Easy to use product. Works at 16X as advertised. Attractive design of package differentiates it from most other similar function devices.
Suggested improvements: 1) Work at 20X. 2) Power from USB port, if possible, to eliminate extra power supply input and associated plugs, transformers, etc.
Would buy products from Lite-On again and would recommend to friends.
Door won't open........2007-12-23
I will not buy from this company again. Cheap for lite-on means doesn't work. The door to my Lite-On DVD/CD rewritable drive (manufactured 10/2006) doesn't open. It stays stuck. I finally have to trash it and will buy Toshiba again which has worked reliably for years and years. This was a 2nd drive in my system, and has always gotten stuck on occasion. Now it's permanently stuck. Disappointing.
Not bad.......2007-12-14
The only reason this drive did not get 5 stars is because it does not support linux. On the other hand there is plenty of community support for basic burning I just can't use the 'DUB' or 'FILE' buttons on the top of the burner. Other than that it's a solid drive and works well with most utilities.

OK my title for this review was a little lame... sorry.
Buuuut you'll be pleasantly surprised at the ease of set-up with the Lite-on unit. This DVD burner was purchased for use in a corporate environment and will be primarily used to burn data CD's and the occasional DVD (CD's are still cheaper).
The set-up was painless - only one restart for the drivers, etc. I did not install the Nero software - didn't need it.
Use of the single-button operation is nothing short of easy. Very efficient and fairly fast.
Good packaging and delivery options.

A few issues.......2007-02-28
I actually struggled with deciding if this was two stars or three for me, I opted for three I guess for the overall drive and product, but despite its 'supposed' ease, I found difficulties with it.
Straight out of the box and plugged in, I found there were really no 'clear' written instructions on what software to load first and what each of the bundled software packages actually did. All of the manuals are in .PDF format which are nice, and included, but I was still asking myself what each disc was for and what did I really need to load.
To my dissapointment, and through some trial-by-fire experimentation, I determined that the drive itself needed to have its firmware updated from Liteon immediately 2 versions newer than what shipped in box. Visiting the Liteon website could have been easier as the firmware and drivers seemed to have been buried. But once I did find them, I will say the setup and install phase was pretty darn good and straight foward.
The drive itself can be a little noisy at times, but I'm not sure what one expects from an external USB drive for this price point. It shouldn't be a problem if yoru are burining DVDs, but if you plan on using this device to watch DVD's, you may find the noise irritating after awhile.
My biggest complaint was some very frustrating trial and error burning my first DVD's. I used Verbatim DVD-R (the manual indicated DVD-R was an acceptable format), and I ended up wasting at least 6 DVD's before 1 actually wrote correctly. I keep receiving an 'Illegal Disc error' 1/2 way through the burn process and the troublshooting guide and onlien help have ZERO reference to this. It's puzzling because one disc did write successfully, a second one appeared to write correctly but failed on closing session, and the rest were all failures.
I solved this by using a Memorex DVD+R. This works fine, but at a much lower speed....5x as opposed to the capable 16x it can with DVD-R.
The pre-bundled Nero Express software has both pros and cons. The wizards seem straight forward, drag and drop files, and user intuitive...but over all, kind of high on resources and can be clunky at times. I had a few 'fatal errors' which suggests that while I am still running XP Professional, there are some bugs.
I had heard a lot of great things about Liteon, but overall I wasn't overly impressed. It just seems like another typical DVD writer/reader.

This external cd drive was recommended to me by a friend in the tech field. Bottom line, the product works great. A little noisy at higher RPM's, it is a minor issue. Speed can easily be increased or decreased and the spindle noise can be eliminated. Great reliability and well worth the money. The software with it is excellent.
Great Drive........2006-07-27
If you see my review on the Yamaha Multi Disc Player, you already know that I like versatility. Considering that it's external, and that it burns just about anything, it's a great drive at a great price. On CD's though it's a little too fast for my processor, so I use the internal that I have. No problems with the USB port. If firewire ever goes down in price, I may try that but until that day, this is fine.

Have not had any problems with this burner. Have not used any of the included software. I use Nero Ultra 6. Comes with a cradle/stand to hold the unit vertically but I prefer to keep it laying flat.

Esta unidad externa de DVD±R/±RW Dual Layer Burner, resulta ser practica en el sentido de que permite la lectura y escritura de multiples formatos de disco CD y DVD en una sola unidad. La velocidad de grabacion es otra de sus ventajas, siempre y cuando tengamos el puerto de coneccion USB 2.0 notaremos lo rapido que son grabados los discos. La instalacion en la PC es sencilla, unicamente conectamos al USB e instalamos el software de grabacion que viene con el paquete (NERO Essential)o si lo prefiere, cualquier otro software de grabacion de CD/DVD que sea de su agrado.

I bought this DVD Burner about two months ago, and it is an amazing product! I chose this DVD Burner for it's price, and I have not been disappointed! I hook this burner up to my laptop extremely easily, and it will back up a single layer DVD in 7 minutes (8X speed) and a dual layer DVD in 14 minutes. I hardly get any failed burns, and the quality of the burns are excellent! I could have gone for a more expensive burner, but the difference in burning time was not worth the price to me. Highly recommended burner!

This player/burner is a solid device. It setup easily and ran fine on a new Windows 2000 SP4 installation where it's my primary DVD player and burner. The copy of Nero that accompanies the hardware is not nearly so reliable; it seems to close automatically, usually about 30 seconds after opening in the menu mode, for no apparent reason unless i've started a specific task. Very strange. I guess Nero wants me to upgrade to the paying version REALLY bad.

A superior external DVD drive. Windows Certified and computer geek tested, this is an excellent drive. I've used many other top names, TDK, NEC, and Phillips, and this one seems to performt the best and has lasted the longest.
