bit shy of the Atrios, but I can forgive that for the overall wonderful balance and refinement they offer.
