Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SLV-D350P can deliver the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Other DVD functions include bookmarking, picture zoom, parental lock, and a screen saver.

The VCR section offers one-month, eight-event advance programming to commercial skip. Your camcorder or gaming console plugs right into the front panel for hassle-free connections. Its four-head design ensures smooth slow-motion play (forward and reverse) and clear still-frame images, and with hi-fi sound the unit records and plays back stereo audio tracks. Its 19-micron heads deliver the clearest possible picture when recording or viewing in EP (extended-play) mode.

Commercial skip makes it easier than ever to zip past commercials and unwanted "coming attractions," jumping forward 30 seconds for every press of the commercial-skip button.

Connections with combo units are often inconvenient, forcing you to use separate video hookups for each section (DVD, VCR), a problem for older TVs. This player has it figured out: a single RF or composite-video connection to a television will display either the DVD or the VCR signal, depending on which format you're viewing. If you want to view DVDs in S-video or in component-video (either interlaced or progressive-scan), you will need to use two inputs, as the device will not upconvert the signal from the VCR to either of those higher-resolution formats. Not to worry, though: any component- or S-video-equipped TV will offer sufficient inputs for both of the SLV-D350P's formats.

It's a different arrangement for audio: you can listen through a single set of stereo analog-audio cables for each component (one is supplied), or--if you want to enjoy DVDs in discrete 5.1-channel surround sound--you can send the DVD's audio to a compatible audio/video receiver and a multichannel speaker system through a digital-audio interconnect (either optical or coaxial, not supplied). The unit also comes with an RF cable that will transmit DVD/VHS audio and video to your TV, a multilingual onscreen display (English, Spanish, French), and a multibrand TV/DVD/VCR remote control.

Quit working after two years........2007-09-26

For nearly two years, this product served us well. Actually, we didn't use it all that much -- on average we would watch a DVD every 2-3 weeks. A few months ago, it would occasionally fail to recognize a DVD, or would otherwise freeze. I used a DVD cleaner, which I think "maybe" helped one evening, as we were able to get through a movie with just one instance of freezing. Not worth the frustration anymore, so tonight I am online shopping for a new device. I won't buy this model again. P.S., When it worked, it worked quite well -- good picture, easy remote, conveniently placed output ports. Not a bad product if you get a good price, but I think I could have done better.

I have seen so many negative reviews for this item, but I have to say that we have owned this unit for almost 4 years now and it still works very nicely, both DVD and VCR. We purchased our unit at the Sony Outlet just south of Boston,MA. My two-year old daughter watches her favorite videos and DVD's repetitively throughout the day (sometimes to the point where I am ready to throw them all out the window..haha)and we haven't had any problems whatsoever.

My DVD side just bit the dust after about 3 years of service. Far less than I had expected from SONY.

Don't Buy It.......2007-03-12

Had very short time - DVD just quit loading DVD's, getting an error message - tried compressed air and disk cleaner (they cost me $30) - called Sony - since out of warranty, they wanted $133 (includes shipping) to send me a refur unit - forget it. No more Sony for me.

Poor Quality for Sony.......2007-03-01

I have this unit for 2 years and it has been barely adequate but not great like most Sony products. First, the buttons on the remote are still confusing to use after all of this time. Second the DVD will freeze up/skip on disks with a lot of compression or sound effects. Third, the remote doesn't work across the room unless you hold your mouth and wrist just right. Fourth, it has to think a few seconds about what to do when you push a remote button which makes you wonder if you were holding your mouth right. Finally, the last few months it has been going completely wacko on me by occasionally changing the time to some time in 2097, it loses or changes some of the recording times, and sometimes just forgets to come on at at its programmed time. I have always shopped Sony first but now I am starting to look elsewhere. It is time for a change. I would only recommend this to someone that I wanted to suffer at the hands of inferior engineering.

I really wish I'd read the user reviews of this product before purchasing, because nowhere in the the product description is it mentioned that there's no tuner. This means that it will only record what the TV or cable box is tuned to. Not good. I had to return the item shortly after hooking it up.

Great VCR/DVD player.......2007-11-08

I'm very happy with this player. We use it all day long. I bought it for my 3 year old daughter's room. Her tv is not hooked up to cable. We just use it for her to watch her videos and DVDs. She can watch Sesame Street tapes all day and we keep them playing. This machine is up to the task. Obviously, we haven't recorded on it, but the picture plays very clearly and the sound is great. Remote is easy to use as well. Wonderful seller. Fast shipping. Would recommend.

Sony SLV-D281P - AN EXCELLENT UNIT.......2007-10-17

When deciding to purchase a dvd/vcr combo the only things that concern me is the picture quality,ease of operation and the price. This inexpensive easy to use unit has an excellent dvd and vcr picture playback quality that is probably second to none. Remember-This is a dvd player and not a dvd recorder. Also keep in mind that this unit does not have a built in tuner. This means that in order for the unit to function you will need a separate tuner(such as a cable box or satellite box) THAT HAS audio/video jack outputs along with a television THAT HAS audio/video jack inputs. I am sure that the unit being tunerless is what makes for a better picture.
