Sony's silver SLV-D360P DVD/VCR combination lets you enjoy your DVDs, VHS videos, and your CD-based digital media files right in the comfort of your living room or bedroom. The deck handles just about any conceivable media format, from VHS and S-VHS tapes (which it renders at standard VHS resolution) to DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW--including CPRM-protected programming (Content Protection for Recordable Media). It will even spin your homemade MP3 CDs and JPEG picture CDs (including Kodak Picture CD).
Whether you already own an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SLV-D360P can deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Other DVD features include instant replay, picture zoom, and parental lock.
The VCR section offers 1-month, 8-event advance programming and commercial skip. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the front panel for hassle-free connections. Its 4-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. State-of-the-art, 19-micron video heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.
Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for some TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use 2 inputs, however, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats.
It's a different deal for audio: you can listen through a single set of stereo analog-audio cables for each component (one is supplied), or--if you want to enjoy DVDs in discrete 5.1-channel surround sound--you can send the DVD's audio to a compatible audio/video receiver and a multichannel speaker system through a digital-audio interconnect (either optical or coaxial, not supplied). The unit also comes with an RF cable that will transmit VHS/DVD audio and video to your TV, a multi-lingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), and an illuminated DVD/VCR remote control that also operates most brands of TV.

Slow, can't read discs playable in a $50 cheap unit.......2007-03-14
I bought this unit to replace one of Sony's first DVD players, old enough to have a DIVX phone jack. I wanted to consolidate the VCR space and get something that would load discs faster; one out of two ain't bad. This thing loads discs slower than a 5-6-year-old Sony DVD player, slower than a 'cheaper' brand competitor, and can't play many discs that other units & computers can. I still love my Bravia LCD, but the next media player that gets plugged into it sure isn't gonna be a Sony.
Very frustrating........2007-03-10
This product seemed to be a very good for us feature wise. But, basic usage of this item can be very frustrating. Here are a few reasons:
1) Loading of CD's and DVD's seems to take forever.
2) Hitting 'next' button had very long lag between starting to go to the next item, and it getting to the next item.
3) The VHS player has tracking issues with many tapes (even new ones out of the box). Making viewing impossible.
4) Hitting eject, and many other buttons, seem to have a huge lag between hitting the button-- and it doing anything. Hit 'eject' or 'play' and it might be a minute before the player acknowledges you hit a button. This is a different issue than item 2 above.
5) The remote in not intuitive. And in the menu, often what the menu items are don't map to the remote buttons.
6) Often rewind of a VHS tape literally goes at the same speed as playing the tape. Meaning that the speed at which it rewinds is normal play rate.
I simply cannot believe this is actually a Sony product.
Throwing it out the window.......2007-02-18
We were sucked in by the brand name and great price but have had problems with this "Sony" from day one. All of the buttons have slow response times. For example, it takes forever to eject a disk. And when you're playing a CD, it takes forever to advance from one track to the next.
The VCR has tracking issues with every tape we own--tapes that work fine on other VCR players. And when you're playing a tape and you press rewind to go back to something you missed, it stops and goes to a blue screen. You can't watch it rewind.
The remote is problematic too--you have to press "Play" to make a selection because the "Enter" button doesn't do anything at all. It's very unintuitive.
We donated our old no-name DVD and VCR when we "upgraded" to this fancy all-in-one, but we would give anything to have them back again. They took up more space, but at least they worked!! I can see by the reviews that some people lucked out and got machines that worked. I wouldn't risk it if I were you.

I bought this for our church, as a companion to a new video projector. It's ok, but the VCR is pretty sad: it has a hard time with some older tapes that play just fine in a $40 no-name VCR. The DVD player does a decent enough job, but it's nothing special.
One really stupid thing, mentioned in another review, is that the VCR and DVD sections don't share the S-Video output, so I have to run two separate connections to the TV. Dumb. Isn't that why you buy a combo deck in the first place? To eliminate extra wires?
Given the chance to do it over, I would buy separate components.

I have had this combo unit for over 1 year and have bought 3 more very similar for family members and other rooms in my house. It's esy to use and program and is reliable.

I really wish I'd read the user reviews of this product before purchasing, because nowhere in the the product description is it mentioned that there's no tuner. This means that it will only record what the TV or cable box is tuned to. Not good. I had to return the item shortly after hooking it up.
Great VCR/DVD player.......2007-11-08
I'm very happy with this player. We use it all day long. I bought it for my 3 year old daughter's room. Her tv is not hooked up to cable. We just use it for her to watch her videos and DVDs. She can watch Sesame Street tapes all day and we keep them playing. This machine is up to the task. Obviously, we haven't recorded on it, but the picture plays very clearly and the sound is great. Remote is easy to use as well. Wonderful seller. Fast shipping. Would recommend.

When deciding to purchase a dvd/vcr combo the only things that concern me is the picture quality,ease of operation and the price. This inexpensive easy to use unit has an excellent dvd and vcr picture playback quality that is probably second to none. Remember-This is a dvd player and not a dvd recorder. Also keep in mind that this unit does not have a built in tuner. This means that in order for the unit to function you will need a separate tuner(such as a cable box or satellite box) THAT HAS audio/video jack outputs along with a television THAT HAS audio/video jack inputs. I am sure that the unit being tunerless is what makes for a better picture.
