Perfect Peripheral for modest storage needs!.......2007-09-21
This sweet little external hard drive will meets the requirements of anyone in need of modest back-up. Most folks with a newer computer will have a lonely IEEE 1394 port just looking for an application, all the while not tying up a USB port. The FireWire 400 connection provides for a fairly brisk 400Mbps interface along with a swift 7200 RPM disk rotation.
Running Win XP-Pro, I personally have never seen a hot swappable device "mount" itself as quickly as this unit; faster than a small thumb drive. As most users are most likely using WIN 2000 or XP and the unit comes file formatted in FAT32, you will want to reformat the drive to NTFS. This took about ~40 minutes and I was ready to go!
This handsome Zinc alloy unit comes with a small power supply adapter, a standard 6-pin FireWire cable and a dandy matching Zinc alloy base for minimal vertical placement. Additionally with appropriate cables this unit will connect to 4-wire 1394 and 9-wire 1394b connections. The only con is the One Year Warranty; ought to be 3-years.

After mounting and reformatting to NTFS, the disk properties show the hard drive capacity to be 115 GB rather than the advertised 80 GB.

My laptop hard drive crashed a year ago and although we've been backing our files up since then, the size of our files had gotten to the point where using cd's were just a pain. So an external hard drive was a good solution and also offered the additional flexibility of backing up the entire system.
My comments are as follows: 1) This is probably way more memory then I need, but given the incremental expense of going from the 40GB model to the 80GB model, I figured it was better to have and not need, then... 2) This drive is quiet! I need to put my hand on it to make sure it's really running because you can't hear it over the computer. 3) It has it's own on/off button so you don't have to leave it on all the time. 4) I have Windows XP (Home) and it was truly plug and play. 5) It comes FAT formatted, which resulted in 3 partitions when I installed it. It takes a little time to reformat it to NTSF and to change the partitions, but it's really not a big deal. If I were the manufacture, I would pre-format it the same way since earlier versions of Windows can use FAT but not NTSF. 6)Given my experience of my original hard drive crashing and reviews of alternate drives, dependability was a big issue. I figured that Iogear's 3 year warranty was a great proxy for this evaluation. Some other drives out there actually have 90 day warranties...no way I was going to touch those models!

I had no real use for the belt clip, and i would really trust it anyway.
pros:
-very gripy, won't slip out of your hand
-screen AND wheel protector
-protects bottom port, and flaps open for use
-everybody loves it!
-white part glows in the dark
-has heat releasing holes in the back
Cons:
-hard to put in your pocket due to high gripyness
-attacts hair and dust due to static electricity
-to use my Air Play fm tuner, i have to unfold the top of the cover
-screen protector does protect, but can make it harder to see w/o backlight
other than the minor cons, i'm happy with my product. ^_^
