Design
The D830 sports a classic clamshell design that features a small 96 x 16 grayscale display on the outside of the cover for displaying call information, battery life, signal strength, and more. Inside the flip you'll find a massive, 240 x 320 display supports up to 262,000 colors -- plenty of resolution and color depth for your videos and photos. A five-way center control button is positioned below the display, as are shortcut and selection keys. The phone's two-megapixel camera and flash unit is housed just above the external display, while USB data and charging ports are located on the phone's bottom edge. As mentioned, there's also a microSD card slot provided on the exterior of the phone for memory expansion.
Calling Features
With 80 MB of internal memory, the D830 is designed to hold all the contacts, phone numbers and addresses you can throw at it (up to a 1000 of them, to be precise). A call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls, and in addition to a vibrating alert, the D830 supports polyphonic ringtones and MP3-based music ringtones. A speakerphone lets you talk hands-free while you're doing other things, and picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. And because the D830 supports Bluetooth, you can use your favorite wireless headset with it.
Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The D830 has all the bases covered when it comes to messaging. Support is built in for sending and receiving text, video, graphics and sound via messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging fun.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the D830, too. It supports the GPRS protocol, as well as the new, high speed EDGE data protocol. When used with your carrier's data service and the phone's USB or Bluetooth data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs. There's also a built-in browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing. T9 text entry, which is a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile text messaging users.
A number of handy productivity tools are bundled with the D830 including a voice memo recorder, an alarm clock, a calculator with currency converter, a calendar, and a to-do list. And because the D830 supports the SyncML synchronization standard, you can easily sync your PC-based contacts. There's even a document viewer for opening attachments, as well as a Bluetooth printing system for printing documents from the handset.
Imaging and Entertainment
The D830's built-in two-megapixel camera captures stills and video to the phone's internal memory, or to a microSD memory card. You can use the phone's TV output to display your photos and videos on a TV screen. Into music? You're in luck with the D830. Store your favorite MP3-, AAC-, or AAC+-based music on the D830 and listen whenever the feeling strikes you. When you want to jam out in private you can hook up a Bluetooth wireless stereo headset. Lastly, if you want to dress up the D830, picture effects, custom screensavers, backgrounds, and themes can be set to fit your personality.
Java support is built into the D830, making it a powerful gaming companion. You can also use the handset's USB data connection to load more games and files onto the phone.

if you are really into thin phones.. this is the one for you (thinner than razor) but you'll have to sacrifice functions such as short batt life (approx 36hrs on standby w/ a few calls)and soft speakerphone volume...and for some you have to get used to the keypad.

The phone arrived right on schedule from the supplier. I've always liked Samsung phones because of their simplicity so I decided to buy the D830. This phone comes with a software CD, data cable, charger cable and headset, which I might add is perfectly equalised and gives off a near "surround-sound system" quality for your music.
I received 3 versions of the manaul with the phone in 3 different languages EXCEPT English. Even though the phone is advertised as the 'slimmest' it's still a little on the large side in terms of height and width. The volume of the phone itself (without the earpiece) is low outdoors even when you turn up the volume to the maximum, so if you have trouble hearing, you'll definitely have trouble hearing clearly.
When you miss a call, the caller ID on the front of the phone does not alert you. So you can't see right away that you've missed a call unless you open the phone to check.
Other than those disadvantages, the phone itself is a good showpiece and overall a trendy design.
Got it yesterday and i love it already .......2007-01-13
I ve got this phone yesterday for my wife and i got it in stylish red color it is the ULTRA edition 9.9,she loved the design the first minute she has seen it .The only issue about the phone is that it has came from France, and the manual is all in French.It took me about 10 minutes to find English in the menu and 15 minutes after that to set up the whole thing.A large and bright diplay allows you to scroll down the easiest menu i've ever seen,it's packed with features i need and i like. Great phone.

Bought this phone about 2 weeks ago, it is a great phone. Excellent reception (have not lost a signal yet), a host of features, light, and slim. The bluetooth works well, MP3 player is good as is the built in camera. The user interface is very intuitive, you don't have to read any manuals to get it up and going on the functions. Lots of extras with this phone. I would highly recommend it, especially over the Motorola V3I or the Razr, the 830 is much easier to use, better looking and much slimmer than the Motorola offerings.
Nice phone, but flat keypad is a pain to use.......2006-10-19
I just got this phone a few days ago to replace my broken SonyEricsson Z520a. I'm attracted to this Samsung because of the thin form factor and pretty impressive spec.
But the first time I used it, I was totally disappointed. My biggest complaint is the flat keypad. The keypad doesn't give you enough tactile feedback when you press it. And for some reasons some keys are harder to press than the others. This really annoys me since I text message a lot.
Other than the keypad, this is a very nice phone. The screen is high resolution (320 x 240) and very bright. IMHO the user interface is not as intuitive as Sony Ericsson's.
I tried Bluetooth on this phone and was able to transfer my phonebook from my laptop without a hitch.
But for me, the keypad is the killer. That's the reason I rated it 2 stars. This phone is going back to Amazon for sure.
