Customer Reviews:
Not happy........2007-11-22
Ladies and Gentlemen.
This my first review on Amazon. I am displeased with this product.
The negatives:
a. Extremely noisy player
b. Firmware issues: skipping, color problems when viewing through a projector
c. Very poor support
It is has nice features but I would not recommend purchasing any Helios Neodigits products soon.
They have a long way to go on Quality Assurance.
Not Disappointed.......2007-08-09
Have had this unit for a couple of months now. I am using it with a 47" Akai rear projection 1080i monitor. I am totally satisfied with the quality of the picture it delivers. I did not have many choices as the Akai is an earlier model with only component inputs. I do have a couple of minor complaints. 1. When I reverse the movie I have to hit stop, then play to interrupt the reverse mode. 2. When you pause the movie, then hit play, the sound gets out of sync. You have to hit stop, then play to get it to sync up again. These are minor inconveniences. I am not sorry I bought it.
Incompatible with CRT HDTV.......2007-06-14
In June 2007 I purchased the Helios H4000 specifically to use with an older 65 inch CRT Rear Projection HDTV (with no HDMI or DVI inputs)to take advantage of the 1080i upconverted signal using the component video output. Unfortunately, the unit generates a series of faint diagonal lines that slowly drift across the screen when using 1080i, especially when viewing a darker scene. I use the same input on the TV for 1080i HD satellite feed with no problem but Helios support insist that there is nothing wrong with the DVD player. They did state that their unit works best with a Plasma or LCD display - which it did - at least on a 30 inch display. I suggested that they mention this potential incompatibility issue in their literature so the buyer can make an informed decision. They offered to take the unit back if I paid for shipping and a 15% restocking fee - since the unit is not defective. Buyer beware.
Helios good ... when alive.......2007-03-16
I've had two units. While they worked, they gave a great upconverted picture. The problem is that they both died within 48 hrs. Hooked up carefully into surge protectors, voltage right, watch movies, looked great at 1080i over component out, but next time ... dead after sitting for a while in standard off position.
Solutions? You may have to switch off both top and rear off switches (possibly unplug the unit every time it's off?), and, despite owner's manual implications, connect only one output source at a time (I had component and RGB hooked up at the same time). That's all I can come up with. Cheaply made Chinese junk as far as I can see. Since this is one of the only component upconverters on the market, this was very disappointing.
HD over component... FINALLY... too bad the unit sucks anyway.......2007-03-11
All the reviews are dead on. For $170, what you are investing in is a product that will let you down.
If you got yourself a nice top-of-the-line HD 1080i TV back in 2001, you probably paid between $4000-$8000. Ouch. Does it tick us off that we can't get HD over component with DVD players? Yep.
News flash- we *bought* the right to HD over component when we bent over for the HD tv in the first place.
I have to say... if you *did* spring the dough for that awesome HD tv in 2001, you probably *also* sprung for a nice, heavy, DVD player. When you first see the box that this Helios H4000 comes in, you'll think you were shipped a DVD instead of a DVD *player*.
You open it up, and you are immediately shocked how light and small this thing is. "It looks cheap, I hope it works." is your first reaction.
THE SWEET:
=> HD (1080p, 1080i, 720p, etc.) over component- YES! YES! YES!
=> SmartPlay is nice
=> quick eject tray speed
=> firmware upgradable
THE SOUR:
=> color "banding" and flickering- horizontal striping that spans entire width of picture, flesh tones are "smeared" horizontally across screen, color/contrast flickers on & off like there's a loose connection somewhere, but trust me- I practically need vice-grips to plug in and unplug my component cables (ultimately, this video problem took my 4/5-star rating down to 1)
=> audio-sync problem: [PAUSE] button causes audio to be out of sync when playback is resumed and how badly depends on time of pause... this basically renders [PAUSE] button useless & you'll have to use the [STOP] button instead every time
=> time-elapsed display while movie is playing is rather erratic... sometimes 2 seconds will go by and the counter doesn't even move, but then it will hurry and catch up... it does this constantly making you wonder if this unit is even stable
=> subtitles appear on new discs even though subtitles turned off (happened only once... I went into Helios menu and turned off- everything good so far...)
=> firmware updates- I've yet to see any... "Hello? Helios? Anyone home?"
=> warranty- what exactly *is* the warranty??? Electronica Direct, where I bought it, has a 15-day return/exchange policy... a lot of good that does when it takes NeoDigits a week to get back to you the first time. I don't know *what* NeoDigits warranty is, but this thing sucked right out of the box.
THE CHOP-CHOP: This unit is a work in progress for Helios. It has HD over component / 1080i over component, but Helios has a ton of bugs to squash. NeoDigits' new lineup looks to put themselves on the map with Oppo as an alternative to Sony, Toshiba, Pioneer, etc., but their stuff has to freakin' *work* first!
I Googled "1080i over component" and "HD over component" for 6 months! Spending $1000 for stupid blu-ray/hd dvd player and then $30 for hd disc? Screw that!
Unfortunately, reliable HD over component isn't available yet. The only reason this unit earns any stars at all is for the hope that Helios will repair/replace my unit or release one grand-daddy mother of a firmware update. Though, I'm quite sure these problems exceed the limits of what a trivial firmware update would fix.
I strongly urge potential buyers to not buy this product and to wait for NeoDigits' newer models to be released. Wait for reviews on these newer models. Customers in this niche are very savvy and eager to share their findings and this will help everyone.
If my unit is repaired or replaced w/ a unit that works, I will definitely come back and re-do my rating because this unit has 5-star potential written ALL OVER it.
