1 out of 5 stars Do not purchase this!.......2007-10-26

This is JUNK. It was either broke or in the shop the first year i owned it. Now it is in the closet. It will only play and not record. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM! Save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-02-10

Was able to record my old home movies on to DVD without too many surprises. The unit worked flawlesly. Remember to "finalize" your DVD projects when you think they're complete.

4 out of 5 stars Works as I hoped it would.......2007-01-28

The recorder does a good job of recording VHS tapes and DVDs. We do a lot of time shifting and this recorder does a great job. I'm pleased with it and the price was right.

4 out of 5 stars Works very well so far.......2006-12-16

We bought this item about two weeks ago, mostly to record all of our old family birthday movies onto DVD's. I learned a few things right away, which I thought would be worthwhile to share. First, I had a little bit of trouble setting it up right at first, but eventually my wife came to my rescue. I had better luck using the setup function explained on page 16, I guess the automatic setup only works the first time you plug it in, and doesn't show up ever again. A few things I have learned about using recordable DVD's: first, only the DVD-R and DVD+R are compatible with nearly all DVD players. The DVD RAM disc that comes with the machine works great, and is re-recordable up to 100,000 times, but you can only play it on a machine that can handle it. Right now, there are very few DVD players that can play it (mostly they would be the DVD recorders), so if you were to record something and then you want to play it on your laptop DVD player, it won't run. Second, the DVD+R discs are supposedly a bit better for recording quality, but many more DVD player manufacturers are building their machines to be compatible with the DVD-R discs. So, for the future, I elected to go with the -R discs for the home movies. I also considered using the RW discs, but decided against it, for fear something valuable would accidentally get erased.
Something else I learned recently relates to the recording time. My VHS tapes last a bit longer than 2 hours. The one I just did is 2 hours, 37 minutes total length. So, it won't all fit on one DVD. It's too long for SP mode. I didn't want to record it in EP mode, because I was afraid of losing too much in video quality (which isn't all that great to begin with). So, I ended up with part of the tape (37 minutes) on a second DVD. Which won't fit into the single-DVD case. Which then makes for a second case. More expense, and more storage space, and so on. A real bummer. AHA! A solution! Flexible recording! On page 25 of the manual, it explains that when you have a source that lasts more than 2 hours, the machine can automatically compensate for the lack of space by slowing the recording speed so that the program fits perfectly on one DVD. Only one problem-- you cannot do this with the VCR in the machine, as it will only record to DVD using the "one touch" system, which doesn't do "flexible recording". So, we ended up using our old VCR, plugged into the input on the front of the machine, and it worked very nicely. One VHS tape, onto one DVD. Most of it is in SP mode, and then it switches to EP mode to get the rest of it to fit right at the end.

Like I said, we have only had it a couple weeks, so I cannot speak to reliability, but so far, it has been very good. I only gave it four stars, since I don't have very long experience with it yet.

I will plan to write another review after we have had a chance to use it more, but at this point, it has been well worth the money we paid for it.

Amazon.com Product Description

[Note: This item has been refurbished by the original manufacturer and is backed by a 90 day manufacturer warranty. Please see Product Features for more details.]

The Panasonic DMR-ES40VS DVD Recorder with Built-in VCR is a single home-theater device that takes the place of three different units. You get a DVD recorder, DVD player, and VCR in one unit. The DVD recorder is the most interesting of the three, allowing you to digitally record your favorite shows to DVD media. You get the advantage of film-like image quality, the ability to browse through recordings via thumbnail, and much more. Coupled with the built-in VCR, you also get the ability to backup your old home movies with the press of a single button. Your VHS tapes will only last so long, even if you don't watch them, so getting them to DVD can be essential to preserving your precious memories for a lifetime.

Panasonic's Time Slip function consists of two features designed to give you added flexibility and control when making DVD recordings: Chasing Playback and Simultaneous Record and Play. With Chasing Playback, you don't have to wait for an entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end. This feature allows you to watch a program that's currently being recorded from any point that's already been recorded--while continuing to record the live program in progress. Simultaneous Record and Play allows you to record a program onto a disc while simultaneously watching any other program that's previously been recorded on the same disc.

You can set your recorder to one of five different recording speeds, each varying in recording quality and length. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP and SP modes provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording. There's also the FR (Flexible Recording) mode that lets you record with the best picture quality possible for the recording time and remaining space on the disc.

The Direct Navigator feature makes it easy to find a previously recorded program on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles are shown on screen. With the Playlist Playback function, you can perform simple non-linear video editing using, such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes, or copying selections.

Jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away with the Rapid Random Access function. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, this DVD recorder can record data on available space throughout the rest of the disc. You will also avoid searching for a blank spot to start recording, or accidentally recording over desired material.

What's in the Box
DVD recorder/player, remote control (with batteries), AV cable, RF cable, power cord, and printed operating instructions.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2007-07-12

The features are great but they have a high infant mortality rate. Mine died two weeks before the warranty ended. I got it fixed. Now it's dead again, out of warranty, and it's cheaper to buy a new one then get this fixed. Two friends bought one around same time. One had exactly the same problem I did - died twice. This is the third Panasonic product I bought which croaked out after a year or two. They need to clean up their act. Meanwhile, if you buy any Panasonic product, especially their DVD recorders, make sure you can get an extended warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Versatile Video Machine.......2007-05-07

I bought one of these when it was new and decided I wanted another, since it does a good job with DVD's and the VCR I was using decided to act up. The DVD-RAM acts like a small-scale DVR and I am able to copy some old video tapes to DVD for future viewing.

The DVD part of the unit did not work when it arrived, but Panasonic sent me a letter so I could send it back for free using UPS and I had the unit back in 7 days working perfectly.

3 out of 5 stars A bit noisy, but its OK for the price.......2007-04-03

The product performs as stated on the ad. For a remanufactured unit, its OK...A bit noisy. The biggest plus is the price, thought...

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-02-02

I purchased the remanufactured model at the lowest price available and it was delivered four days later. I had read mixed reviews on this model but as it turns out, I was able to use the deck succesfully with little practice. I have copied videos from our Hi8 camera, from the VHS deck and from our Satelite DVR. The DVD quality is as good or better than the originals. I'm happy that I took a chance with a remanufactured unit. My one complaint is that the instruction manual was a black and white photocopy of the color original making it difficult to read. Some of the comments that its difficult to finalize the videos is much ado about nothing. I can't figure out how to insert chapters so I stop and start at logical breaks thereby creating chapterrs and the problem is solved. I recommend buying this model, but I admit its the only one that I have tried.

1 out of 5 stars Bad product with no manufacturer support.......2007-01-06

This product was glitchy from the get-go and has gotten progressively worse. Now it eats most DVDs that we try to record. Well, I've seen it again and again on reviews of this line of Panasonics, even many later models than mine, which is the DMR-ES40V. The unit eats DVDs. I buy top-rated, high-quality stock to record on. Doesn't seem to matter. Even after you "reboot" the unit as directed, by unplugging it for 10 seconds and then plugging it back in and holding the power button down for 10 seconds and then turning the unit back on. You record programs and before you can finalize the disk, it eats the disk and returns messages like: Nothing was recorded, Cannot read. Please check the disk, Cannot finalize disk. When you set the unit to record several scheduled programs, it will record some of them and then choke somewhere during the recording and get stuck saying it's recording when it isn't, then show that only a portion of the disk is still available for recording, while displaying the message that nothing was recorded.

This is still a bug several models later, and it appears that Panasonic doesn't care about fixing it, and they don't give a darn about quality and customer support. I went to their web site and tried to download the firmware update that it appears to offer. However, the download button takes you to an agreement page and after you check the I Agree checkbox and click Accept, nothing happens. There is no download. It just re-displays the original download page where you started. Endless loop.

Several reviews of several models of this product line stated that Panasonic would not support the customer even right after the purchase of a machine that clearly didn't work. The customer just had to eat it and buy another unit. Based on that, I'm sure not buying Panasonic ever again. Sad -- I've owned their products since the early 1970s. No more. I guess all they care about is taking your money.

My advice to other owners is finalize as quick as you can, hold your breath while it's finalizing and hope for the best. And never really expect to actually get to keep anything you record, it likely won't be there when you're through recording it.
