|
A beautiful phone: The K700 is a device with dual fronts -- a camera that is a phone that is a camera. |
Screen star: All your videos, games and images look great on this 176x220 color display. |
Slick styling: Brushed aluminum gives the K700i a touch of class. |
Design
The K700i sticks with tried and true candybar styling that makes many Sony Ericsson phones so distinctive. In many ways, the phone more resembles a digital camera, with a large 176 x 220 display on one side and a pronounced camera system on the other. The camera unit features VGA (640 x 480) resolution, as well as an LED flash and a self-portrait mirror. Meanwhile, a five-way directional button on the front of the device controls most of the phone's menus and features. In addition to USB and Bluetooth connectivity, the K700i also has an infrared receiver for data synchronization.
Calling Features
The K700i's phone book can hold up to 510 contacts with multiple entries per contact, while a call list remembers your most recent missed, received and dialed calls. The phone's voice activated dialing makes calling contacts as easy as saying their names, while the built-in speakerphone makes it a cinch to talk without having the phone to your ear. Polyphonic ringtones are included and there's even a bundled application that lets you mix your own ringtones with up to 16 tracks. Picture caller ID lets you assign a photo to specific callers. Similarly, a ringer ID lets you assign ringtones to callers. For those times you want to keep things discreet, there's a vibrate ringer mode.
Because the K700i is Bluetooth-enabled, you can use a variety of headsets and handsfree kits for total wireless freedom when you're on the go.
Messaging, Internet and Tools
The K700i is designed to be much more than just a phone. Support is built in for sending and receiving pictures, text, graphics, sound and video via SMS or MMS messages. When used in combination with the phone's built-in still and video camera, MMS opens up a whole new world of messaging possibilities (carrier messaging charges may apply). Instant messaging is also supported and the phone ships with a built-in email client with support for POP3 and IMAP4 protocols. There's also a built-in Web browser for downloads and mobile Web browsing, plus you can use Sony Ericsson's "QuickShare" feature to quickly send your photos, videos and other media to your contacts, as well as other devices. Meanwhile, T9 text entry, a technology that makes it easier for people to enter words and text on handsets, is built into the unit-- a plus for mobile email and text messaging users.
Getting on the Internet is easy with the K700i, as it supports the GPRS data protocol. When used with a carrier data plan and the phone's Bluetooth or USB data capability, the phone can be used as a wireless modem for laptops and PDAs.
A number of handy software tools are bundled with the K700i, including a voice memo recorder, a calculator, a calendar and an alarm clock. Use the phone's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth accessory or connect to a computer or hand-held device to exchange and synchronize data. The phone also supports the SyncML PC synchronization standard. This means the phone can be used with the included Sony Ericsson Sync Station software, which lets you synchronize your Microsoft Outlook calendar, contacts, notes and tasks with your K700i.
Imaging and Entertainment
The K700i has plenty of fun built-in. As mentioned, the phone sports a VGA camera and flash. The camera also supports video capture, and fortunately, you can capture as much video as you like, as long as there is available memory. If you like to hear tunes on the go, you can use the K700i as a portable MP3 player. Load up your tunes and enjoy them whereever you roam with a stereo headset (not included). Or, tune in to your favorite stations with the phone's embedded FM tuner. Forty megabytes of built-in memory gives you plenty of room for pictures, videos and music.
The K700i is a powerful gaming companion, too. The phone comes preloaded with several games and more are downloadable from both Sony Ericsson and other online mobile game providers. Enjoy enhanced 3D games with the K700i's robust Java support.

Customer Reviews:
great while it worked.......2007-01-07
I've had this phone nearly a year and have, up to this point, been very pleased with it. As all the reviews before me have said, this phone has many great features, looks good, and is a great buy.
I am disappointed though that my center joystick button has been getting progressively less functional over the last 2 months, and has finally stopped working entirely. With that button out of commission, I can't access any of the features of the phone (except the camera), including my phone book, messaging, calendars, etc. The phone is thus useless.
That said, I am looking for another of the same model to replace it and praying for better durability this time around.
Still one of the best phones out there.......2005-11-01
This phone will work with both T-Mobile and Cingular in the U.S. (all you need to do is take the sim card out of your current phone and transfer it into your new phone)
I have owned this phone over a year now and I still love it. I had a steep requirements list that is still not met by many other models. I paid over $300 to buy it slightly used from europe, now it can be had much easier and cheaper.
It replaces my previous Handspring/Palm Treo. Via Bluetooth, it easily syncs all my contacts and calendars with my computer. I never needed to enter a single phone number.
I made custom ringtones simply out of mp3s and assigned them to different people who are calling. No need to have an annoying phone that plays a computerized version of a song, this one plays the real thing. You may wish the convert the mp3 to mono and 56bps to conserve space.
The phone comes with 36MB of space which is still much more than almost every other phone on the market, more than enough for the average user. Once you take photos and videos, you can easily transfer them to your computer via bluetooth.
Another big plus is the thousands of free java games that you can download and place on the phone from the internet. Get away from the horrible selection and charges that your phone service makes you deal with.
This phone is small, durable, has a beautiful screen, more features than you need. The camera and video quality is much better than other phones of the same resolution.
Th FM radio pulls in more stations than I think any other radio I've used. That said, I never use it, because you are required to use the included headphones which I never bother with.
Someone mentioned this does not have a speakerphone. It absolutely does have a speakerphone and it is loud and good quality. It uses the same rear speaker for listening to music and its excellent mp3 ringers.
Mac users can use its bluetooth out-of-the-box for syncing and transferring files.
PC users can download free software off of sony's website to do the same. With the additional USB charging cradle, you can also update the phone's firmware to keep it up-to-date. (Ignore earlier reviews of a slow interface and short battery life, these have all been fixed with free firmware updates)
The friendly & smart cell phone.......2005-09-05
A few weeks ago I found myself browsing for cell phone features and user's reports to choose my new one. Coming to Amazon in the past has been a good and valued reference source; users' advice and experience are great! and it proved useful again.
Now I have been a k700 user for less than a month and I am happy to report that I agree with all the Amazon users pros and cons I came from Nokia and Motorola and in my opinion two areas deserve further comments:
a. It has a great menu system. You get anywhere in a surprisingly short series of clicks; won't raise your blood pressure trying to figure out how to do something. A sharp contrast with the Motorola way, wich never really felt friendly to me.
b. The contacts area can store different numbers under one name, and is displayed in a very smart 'tab' system. This is a big problem in other brands, since I used to store 'John's cell phone' and 'John's home' and the list would go very big and cumbersome.
I never thought in phone cameras or other add-ons would be so funny until I came to this phone, thanks to its friendly menu system and features I have been taking many decent pictures and short videos that shine in spontaneity, maybe not so sharp but I got a moment I couldn't have taken with a regular camera that was not available at alltimes, like a cell phone can.
The FM radio is very nice too, great sound quality, I am even looking forward to the SE Walkman phone for my next year phone replacement.
The only Nokia feature I miss is the speakerphone, that was very good, however, with all the plus I got in this SE K700i maybe I won't miss it so much.
It was good I came to this phone, Thank you Sony Ericsson. (And thank you Amazon.com users!).
Magnificent Phone.......2005-07-30
But make sure you get the latest firmware (R2AY004). The unlocked K700i I bought online had 13 month old firmware (R2AE033) which was never updated. This caused a hissing sound on voice calls and made the phone lock up every time I disconnected the bluetooth on my Palm T5 and Zire 72 after surfing the web on these PDAs. Rather than returning the unit to the online retailer, I sent my K700i to the Sony Ericsson repair center in North Carolina. SE updated the firmware (for free)on my K700i and I got the phone back a week later. I no longer have any issues and the phone works great.
What a phone! This phone has lots of features. The screen is absolutely gorgeous. Reception is great on the T-Mobile network here in NYC and suburbs. On my T610, I was only getting 1-3 bars in my house and sometimes I would get dropped calls. Now I get 4-5 bars at all times and reception is great. Moreover, with the updated firmware, Bluetooth works great on my PDAs and bluetooth headset.
Some people complain that there is only 41MB of memory on this phone. This is more than enough memory for me since I'm not using this phone as a PDA. I have transferred via Bluetooth a few of my MP3s from my PC to the K700i and use them as ringtones. The K700i is a great MP3 (or MP4 and other formats) stereo player. This is why people would love to have an expansion slot on this unit: they want to turn this phone into their MP3 player. Furthermore, the FM radio works pretty well too. But you need to use SE's wired headset (which is included) to get stereo sound from them. As a bluetooth geek, I don't like wires. But you may not mind. The camera is a big improvement from the T610 and actually takes decent pictures. Setting up wap and MMS on the phone was simple. Just go to Sony Ericsson's website and answer a few questions and you'll get all the settings for Wap, MMS and Email. SE sends a text message within a minute straight to your phone. I set up my Email manually as I didn't want another Email address. IMAP4 and SMTP works fine, as well as the Wap browser. I'm shocked by how well it works. Battery life is not that great. I have to charge it every day for 90 minutes. But then again I keep the bluetooth on at all times. Fortunately, all my accessories from my T610 work on my K700i, including my car charger.
Again, just make sure you get the firmware updated to the most recent version. At the moment, that is R2AY004. If you do that, you'll discover that this is one magnificent phone. I'll never buy a locked phone again.
Best phone ever built!.......2005-05-27
I've been a huge Sony Ericsson fan since they launched the T610/6 line, but now i found the KK700 wich is full of gadgets the previous phones didn't have. This has everything you'll ever need, it has a built-in VGA camera with 4X digital zoom and led flash you can use with Photo and Video, 40Mb internal memory, yeah!! i know, it's a lot. It can play MP3's, You can record and play Video on your phone, not like the Motorola V300, V600, and V3 Razr, you can only play video, it has an FM Radio Tunner that u use with the stereo headphones provided, and last but not least, the Game graphics now use 3D Techonolgy.
