Product Description
The Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro delivers superb, distortion-free images throughout its broad focus range, from infinity telephoto to 1: 1 (life-size) macro, as close as 12.3" without accessories. Its non-rotating front lens group makes it easier to work with polarizing filters and has a focus limiter (eg. Full Range; - 15.8 in.; 14.6 in. - 12.3 in.). A "focus-free" mechanical design allows the lens to auto focus without any interference from the manual focus ring. This makes it easier to hold the lens without affecting the speed or normal operation of the autofocus function. Rugged mechanical construction also makes it durable enough for even the heaviest use required by professional photographers. The Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX Macro features the new deluxe external EX finish. These features and other Sigma optical advances, including an uncommonly broad range of focus, make this an ideal lens for a wide variety of applications, from nature photography to portraits. A handy screw-in type metal sunshade makes it easier to rotate a polarizing filter.

Excellent.......2007-12-03
I just love working with this macro lens and my Canon digital SLR XTi. Perfect for my dental, intraoral photography needs.
Excellent macro lens for dentistry.......2007-11-25
I have employed my Rebel XT digital SLR into my dental office. I upgraded to the Rebel XTi (10 mpixels) for home. I purchased the Sigma ring flash with a Sigma macro lens for the Canon SLR family. If you look at the Lester Dine website this is basically what they sell for a few hundreds dollars more.
I compared the ring flash and lens with the ones offered by Canon and felt that it was worth saving $300 by purchasing the Sigma combo.
The macro lens/ring flash work well for dental purposes. After a little experimentation I discovered that I get the best images by using the aperature priority setting. All settings are used with ISO 400 speed. I set the aperature at 14-16 for intraoral shots. This gives the best depth of field. I also use the operatory light for intraoral shots. I set the aperature to 6 for full face shots.
I use autofocus but set the ratio to 1:2 to 1:3 for intraoral shots. This keeps the autofocus from "hunting". I frame the shot by moving towards the subject. Once I get close to the image that I like I use the autofocus to get the final focus for the picture.
Like I've wanted!.......2007-05-14
This lens was everything what I waited ! Excellent sharpness and contrast, good finishing and a good price
Great lens.......2007-05-12
I was looking for a macro lens to shoot detail shots of my knitting for my blog and a friend recommended this lens to me. I'm not a great photographer, but I've been able to get some really spectacular shots with this lens on my Canon Rebel.
Wonderful addition to SLR photography!.......2007-01-03
The sigma 105 macro lens is a great way to explore new worlds with macro photography. I am using this lens with my 300D Digital Rebel and the results are fantastic. Now, small areas in my backyard and local parks offer unlimited photo opportunities. I would, however, offer several tips for beginners with macro photography. First, and foremost buy and use a tripod. With many subjects, depth of field is critical and any movement whatsoever will be evident in your images. Second, if your camera can allow it, use mirror lock-up and a remote release to prevent movement. Third, have plenty of patience! Expect to take a lot of images to come up with keepers. No big deal for digital cameras, and don't be afraid to experiment.
Here is a fun project that I have been using with this lens courtesy of my high school photography teacher:
Take a nail and tie a 10 ft. piece of string to it. Then, as you are walking along a trail or path, randomly stick the nail in the ground. You now have a circle with a 10 ft. radius. Challenge yourself to shoot 10, 20, 50 or even 100 images within that radius. It will certainly cause you to look, and more importantly see differently.
This purchase is perhaps the best piece of equipment that has helped my photography.

Lots of fun and high quality.......2005-07-18
This is a fun and good quality lens, offering true 1:1 macro at a reasonably price. I will echo the other reviewers comments about the clutch mechanism. Pretty clunky for an EX series lens. Fast auto focusing should you wish to use it for portraiture or the like, I think it better to focus manually for macro work. I also like that this lens has a very small minimum aperature for increasing the al important depth of field in macro work. I recommend a buy here.
Essential Buy !.......2004-02-17
This 105mm Sigma macro lens with a fast f/2.8 aperture satisfies you in every department. First of all it gives you a 1:1 true life size macro and these macro images comes out truly amazing... extremely sharp, good color saturation and contrast(on Pentax ZX-7). The 105mm focal length is also suitable for taking portraits. Portrait results have also come out extremely well. The EX finish is aesthetically pleasing, scratch proof and has a metal alloy body for sturdiness. The hood which is provided along with the lens matches well with it. One can also use a 77mm dia lens cap which fits perfectly on the hood, so that the hood can remain permanently on the lens (hood is threaded so that it can screw on the lens like filters.)
A bit of a bother is the clutch mechanism which on has to engage/disengage while changing between MF/AF. But on the positive side, the focus ring doesn't move (in AF mode) and one is more at ease while holding the camera. The other thing is the long rotational travel of the focusing ring while focusing a subject and in AF mode this could sometimes take a while. This could be somewhat solved by using the focusing limiter switch.
Definitely, a well made lens optically and structurally and should satisfy one and all.
Excellent Lens.......2002-09-12
I bought this lens when they had a sale. It was [price] without shipping charge, and I think the price was the lowest anywhere.
I love this lens. It is a lot sharper than EF 28-135mm IS, which I use most of the time. Now I can take good pictures of teeth from my patients and also good portraits for my baby.
Overall it is very versatile and overall quality is excellent, and I would recommend to anyone interested in macro photography.
Close to be excellent.......2000-11-04
Sigma 105 EX macro is considered one of the best primes for its optical quality. MTF tests, which determine how sharp the lens is, place it just below the famous Canon 100mm Macro. The EX sign tells that the build quality of the lens is higher than that of a consumer-grade product. The big plus is a price. It is almost twice cheaper than Canon 100mm. ALso, it comes with the case and a hood and Canon does not. The drawbacks, however, include potential incompatibility with the future Canon camera bodies. I would highly recommend this lens for advanced amatures on a tight budget.
