Nice enclouses, but keep them ventelated........2007-08-20
These enclosures do a great job at keeping the drives cool. I have four of them stacked on top of each other, but the enclosures were getting almost too hot to touch. I've added some spacers between the drives to allow for air to circulate between them and they are much cooler.
If you leave the your drives on all of the time and plan on sleeping in the same room, forget it. The blue LED on the front is blindingly bright at night, let alone having four of them.
I use the enclosures with drives I use for video editing and have not had one fail yet. (knock on wood). The power supplies are inline and have regular plugs on the end, meaning you have no wall-warts to deal with.
Duplicate GUIDs means you can't use these together.......2007-08-07
I bought 2 of these and fought with them for hours before realizing that the reason I couldn't get both devices to mount at the same time is because they are each burned with the same GUID. A GUID, by definition, is supposed to be unique. These are not.
MacAlly Firewire enclosure.......2006-11-06
On two separate occasions I've purchased the PHR-100AF enclosure. Both times the results exceeded my hopes. They are easy to put into service--the hard disk mounting is a snap and all hardware is provided. They are thermally satisfactory without an internal fan, they look good, and the activity light is very visible.
PHR-100AF: Quiet external firewire hdd.......2006-09-04
These enclosures have served me well.
I bought a couple of these Macally PHR-100AF FireWire 400 enclosures after the IDE connector on my motherboard went bad. I am able to boot my Mac from this external drive which has extended the life of my machine.
Pros:
* Case is constructed of aluminum - strong and good heat dissipation
* Quiet - hard disk drive rides on rubber mountings (included) inside the enclosure - resulting in *very* quiet operation
* Power on/off switch on back of case allows you to save electricity (and hdd life)
* Two FireWire ports allow daisy-chaining of multiple drives (I use two of these drives to plug into one FireWire port on my computer)
* Fast connection - My computer is now booting from a hard drive that resides in this external enclosure with no noticable reduction in speed
* FireWire cable included in packaging - thoughtful
* Rubber rails running along the top and bottom of the enclosure add to sound/vibration reduction
* Super-easy drive installation - instruction manual has clear photo images
Cons
* Giant blue/red drive activity indicator on front of enclosure is on constantly - distracting (minus one star)
* Huge - alone it is ok, but when combined with the power brick, the combined size is huge
* Requires a AC power brick (included)

We bought two of these cases to make use of drives from an unused server. The cases made it easy to install the drives, are quiet due to the external power supply, have a neat and useful indicator light on the front, and they have a power switch as well. We plan to buy more as the need arises.
